I really appreciate you showing more and more stuff for smaller birds and the more "common" varieties that people tend to have. I certainly love watching your macaw videos but sometimes it's hard to relate that to my smaller birds.

I wanted to drop a big thank you for the free bird care goodies you have on your website. They were really helpful for us. We took in a family members 19 year old yellow sided conure, with little previous knowledge of birds. The chop food has made a huge difference in his energy level and attitude. We are still feeding the pellets but he eats all the chops before pellet snacks. Thank you for all the knowledge you share here, it’s been insanely helpful for us.
Would love to see a Quaker version of this! My Quaker's diet is 95%+ seasonal chop but I still do offer some seed mixes (and other treats) but would love to make my own instead of buying premade.
One of my cockatiels is a rescue and we know he's at least 16 years old, I've had him for 5 of those years. He finds some of the seeds and pellets too hard to crack so was avoiding them. Now, before I give him his seed I've been giving it a light crush in a mortar and pestle which allows him to get to the larger seeds and the pellets. Looking forward to trying this mix next, will probably still do that little crush of the seed - better go - he wants me to peel him a grape!

I use this with Ozzy my cockatiel I admit I was using your budgie mix for him before but he's only 18 months old. He loves this mix!! It was super easy to get him onto this mix. Chop he won't touch at all no matter what I try. He's on tops pellets with a freeze dried veg mix from a UK seller. Wish I could afford to get your freeze dried feeding system but as I'm in UK shipping is super expensive especially as Ozzy is super picky!!
I should try this! I already got my cockatiel to eat a bit of your seasonal mix (with grains and veggies) and he also eats pellets. But he still eats "store bought" seed mix so I suppose changing that is also a good idea.

It is related to the size of the bird. While budgies and other small birds such as lovebirds are capable of biting into the larger grains they will usually choose not to and opt for the smaller seeds because it’s easier. Feel free to add the grains if your small bird wants them. Lovebirds can certainly eat the budgie mix but should be capable of eating the grains as well and you should include them. So if you use blueberries mix add some cockatiels size grains to it for your lovebird.

She emphasizes organic, because birds are so sensitive and any kind of toxins can cause them to become sick or die - including pesticides. Organic seeds are less likely to have been grown with pesticides - at least not the toxic kind. When you shop organic you get “Non-GMO” along with organic, very often. I doubt they’d be able to put that label on there if it wasn’t at least non-GMO in some way. In any case, the emphasis is on organic. I have begun to use organic non-toxic, natural everything, and it makes a huge difference for me and my family, and that includes my birds. Sorry if that triggers some people. I had to kick my sister out of my house because she couldn’t stop using super toxic chemicals around my birds, and rolled her eyes when I told her that toxic chemicals can kill birds. She just didn’t care and wanted to be able to use highly toxic things around my birds. Even if you don’t respect your own body, please respect other peoples rights to not want to ingest chemicals, or have their pets lives be cut short by chemicals.

After watching this video and not being able to get the freeze dried seasonal product from your website, i went on the hunt for all of this stuff. I was only able to find about half of the products in store, but even so, she LOVES it! I did add Organic Unsweetened Coconut Flakes as she loves coconut and it has no added sugars and less than 1grm of natural sugar. Is this acceptable? Also, any idea when the freeze dried seasonal feeding system will be back in stock?

I bought your natural feeding system and now after seeing this I have a question. I noticed in the natural feeding system you mention that seeds and things are more for training. Do the veggies and then pellets at night. Would this replace the pellets? When would you incorporate this into the diet for a cockatiel? I bring home a baby cockatiel in about 5 weeks and trying to get all of my ducks in a row before! Thanks!
Also remember that too many pellets in a small bird’s diet (cockatiel, budgies, etc) can cause kidney issues. So seed must always be a part of their diet but in limitation so that they don’t get fat.
Yes my bird eats pellets but I always give him a couple nutriberries so he gets some seed, I have a conure, still in the size range that amongst the peĺlets and veggies, i too imclude seed, small amount but it does matter♥️
I've heard of clipping wings but I've never heard of clipping tails 😳 My boss is a wing clipper, she told me to regularly clip all the birds wings and I just ignored that Lol

What if I'm just feeding SFS, plus a little of Blueberry's seed (now I will be transitioning to this mix). Not feeding pellets as I don't have a decent one available. do you think you could go over why you chose the seeds you chose ? i can only imagine it's because it's less of the fat content of traditional seed mixes/seeds. i personally don't use much if any seed in my parrots diets, only as a treat, but i work at a bird store where the primary diets offered are traditional seed mixes or singular seeds for creating seed mixes. i'm always trying to figure out why/what each seed is used and what it adds to a diet. in my canaries/finches, there are many seeds that are used due to high fat content for seasons such as breeding, etc. (hemp, nyjer, thistle, canola) oats seem like a great protein source for molting, as the birds scarf it down like nothing else. is the goal with this mix to simply cut down on the fats ? i know cockatiels have a tendency to be extremely finicky with their food and can get a bit overweight or have liver issues frequently. do you think there's such a thing as too much protein ? (i genuinely do not know !)
Thank you for this! Just curious, why is the small bird seed mix not good for cockatiels? Is it a seed size issue? Or is it a nutritional issue? I’m still working on getting my guy to eat the SFS, because he’s a seed junkie. He does nibbles on your pellets, but If I could get him to this mix as well, that might help…. EDIT: Oh, and I tried the plain quinoa trick. My guy is super stubborn. He hates quinoa, no matter the color. I’ve tried hiding it, and pressing it into ‘sticky’ foods. He will even pick it out and shove it aside. And he won’t touch the cooked version. 😆 Fortunately the human part of the family love it.

Awesome, thank you for the answer and suggestion. I was feeling a bit frustrated since he doesn’t like the smaller seeds, but this makes me feel a bit better. As long as he’s not missing out nutritionally, I won’t panic. He does love the hemp seed, oats & millet, and he’ll eat buckwheat, so I’ll use those to move him to the other grains. Hopefully he’ll switch to those easier. 😊👍🏼
Can the small birds ie budgies/cockatiels live on just your seasonal feeding system and pellets or do they need more seeds in their diet? Is this mix just a conversion tool to get them off a bad seed mix and then eventually onto just sfs and pellets or do they still need this mix as well?
Hi Jamie, I have two cockatiels and they are females and two female green cheek conures. For this seed mix, do you feed it dry or soak it overnight. My cockatiels preen like that too and there is a lot of feather dust😅
About the same time you put up this video I took an adult cockatiel from my sisters home who is not aggressive the usual 'back off' hiss but he allows you to open the cage to feed and replenish his water. He has been on a bad seed diet mostly sunflower seeds(dear lord) he does not fly. I have had parrots and different kinds of birds growing up. From ring neck doves,budgies,African gray(still kickin😁) to cockatiels and even at one time a crow that was injured🤦 couldn't just leave it so I brought it home as always mom got pissed 😂 but he got better and off he went. Anywho I was like what kind of seed mix can I try to get him eating healthy and low and behold here you post this video😱 it's ment to be😁. I have a budgie as well who I got at 5 months, I've had her for 2 yrs now but I struggle with her eating habits she refuses veggies and almost all fruits except tangerines. Help! Lol I want her around forever!(as long as god is willing).

That’s a lot of different types of oats. Also remember to thoroughly wash your mix before feeding it to your bird because dry grains like this tend to have natural pesticides on them (like saponin, found on quinoa). Which is the reason why humans tend to cook, rinse, or sprout these grains before eating them.

I recommend using these as foraging tools or for training. On days you don't train you could add them to the regular diet but foraging would be the recommend way to feed it so they are still working for the seed.
I live in Bangladesh and have a 3 month old cockatiel. He just got off formula. In the morning, I feed him whatever fresh vegetables I have available, chop them and store them for a week. It contains more of red lentil, chickpea, corn, carrot, cabbage, mint, corriandar etc. (1) I only feed him twice a day, is that okay? He gets hungry around 2pm but I feed him about an hour later for dinner. (2) Can I feed him the same thing as in the morning? I give him the only available seed mix (black white and red millet, sunflower, saflower seed, and nothing much). I'm lost here, we don't have pellets available either. Affordable seed I can add is wheat but I don't have easy/no access to other ingredients :(
Hi SSS I remember Jamie saying for the first year of there lives they NEED to have food available 24/7 all day long because they are babies. After that first year then you can start them on the twice a day routine for food. But you must weigh them to make sure they are getting enough food. I hope Jamie and her husband see this post to help you long even more. :)
I feed my cockatiel your seasonal feeding system in the morning and top's organic parrot pellet for his dinner. Would it be better to give him your seed/grain mix instead of the pellets?
Not instead of but in addition to. I recommend 45% SFS, 45% pellets and 10% homemade seed mix. The seed can be offered in foraging or through training.
Just to clarify, for cockatiels this replaces the seasonal feeding system you normally offer? Is it one or the other, or is the seasonal one not as recommended? (I hope that makes sense)

Barley has a carbo type that is hard to digest by bird, so no for me, but why you use steel oat and oat groats? They are the same oat, just different shape.

Yes my bird eats pellets but I always give him a couple nutriberries so he gets some seed, I have a conure, still in the size range that amongst the peĺlets and veggies, i too imclude seed, small amount but it does matter♥️
I've heard of clipping wings but I've never heard of clipping tails 😳 My boss is a wing clipper, she told me to regularly clip all the birds wings and I just ignored that Lol

What if I'm just feeding SFS, plus a little of Blueberry's seed (now I will be transitioning to this mix). Not feeding pellets as I don't have a decent one available. do you think you could go over why you chose the seeds you chose ? i can only imagine it's because it's less of the fat content of traditional seed mixes/seeds. i personally don't use much if any seed in my parrots diets, only as a treat, but i work at a bird store where the primary diets offered are traditional seed mixes or singular seeds for creating seed mixes. i'm always trying to figure out why/what each seed is used and what it adds to a diet. in my canaries/finches, there are many seeds that are used due to high fat content for seasons such as breeding, etc. (hemp, nyjer, thistle, canola) oats seem like a great protein source for molting, as the birds scarf it down like nothing else. is the goal with this mix to simply cut down on the fats ? i know cockatiels have a tendency to be extremely finicky with their food and can get a bit overweight or have liver issues frequently. do you think there's such a thing as too much protein ? (i genuinely do not know !)

Thank you for this! Just curious, why is the small bird seed mix not good for cockatiels? Is it a seed size issue? Or is it a nutritional issue? I’m still working on getting my guy to eat the SFS, because he’s a seed junkie. He does nibbles on your pellets, but If I could get him to this mix as well, that might help…. EDIT: Oh, and I tried the plain quinoa trick. My guy is super stubborn. He hates quinoa, no matter the color. I’ve tried hiding it, and pressing it into ‘sticky’ foods. He will even pick it out and shove it aside. And he won’t touch the cooked version. 😆 Fortunately the human part of the family love it.
It is related to the size of the bird. While budgies are capable of biting into the larger grains they will usually choose not to and opt for the smaller seeds because it’s easier. Feel free to add the grains if your small bird wants them.
Cockatiels can certainly eat the budgie mix but as larger birds they don’t struggle with grains and you should include them. So if you use blueberries mix add some cockatiels size grains to it for your cockatiel.
Awesome, thank you for the answer and suggestion. I was feeling a bit frustrated since he doesn’t like the smaller seeds, but this makes me feel a bit better. As long as he’s not missing out nutritionally, I won’t panic. He does love the hemp seed, oats & millet, and he’ll eat buckwheat, so I’ll use those to move him to the other grains. Hopefully he’ll switch to those easier. 😊👍🏼
Can the small birds ie budgies/cockatiels live on just your seasonal feeding system and pellets or do they need more seeds in their diet? Is this mix just a conversion tool to get them off a bad seed mix and then eventually onto just sfs and pellets or do they still need this mix as well?
Hi Jamie, I have two cockatiels and they are females and two female green cheek conures. For this seed mix, do you feed it dry or soak it overnight. My cockatiels preen like that too and there is a lot of feather dust😅
About the same time you put up this video I took an adult cockatiel from my sisters home who is not aggressive the usual 'back off' hiss but he allows you to open the cage to feed and replenish his water. He has been on a bad seed diet mostly sunflower seeds(dear lord) he does not fly. I have had parrots and different kinds of birds growing up. From ring neck doves,budgies,African gray(still kickin😁) to cockatiels and even at one time a crow that was injured🤦 couldn't just leave it so I brought it home as always mom got pissed 😂 but he got better and off he went. Anywho I was like what kind of seed mix can I try to get him eating healthy and low and behold here you post this video😱 it's ment to be😁. I have a budgie as well who I got at 5 months, I've had her for 2 yrs now but I struggle with her eating habits she refuses veggies and almost all fruits except tangerines. Help! Lol I want her around forever!(as long as god is willing).

That’s a lot of different types of oats.
Also remember to thoroughly wash your mix before feeding it to your bird because dry grains like this tend to have natural pesticides on them (like saponin, found on quinoa). Which is the reason why humans tend to cook, rinse, or sprout these grains before eating them.

I recommend using these as foraging tools or for training. On days you don't train you could add them to the regular diet but foraging would be the recommend way to feed it so they are still working for the seed.

I live in Bangladesh and have a 3 month old cockatiel. He just got off formula. In the morning, I feed him whatever fresh vegetables I have available, chop them and store them for a week. It contains more of red lentil, chickpea, corn, carrot, cabbage, mint, corriandar etc. (1) I only feed him twice a day, is that okay? He gets hungry around 2pm but I feed him about an hour later for dinner. (2) Can I feed him the same thing as in the morning? I give him the only available seed mix (black white and red millet, sunflower, saflower seed, and nothing much). I'm lost here, we don't have pellets available either. Affordable seed I can add is wheat but I don't have easy/no access to other ingredients :(
Hi SSS I remember Jamie saying for the first year of there lives they NEED to have food available 24/7 all day long because they are babies. After that first year then you can start them on the twice a day routine for food. But you must weigh them to make sure they are getting enough food. I hope Jamie and her husband see this post to help you long even more. :)

Recommendations for an IRN is our Seasonal Feeding System and our pellets. They do not need to be supplemented with the seeds like the smaller birds do.

Barley has a carbo type that is hard to digest by bird, so no for me, but why you use steel oat and oat groats? They are the same oat, just different shape.
