Scam in Pattaya , a farang in his late 40's approached me outside Central on 2nd road a few years ago. This European man ( who claimed he was from Sweden ) said all his money and passport was stolen and he needed money urgently ( think he wanted 500 Baht at the time ) to get to the Swedish embassy in Bangkok . I refused to help but felt bad about it .but it proved to be a good decision down the line a year later I was approached again in a different part of Pattaya ( North Pattaya road ) by the exact same man with the same sob story . Luckily my memory was better than his . I am beginning to think I look gullible lol also.

danvelgtr - Same thing happened to me in my home town in southern Spain!
An English-speaking guy wanted funds (10 euros I think) for some story he told about his car. It sounded fairly plausible but I didn't fall for it. I thought...why did he single me out?
Like you, I think I might also look gullible.... I am a tall pale English guy amongst swarthy locals!
Anyway, sure enough, more than a year later, the same man approached me in a different part of town. As soon as he started to speak to me, I just kept walking.

The same thing happened to me about 8 weeks ago at Central Festival Phuket. He waited until I got on the escalator then stood behind me and gave me the same story including showing me the urine bag under his shirt. I didn't feel right about it so I reported him to mall security. They went to look for him but by then he had left. Great channel guys! Thanks.

Yes, I was approached with this exact scam several months back, here in Chiang Mai. Everything he did mirrored what you described. I couldn’t make out the face in the pictures you displayed, but pretty sure my scammer was a different guy. So must be a team effort. Same coffee colored discharge in his bag as well. Not sure, but it seems a collection bag would want to be lower than the source, so gravity could do its job, so questioned the chest mounted bag. Thanks for spreading the word now that tourists are returning to Thailand, so they can avoid this scam.

Oh man, I got another version of this scam in Abu Dhabi. An Indian guy said he was trying to get money to go home because he had been attacked. He lifts up his shirt to reveal a horrible looking knife wound about 5 inches long.
I told him he should go to the hospital immediately and they can sort him out from there, but he tried to convince me more and started the crying bit.
I told him good luck and walked away.
I have to say, that wound looked absolutely horrible and I still wonder if it was self-inflicted to scam people.

A few years ago, a guy in a turban would approach people and tell them they were very lucky and that he could tell them their fortune so they would know when much money (love, etc) would be entering their life for only 1,000 baht. I use to work near Pattaya so rented a condo in north Pattaya. Taking the bus from Ekamai from BKK was a “weekend” ritual a couple times a month. The buses use to leave every 20-30 minutes “pre-Covid” days. When purchasing your bus ticket from counter #1, the clerk at the window has a screen where you can choose your seat if you get there early before the bus is full. The screen shows what seats are available. I noticed many times the clerk would try to give me a rear seat next to the toilet which can smell or the door swings open while the bus hits those bumps. -So always look at the clerk’s screen to see what seats are available. True, if you get there late, you don’t have a choice. -And sometimes there are touts standing in front of the Ekamai bus entrance asking, “Mister, where you’re going?” Ignore them since they’re trying to get you to hop on a van which stops along the way to Pattaya.
Unfortunately during the 14 years I lived there, the public baht bus “taxi” ( songthaew) leaving the Pattaya bus station to drop you off near or at your hotel would cram everyone like sardines and rip people off by charging 20-30 baht more making up some excuse why there was an increase. ( They had a monopoly- what can you do?) Sometimes you’d have to wait 20 minutes before the tuk-tuk/ “baht bus” was full. It was definitely the worse part about arriving in Pattaya and taking transportation from the north Pattaya bus station to your destination but that was in the “olden days” when tourism was in its peak. Unlike Phuket’s tuk tuk rude mafia in that city, taking the regular “baht bus” ( songthaew) in Pattaya is a breeze once you figure out the major routes)
Some tourists do not know taking the public songthaew from Jomtien beach to north or central Pattaya is 20 baht- not 10 baht.
Beautiful sunsets at Pattaya Bay and try out a drink on the Hilton roof top bar.Be sure to explore Koh Larn and… don’t be walking along the Beach Rd promenade after midnight.-lol

Hey Greeny, good advice for people it’s been my method of travel for a long, long time. If someone approaches me they never get a dime. If I approach them, I may give whatever a dollar or two or more if I see something legit, it’s my choice who I give money to not some street urgent that’s going to walk up on me And ask me for money same goes for phone calls or Internet contacts if I contact someone on the phone or Internet, I can open up my wallet and grab a credit card but otherwise no one gets anything from me if they’re soliciting. A local guy approached me, couldn't even speak two words of English and I did an about face and went about my merry way. No one else approached me, just this guy whom I could tell wanted something and I just had that "feeling". 2) The other time was a European backpacker in the Airport as I was leaving trying that backpacker game of not having enough money to get back home. One of the oldest scams in Thailand are based on taking advantage of people with good hearts. The scammers prey on people that have good intentions and wanting to help people down on their luck or in need. I've seen many scammers use props or even use children pan handling with disabilities. Many of these scammers are drug dealers or pan handling pimps. The best thing to do when a random stranger approaches you is to simply ignore them and go about your business.

I ran into two Indian guys doing the same scam. I fell for it the first time because what he had under his shirt, looked real. I knew it was a scam when, 90 minutes later, another Indian guy came up to me in the same mall on Phuket and asked for the money for medicine. There were two of them because they had the same piece of paper and were dressed the same color pants and shirt. I told the guy I was going to call the police and he left quickly. Then--I could not believe it--about one week later, I went to a hospital on Phuket for an xray on my knee. One of the same guys was there in the emergency room lobby trying to get someone to give him money. He had the same paper and was dressed the same way but this time, he had a plastic medical bag with some blood in it and a tube running out of his abdoman so it looked legit. I think they know how to do this so it looks real, that is how they are so convincing. I warned the guy at the hospital and told him to make the guy show his passport. The grifter left. I am sure they have made a lot because this looks very real and what foreigner wouldn't give someone $30 for medicine that might save their lives or prevent them from getting an infection?

I never encountered a hotel asking I transact in USD. On my recent 3 day stopover in Dubai returning home, it was common, even in restaurants to run my cc or debit in USD. I haven't encountered that option in Thailand. I'm sure in due course it'll be the norm. I used my Schawb debt it card for all withdrawals in Thailand and I'll be reimbursed the fees. ....... As far as scams, on 15 May I was with a thai girl and we went to visit Grand Palace. I wanted o revisit without hordes of Chinese. Touts where telling us GP was closed and I told my companion it's a bs scam. It ended up being true as there was a royal event and some Buddha event that day. My common sense radar was on alert and the GP was actually really closed. we crossed the river to Arun and I crawled under Rama II's bed instead. Ended uo being a great day. ..... Tigers are 8 games behind. Stick a fork on that. 😀
