I was one of cutters with the first of many logging crews in. The silt was the toughest thing I’ve ever walked through. Your constantly walking across logs. One wrong step you could fall into 15+ft holes. Closure was our goal for every family. Watching everyone work together was one of the most beautiful things I’ve witnessed. People from everywhere, one goal. No matter the hours. Oso Strong

AMEN! Lay Crisis Counselor/First Responder/Red Cross volunteer! The boy plucked out of the mud!😭 Had a profound situation throughout where circumstances warranted that I had that lil boy by the ankle, his dear heart broken Momma who lost all the rest of their family that day, a flight of stairs above us, screaming in shock ( understandable) as my hand darted out & caught that lil sweet boy in the air before his head cracked extremely hard on cement stairs! The force he was flying it is highly probable his skull wouldn't have survived impact! Numerous times in life GOD equipped me with lightening quick response to catch a baby about to go flying down stairs, but this was that x10 that! We were all in shock for awhile after! I had immediately flipped him & rushed him to his Momma! As a Mom & grandma I still feel like puking deal with a bit of shock symptoms when I recall those many exhausting weeks with little to no sleep. Just the driving need to keep moving to help! Mourning with the family's & our community will never leave me! And our area, county, state will never forget! OSO STRONG 💪❤️ The slide just missed my daughter's best friends home, where she was much of the time! Had you guys come in to the shelter for coffee, food, water, first aid or just a few seconds escape & catch your breath! ( the Momma in me wanted to wrap/hug you all up & heal you up before you set back out)Some needed to be left alone to process, some to find a light hearted touch of laughter to ease the extreme ache, some to just have someone to cry with, some to see that the world was still normal before going back into the trenches! Our community came together to live on & sacrifice all as you guys did all to save any shred of life you could! My heart ( as a girl who grew up with loggers, etc in the high mountains of our state, I know how dangerous & qualified a job it really is!) All you who immediately, "against all odds, & opposition" rushed in to do all with your last shred of strength & breath! YOU SAVED LIVES, & almost more importantly YOU GAVE HOPE! You guys are the ones when others gave up hope, that said not till the job is done! 💪❤️👌You have our undying love, respect & appreciation! WE WILL NOT FORGET! United we stand! 🇺🇸❤️Evil flourishes if good men do nothing, you men folk proved that united we can move mountains! ❤ May GOD BLESS & keep you & yours!

Seems like yesterday. Had just joined the Darrington FD six months before and was in the first ambulance on the east side with Jan and knew nearly everyone we lost. Ironically I was studying the national incident management protocols when we were toned out and all of a sudden I was living it for weeks on end. Amazing, tragic days

One of my friends, a logger, helped with the rescue effort. He said it was one of the hardest things he’s ever done. He’s passed on now, but I always think of him when I drive through Oso. I think of him and everyone who died or lost their loved ones. I pray they’re all at peace in some way.

My Military unit was called to this to help dig for belongings and find people and heard of a brother looking for his sister but never met him and I remember we found the blue car. The only thing we wanted was to find everyone before getting replaced by another Unit.

The locals at the time called the hill “slide hill” because of all the previous slides in the past. So why live there to begin with? Playing Russian roulette isn’t smart.
