I have been talking about this for 30 years, with much eye-rolling from my fellow Washingtonians. I am so glad it is finally being legitimized. Although sadly, many people are still eye-rolling.
I was in Vancouver Canada years ago when there was a shake... really quite frightening although there was no damage to speak of ; but the feeling of something completely out of your control leaves a lasting impression.
People might roll their eyes for another three hundred years but the longer the time between the quakes the stronger they predict it will be. As a subduction zone that activates every three hundred years this can never be good news but it is a wait and watch situation.
@@BobbyConner-yn8nn well, everyone’s always saying that the government is broke. We’ve already made a lot of infrastructure deteriorate over the years.
My husband and I live in Florida, but he moved here from Seattle 6 years ago. As I was watching this I was reminded of our hurricane season shows that prepare us to be ready, just in case. This is a great program.
I was born in Tacoma, Washington and found this presentation to have been made so well, that it’s apropos for virtually anywhere. Survival depends upon how well you are prepared. Don’t expect others to do it for you.
You see that over and over, the difference between prepared and determined and those expecting the government to do everything for them. And, if big daddy government gives prep ideas and warnings, and says to evacuate or wear a mask, they blow it off and after, sue big daddy, right? The mask thing is just bewildering! Something so simple and helpful! I have worn one during dust storms and weeks and weeks of smoke from fires...even vacuuming in the old days before good filters. People in other countries have worn them in severe smog or disease outbreaks...It just makes good sense. This is a real change in common sense and values. It is really fear driven by manipulators. We must use caution during disasters not to get caught up in crazy rumors and other fear-driven paranoia

I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for 34 years and experienced several earthquakes, including the quake of '89. In a storage unit next to my house, I kept canned food, water, extra clothes, a tent, and assorted camping equipment. I didn't know anyone else who prepared for the inevitable. I think their plan was to rely on the government. If hundreds of thousands are in need of immediate assistance, what are the chances you'll be number one on the list? When people are hungry and thirsty, they will take what they need by force. Get ready, and keep your mouth shut.

As a Texan I can tell you people pride themselves on preparing for survivalist situations, the more apocalyptical, the better. Most of the people I know can field dress a deer, grow a garden, sew their own clothes, and prepare beans 25 different ways. These are the people whose descendants will populate the earth post Armageddon. I have my reservations about the folks in Western Oregon and Washington feeding themselves without a Starbucks and Whole Foods.
Having worked and lived in the Portland area, I have my doubts that the majority of people living in this area would fair very well. As soon as the grid goes down, most would freak out. Without cell phones and city services life would be extremely difficult for them. Most of the houses held up by stilts on the hillsides, on loose wet soil, would collapse. Honestly, the people most likely to survive would be the homeless. In my opinion.
Just moved from Portland Oregon, after living there for 4 yrs. For this & other reasons, I agree , the homeless are more likely to make it .Get away from the oceans, asap.
I left Portland when I learned all the fuel tanks on the Columbia will collapse because they are built on silt, and all the bridges connecting the two halves of Portland will go down, leaving those on the east side of the Willamette stranded without resources.
The homeless are less likely to be killed immediately, but they haven't a way to survive the aftermath unless they come for what you have, which they will. Be prepared.

I am in Mayaguez Puerto Rico and to this day we are STILL experiencing several aftershocks from the series of earthquakes in Puerto Rico. When I drive through Yauco heading towards Ponce on Highway number 52 I can see the landslides. It's extremely scary to watch rock, dirt and boulders coming down the mountains. 🇵🇷
I was way up a ladder during the 2001Snoqualmie quake. I was building my first house.(first and only..my forever house) Not knowing at first it actually was an earthquake...I thought I was building it wrong!!!...when my house started shaking and moving. One of those 'I know exactly where I was' moments. 1/20/2020.
At the time of the 2001 earthquake I was sitting in our real estate office in Kirkland. When it hit the guys in the computer room and I got out fast. I've never forgotten standing in the parking lot with the asphalt rolling in waves so that it was hard to stay up. That was a 6.8 and I have no interest in experiencing a larger one especially the monster predicted.
I was in a dental office in Lacey with my two kids. I have been in many earthquakes over the years so I usually wait before I get "excited". After 20 seconds and panels falling down from the roof I got out of there. There were quite a few anxious parents in the parking lot worried about their children..no cell phones were working. I did my best to assure them that their kids were ok and that this was really not a very serious quake. Our cell phones came back on fairly quickly so everyone left. I understood their concerns. Quakes are scarey especially if you have never experienced one in the 6 range.
I was in Lakewood. I thought it was pretty cool. But then I was young... Lol. Now I'm more worried about electricity in winter... I hate being cold. Lol.
i live in New Zealand. Just like the west coast of Canada we too live on an active fault line at the edge of two plates. in recent times NZ has experienced damaging earthquake events. So when I watched this video I found it relevant, informative and educational specifically the survival platforms . Your region and geographic history is very, very similar. We too are expecting an overdue big event. Great video!
With the survival capsules, you’d have to remember your phone or have some kind of locator beacon or you could be lost at sea or buried under debris for hours. Scary if you’re claustrophobic. We don’t get much here in Australia

So much worse than hurricanes. Water lines, roads ... hurricanes don’t usually affect those. It may prove difficult to get rescue, relief into the area.
This was a REALLY well done doc! I've lived 5 miles from the San Andres Fault in southern California for over 30 years. I'm prepared for the big one both in my car and home. However, I learned about so many aspects of earthquakes that would affect me that I never thought of. Great public service video!
@@kevincleveland763 What a ridiculous and foolish comment. No one knows when or how strong the next quake will be. No one. So I always have emergency supplies.
Thanks for the comment. It's true that we cannot predict precisely the specific strength of an earthquake. However, we know from observation of the geological fault line and from past history that this earthquake 9+. We also know that it has a regular cycle on which it occurs and is 73 years late. So, my assertion is reasonable. It will be soon, and it will be bad. And if I'm wrong and people prepare anyhow, I won't feel bad about it. However if it happens tomorrow and people are well prepared and survive that make me delighted.
You're right, in that the earth has provided millennia of evidence of activity about the coming and going of quakes, their patterns, their intensity, their locations. Studying all of this would give one an educated opinion.

I was in Anchorage AK in 2004 visiting my parents when the Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami occurred!!! Luckily the Tsunami alert was canceled but felt Earthquakes albeit smaller the same day! I love the coastal Pacific Northwest, although I'm a Florida resident, I've spent some of the most enjoyable weeks of my life in your neck of the woods, after decades of distant study. And, I've survived a direct hit from a Cat 5 hurricane, one of the 4-strongest to hit the US mainland in the past 170 years, Michael. Earthquakes and volcanoes, things we don't have here, seem so MUCH more terrifying. Mainly because with a hurricane, a 24-hours warning is expected as a minimum. For these geologic disasters, the warning would be measured in minutes at best. Still, I wish I could relocate there. I'm 68, and I figure the odds are this megaquake and its tsunami will be after I'm gone. If it were to kill me, at least I would've enjoyed my final years in a far better place. 32:39 Kinda optimistic that cell phones will be working. 34:19 Less than a gallon per day per person of potable water is necessary. Potable is what you need for hydration and food preparation. If you've got a source of non-potable, such as a swimming pool, that works just fine for things like flushing toilets and cleaning. 34:39 In our two week power outage, it was very helpful to have a power inverter for the car. Periodically running the car's engine to keep the battery charged, it permitted recharging battery cells, and powering radio. We also took solar powered eave lighting indoors to provide lighting at night, and only experienced darkness when desired. My biggest regret in the aftermath of Michael was that I didn't possess a camp stove, and bought one shortly afterward for any future crisis. Hot coffee and hot meals are worth the entry fee. Assuming you survive the disaster, you've got to think about being in a camping situation for weeks.
I wouldn’t live there either. Especially in a city! Cities have a three day food supply and it will eventually turn into chaos. Looting and other terrible things without protection.

Hey! I am a retired Refrigerator Tech. You possibly made a mistake. If the compressor was running and you dis-conrected the power cord and immediately reconnected power, the compressor did not have a chance to cycle down and it would most likely cause it to overload and cut out the relay. If you cut power you should let about 5 minutes pass before reconnecting it.

@Mary Hoeft While it's not likely to produce a large Tsunami, if a "Big One" happens along the San Andreas fault, the devastation would be similar for Central and Southern California and potentially parts of Northern Mexico. A Cascadia event is likely to trigger volcanic activity as well. And California has its Long Valley Caldera and volcanic activity in the Southern area around the Salton Sea.
Its wise to not let ANYONE know, your name, see your face and see your survival/prepping supplies. Because if/when something goes down. some people may come looking for YOU and YOUR SUPPLIES
Not an ideal solution for the claustrophobic, that's for fucking sure. I'd rather take my chances running for it than be buried alive in a tiny round steel coffin.
Japan is on the ocean. Seattle is inland and between it and the Cascadia faultline is a 7,000+' tall mountain range. The last time a big quake hit the area it did not send a tsunami anywhere near what is near Seattle. It did wipe out the Washington coastline and send a tsunami cross the Pacific to Japan.
@@shamanbeartwo3819 During the Great Eastern Japan quake,Tsunami sent waves up rivers into the mountains of japan 700 feet above sea level and 7 miles inland....Seattle sits in a bay which is directly linked to the Pacific,if a tsunami happens from a 9.0 or greater then the amount of water that flows into the bay from the pacific will decide how high the water gets in the bay...remember the bay is already full of water with nowhere to go but up.....also you forget the subsidence will also occur there as it did in japan, somplaces saw over a 2 meter drop as the land subsided...which means a greater potential for flooding. The mountain range will have zero effect on how the tsunami flows,it will always take the path of least resistance.
@@morgangrey4020 - Seattle does not sit in a bay, San Francisco does. Seattle is in a very large sound of water which is 10 miles wide. The entrance to the sound to Seattle is quite a distance. From the ocean to the entrance of the Puget Sound is 100 miles through the Straight of Juan de Fuca. To downtown Seattle after that brings it up to 139 miles. Again, no historical/archeological evidence of tsunami damage to Seattle with the last huge Cascadia quake. Nothing in the oral tradition of the native tribes here. The damage was to the coast. Google "Seattle tsunami" and you will find that the last evidence of a tsunami in Seattle was around 900 A.D. with 16' waves from the Seattle fault.
That Capsule is a great idea save 2 points: What do you do when you are dragged out to sea? What do you if it becomes entangled in debris and wind up covered by several feet of mud, etc. BOTH of those scenarios end with death. But hey, at least you didn't drown.
Conchita Casiano I was in San Jose just a couple of miles north of the epicenter. I will never forget it. We were lucky, no injuries only very minor property damage. But 2 miles west of us old homes were knocked off their foundations and chimneys were gone. 2 Miles to east new apartments lost all their balconies. We need to upgrade our standards and retrofit. And prepare to survive as most of us will survive the quake.
Retrofitting existing buildings in a crowded metro area isn't possible. People want affordable housing - the cost has to come out somewhere, and cheap materials is where it happens
I was working in Moss Landing, right next to the PG&E power plant, about 15 miles from the epicenter. I watched those 500' tall stacks move and sway back and forth. I would have never believed they could move so much, yet return to plumb. Later, serious cracks were found and workmen had to wrap them with stainless steel straps to hold them together. They are no longer used and 20 years ago the decision was made to have them taken down, but huge job and they still remain standing.

So, the “Tsunami Ball” survived a flood, a drop, and a fall from a high waterfall. But would the person survive inside? If you’re submerged, is it watertight? Is there oxygen inside. If you’re submerged inside, is there a way to signal for help? I ask because it might be better to drown quickly than face 36 hours covered in mud waiting to die and gasping for air.

I remember when I was in 5th grade I had a feeling that there was going to be an earthquake, my friend noticed that there was a big Crack in our classroom. I noticed it to also I noticed the crack on the ground near the classroom, the crack was running underneath our classroom that's what had me feeling that there was going to be an earthquake and our classroom was going to split in half. Well the earthquake happened 2-3 days later and our classroom was damaged by the earthquake, one student was injured in the quake. My friend and I told the janitor, teacher that there was going to be an earthquake and our classroom was going to split in half also someone was going to get hurt. But they didn't listen so I was so persistent about it that I even got put on detention, the next day I kept telling the teacher to move the desks back or forward, she still didn't listen. I had forged my mom's signature so that way I could get the principal to listen to me, he told me why didn't you just come and talk to me I told him I did but he was busy. Well I wasn't there at school when the earthquake happened and just like I told them the classroom did split in half and kids got hurt. My friend listened to me and he moved his desk which it saved him from falling into the ground. The teacher told me when I came back to school on Monday, because they ended up getting a new classroom (portable) and she apologized to me. I was at my grandmas house when it happened because I had a dentist appointment that day, I ended up seeing my school on the news. I was never mentioned about it that I tried to prevent someone to get injured, but they didn't care that I was doing what my angels were warning me so that I can warn other people. I learned by paying attention to my dog and the weather, so when I put how the weather patterns are happening on a day to day basis plus how the noises my dog made that's when I knew it's going to be an earthquake. Pay attention to animals also the weather you will know approximately when it's coming. I have predicted a lot of earthquakes were going to happen but people don't like to listen to me.

To watch the concrete Sidewalks ripple like water and the roadways undulate with the waves was truly unforgettable, then i am doing a contract job in WA state and the Nesqualli quake hits sounds like a heavily loaded freight truck roars past and the poured concrete floor if the warehouse just rippled like the surface of a pond after tossing in a heavy rock --Good times
I was in West Seattle with my daughter and grandson when that earthquake hit. In the first moments, we thought an 18-wheeler was driving down our tiny, residential street, but we quickly realized it was an earthquake, and hurried to the doorway, where we rode it out. Almost 20 years, now, and I’m ready for the next one. As ready as anyone can be, that is.
I was in that quake in Lacey. I have also been in many while living in Alaska including the 9.2 quake in 1964. There is nothing to prepare you for the violence of a quake that intense and having it last for 5 minutes. I can still feel the whole thing.
Actually I am in N.E. Ohio. We get small EQs about 35 mi from me underneath Lake Erie near a huge salt-mine and real close to the Perry Nuclear Power plan. I was on Okinawa for 2 years and felt 5s fairly often. I love Earth Sciences.
I don't know why this popped up under videos RUclips suggests I watch. But we are nearly a week after a 5.7 magnitude quake that occurred at 7:09 am in Salt lake city, UT on March 18, 2020. And let me tell you, it definitely rocked my world and opened my eyes to my preparedness ... Or lack there of. Good thing I happen to keep shoes under my bed and a flashlight next to my bed, because of my paranoid fear of a quake happening during the night. It all came in handy after our quake, because the power went out almost immediately, leaving us stunned and in the dark after the. It wouldn't get light enough to see anything for another 20 to 30 minutes. That was my first earthquake experience ever, and the most terrifying thing I have ever experienced. And now have PTSD, cant sleep or relax and anxious about another quake. Since the initial earthquake, we have had far more than 300 aftershocks that have been significant enough to rumble our entire house and splash the water out of our fish tanks....its been horrible!!! 😖😭👎 please stop shaking. Scary to hear that, that wasn't even the big one. 😱
The idea of having ideal , adequate and manageable mix of located refuges sounds like a good one ! That would enable rescue efforts to go first to the least satisfactory refuges.and thereby potentially saving many more lives ! Same goes for structures. Buildings pre rated on level of capacity to withstand earthquake would assist in prioritising rescue ! Being prepared can help against panic surely ! Drills could help create solidarity and fight panic in the event of catastrophe. The pillowcase project sounds great. Kids having one under the bed . Like a treasure trove exercising the imagination in ways that prepare. As a design teacher and psychotherapist , I would say that a combination of practical and imagination stimulating communication within homes, schools and other communities, always including some light hearted elements to ensure that over-activated anxiety is not stimulated ! People need to know for instance, that being very fortunate can sometimes create exaggerated fear of loss ! That hidden or unappreciated capacities can emerge as vital in emergencies. That an emergency need not necessarily be a disaster ! Growth as a human being can be an outcome too !

I think I was 5 and I remember vividly sitting on the lazy Susan spinning arpund while my great grandma had her coffee and the next thing I know we were being thrown around, ran to the basement and when it was safe, there were tree branches a foot wide at times just sticking straight up in the ground but no major damages that I can remember and we lived in the thurston county area. What a day that was.

Tom Jones There is a need for good and real men everywhere. If this earthquake happens the way they say it will then it will take both strong women and men working together to survive.
Jamie Miranda, you cannot prepare for this to Survive the consequences of the opening of the 6th Seal Earthsquake. YOU need to prepare for the Day of the Rapture, when the Lord Jesus Christ is coming for HIS Bride. Water and everything else is coming in until the 110° LL. And what the East Coast line concerned, you have to stay behind the 90° LL.
A long time ago, like 1990s . A geologist, I'm sorry but I can't remember his name. But he said the soil in California is like that of a chocolate chip cookie. IT will crumble into the sea. Anyone living west of the San Andreas fault is in danger. That includes most of my family and friends. They will not listen to me. But it's because their jobs are down there. But most of my sisters want to move but not their husbands.
Pink Lady , the Situation for USA is exactly very complicated. 1st) I Need to know your up to Date Location. Why? Because Judgement is starting long before the opening of the 6th Seal. Judgement will start with the beginning of inner transfiguration of the selected Bride of Christ Jesus. That beginning is a Marker for Judgement of the World, which I believe will start in the Eastcoast Side of the America continents. If you live in the Eastcoast of North American continent, you better leave Newfoundland, everything east of North- and South Carolina mountain Range ( Think of what John Denver is singing about), you better leave NY state and City. Furthermore leave Puerto Rico , the Caribbean Islands, Florida state, Miami City. The mid West of USA is for the Time being a more Safe Zone! Between 90° and 110° LL. But the mid - West of USA is being treatened for thermo - Nuclear Destruction. The only real safe Protection = become a Christian. Have a Relation with the Lord Jesus Christ, without being connected to any "christian" Church Organisation. The Lord Jesus Christ hates Religion, but He Loves to See Faith in the Heart of mankind. If you have more questions, Contact me, I stand ready for everyone!
Pink Lady , the situation for everyone is a Personal dicission! If you want to go, and your husband , Friend or whatever, not ? Go, yourself. About Judgment: the plates in the North and South Pacific will Break and shift, bringing Tsunami 's Inland, far deeper than the San Andreas fault lines. And the Intensity of an 6th Seal Earth Quake is not a 9.0 on RS, more 2 - 3 x the 12.0 RS. 2500 square Miles will shift West: from Anchorage, Shifting SE, Vancouver, SE Into Pacific, Seattle West Into Pacific, Salt Lake City , West and Sinking Into the Dessert sand, Phoenix and Las Vegas shift in the direction of Colorado river, which I believe is a Situation like the Andreas fault line opening up. Everything shifts West. All Major Cities ( 45) will eventually be destroyed.
I was working as a dispatcher when the Northridge earthquake happened. I was on the second floor of the building. It shook so bad that it collapsed the 10 freeway less than 100 yards from the building I was in. It scared the hell out of me. When it stopped I was trying to get out when it started shaking again. If you've never been in an earthquake before, trust me, it was very scary.
I see hamster in a plastic ball going down a staircase when I see that thing . Getting dragged out to sea or being buried under debris or not being able to get out with very little oxygen doesn't exactly appeal to me .
Damn. Your city suffered terribly from an earthquake, firestorm and tsunami two-and-a-half centuries ago, as I am sure you're aware. Such a beautiful city.
That's funny but to be honest those pods are the last thing I'd want to be in..I don't think they realise the sheer power of a Tsunami and all the debris that comes with it. Imagine paying big bucks for a pod only to be trapped under tons of debris and no one knows your underfoot...Scary to be trapped inside that with no way out..In short I'd prefer to take my chances outside like the peasant that I am.
Wouldn’t be a bad idea to have Military MRE heater packs. They are water activated meal heaters. They are flame less. In the event of a major disaster, fire or combustion style heating maybe a bad idea. Natural gas lines maybe jeopardize and flames could create more hazards. The heaters are flat and use very little water to activate.
I live in Southern California where our most immediate threat is the San Andreas Fault. We too are "overdue" for a "big one" event though it is not anticipated to yield a deadly tsunami. I currently have about a 45 day supply of food and water, but I am always trying to add to it. I am now considering supplementing my reserve supply with "toilet paper" since the Covid-19 "panic" stripped all our local stores of toilet paper at the onset of the quarantine!

In a storage unit next to my house, I kept canned food, water, extra clothes, a tent, and assorted camping equipment. I didn't know anyone else who prepared for the inevitable.
That’s bc liberals are taught to depend on the government instead of knowing how to take care of themselves
Homeless and wealthy, apparently. The evacuation capsules discussed in the video will only be purchased by the well-heeled.

Earthquakes and volcanoes, things we don't have here, seem so MUCH more terrifying. Mainly because with a hurricane, a 24-hours warning is expected as a minimum. For these geologic disasters, the warning would be measured in minutes at best. Still, I wish I could relocate there.

I honestly don't think those shelters are high enough. In japan and in the indian ocean tsunami, water levels were as high as 40-60 meters

During the strong 1989 earthquake in California, I was in San Francisco. It was like being in a washing machine. Scary. 😰
And prepare to survive as most of us will survive the quake.
i remember the ground looked like liquid

That was exactly what I ve also wondered. Oxygen and water thightness. Think it s easy to open but maybe they have to use technology used by nasa for cleaning the air inside.
@@wilcofaber9863 - I was just thinking with my luck they would find me floating in the sea 3 months later or something. Yeah me, I survived a Tsunami and died in my survival bubble. 🤣
@@Erin-Thor yeah. Or your ending in japan in this thing like the other way around of march 11 2011. I think leaking will not be the risk. Oxygen will be more a risk but opening the hatch can solve it maybe. The risk of floating in the middle of the ocean is bigger, and the ocean is vast.
@@wilcofaber9863 Yes, I have crossed it by sailboat, vast is an understatement. Kind of my point, on the ocean, alone, in a bubble... Air I can get, food and water, a little harder. If I’m covered in debris on land, I’m stuck until someone decides to look for me.

Where did this happen?
You are correct about watching animals and weather patterns, those who do not listen to you learn the hard way, no one on earth can save everyone, keep saving those who will listen. Thank you for your most interesting and timely comment. God speed on your good work🕊

My concern with those survival capsules is that if they are air-tight, there will only be a limited amount of air in there for someone to breathe before they suffocate. You may need to be able to survive in one of those for up to an hour.
They may be drifting in the Pacific or buried under 30 feet of debris. Needs a life raft inside it and oxygen, water, and food with a GPS locator beacon.

That an emergency need not necessarily be a disaster ! Growth as a human being can be an outcome too !

I live in calufoenia near the San Andrea's fault. This video was so informative. Thank you so much.
Viscous Dampers.
You live where? Is that in the U.S.? And it's SAN ANDREAS. It's not a possessive. Living in "calufoenia," you should know better.
@@prometheusunbound7628 good evening that's California. That was the ffc ( fat finger curse) wrong spelling sorry about that. Didn't proof read before i sent it. 😃
Maybe an over reaching thought, but could PFDs be included in these endeavors? It probably sounds stupid, but it may add a layer hope for survivors. Thank you.
Sounds like a good plan but maybe too LITTLE too LATE !!!
How do you exit the pod if the door is lodged against a hard surface? Any air vents or oxygen tank for extended time inside unit?
Pray often we are protected from this for our families sakes
Carol,,, yea,,, because praying has stopped so many people from being harmed.. or tortured,,, or starved,,, or maimed,,, or killed...
I suggest moving to mid america lmaooo, the west is bad news. I’m on the east coast, we’re vulnerable to hurricanes and a volcano waiting to create a landslide tsunami off the coast of Africa that will hit us but that’s literally it. I’ve seen two tornadoes here in Delaware they’re rare. I’d say Tennessee is a good bet lol, maybe up near the Great Lakes.
Yes, I have had reoccurring dreams of this for years, I feel it's coming. I live in the ring of fire, new Zealand. Christchurch had the huge quake 10 yrs ago.
