OMG. It works! I am spreading the news far and wide. At 74, and phat, I have been struggling with getting out of chairs since my first hip replacement and knee replacement when I was 61. Woohoo! I couldn’t believe it and had to show off immediately to my husband. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have a disciple. 🎉
I'm fifty-seven and terribly obese, I just watched this video and put it to the test and it works wonderfully! I was able to get up quickly from a deep couch without using my hands at all! You're providing a great service , thank you!
That is fantastic to hear - I am so pleased my video was a great help and thank you so much for letting me know, it's great to hear that my work is helping people!
(Traybern, you're mean. Many factors can contribute to obesity, including certain medications required for other conditions. One should not be insulting to obese people, nor make jokes at their expense).
Hello Will, Your Videos are brilliant. As an 60 year old Funeral Director, I have been fighting my body for years. The body appears to be winning. Since I found your channel, things have improved greatly. A huge thank you, I have Subscribed, and plan to keep following your methods and advice. What a guy. Thanks again. 😀
Wow.... This worked! I'm coming up to 70 and have had a huge problem getting up and down from a seated position with an 😢arthritic hip and knee. I got up first time with little discomfort. Now to practice the more graceful sitting without simply falling onto the chair. Thank you so much for this simple technique, I'm going to show my husband he doesn't need to do his rocket launch to get up any more..❤😂
I've heard quite a few people favour a rocket launch technique! I'm glad my video can offer an alternative for you both and I hope it can offer you some relief too!
I’m 70 and recovering from an injury in my leg muscle. During the course of my recovery I discovered that getting into my car rear end first made it magically easy. I’m finally healing five months later and try to walk everyday. Use it or lose means a lot more than I previously thought. Best wishes!
Late ‘60’s & heavy - Trying this method - nose over toes - Without using my hands a lot of painful strain happens around my knees - almost cannot achieve standing up because of the pain.
I call it “falling forward enough for the body to take over.” I learned it on my own when an autoimmune disorder attacked the nerves in my legs and made them pretty useless. This method also works best when I don’t sit in a place where my knees end up being higher than the seat of the chair (or maybe better stated as higher than the midpoint my hips?). So low chairs, deep sofas, short benches, etc. can take a lot more power than this move can generate.
I am 87. This video is useful not only to persons like me with old age problems but also to the youth who are overweight with modern style of food habits.
Thank you so much. I am 79yrs old, on the heavy side, with slight body/hand tremors. I just followed your trick. I got up quickly, easily without support.
Thank you, lots of people think I talk too much (and maybe I do!) but I think it's very important to explain why I recommend actions and what it is that's happening when we perform them
Dear Will, as I am now almost 77, I wish I had found your RUclips site at least 25 yeaes ago. Still better late than never. I helped our dog to buy me a copy of your book for Christmas so I have no excuse not to get on with the exercises. I have had 2 falls in the past 3 months but thanks to your getting up off the floor exercises I was able to get myself up and moving about. Next time I might breaķ something so I am keen to improve my balance and strength. Thank you, Carol UK
I have your book and love the Friday tips. I’m 75 yrs old and have arthritis and Morton’s neuroma in toes on my right foot. I started doing your exercises each day, stretches also since this past January. I only wish I had found this book years ago!
Thank you so much. This really works! I am 90 yrs old and I've been rising, from a chair, all wrong, but now, due to your demonstration, and practicing, I have found that I feel so much better about this. God bless you, sir.
have been using the getting up portion for quite awhile and try to teach my wife who is having a lot of difficulty with pain post knee replacement surgery 11 months ago. Now I can use it for sitting down. I had a different technique for my wedding folks when photographing. Because most people are "floppers" and I wanted to keep the head forward of the tummy I used my normal standing pose of one for forward (which depends on the direction of the body being posed) and weight on the opposite leg/foot. So I found that by asking the subject to stand with the rear leg touching the chair and then to sit "straight" down, the problem was solved. Not quite as good as this method but something anyone could do when shown.
Been doing chair squats, 30 - 50 reps a night, for the last couple months, but all the times using s little boost from my hands. Just now did a set of 6 or 7 "proper" squats with this technique with no problem. I'm pretty amazed by the improvement🎉
Thank you for your advice. I am 82 and an amputee right leg above knee. Although I do not get much trouble getting out of a chair, this advice is brilliant, I have recently got nueropathy in my good foot, so this tip will be useful to me and my friends I do know someone who has trouble, so I will pass it on. Thank you. 😊
I'm 62, with arthritis in both knees, both hips and my neck and this demonstration is using the type of chair I can usually manage. My problem is getting out of much lower seating, like a settee. I also can no longer reach my toes to cut my nails and I struggle with bottom wiping too. Any tips here would be very helpful as I'm fiercely independent and would really like to remain so for as long as is possible. Dignity is important to we older folk.
It is for arthritis very important to keep moving, it will keep your joint more souple and you need to strenghten your muscles in order to support the jonts. Without moving a lot and gain muscle strength your perspective will be much less good. For cleaning your bottom you can buy a bidet what you can connect to the toilet, or a simple toilet shower can do the job. Keep moving, make a schedule, you are much too young to live like an elderly!
Get yourself a bidet you need elec ran to by your toilet look at many on u tube. As you scroll look they will come to you huge discounts. Some flush automatically. Have heated seats warm water filters and self cleaning blue light for disinfectant. Worth every cent Costco has handicapped toilet bidet built in. 1/2 Price that I paid. Save. $$$$$$$. No toilet paper. Save power not use heated blow dryer comes with bidet. Have. Men’s cotton handkerchiefs to pat dry.
@@lienbijs1205He didn’t say he didn’t move. Where did you get this? I am full of arthritis from Lyme disease, not to mention neuropathy and full body pain from the Lyme. I walk every day, stretch and lift small weights. But I have the same issues. It’s difficult to do anything when you have chronic pain but it doesn’t mean that we don’t.
I'm 77 years old and fairly fit but my knees have started to ache a little so I began to practise getting up from a chair each morning without holding onto anything (I have only previously managed to do it 5 times). I decided to try your method and am pleased to say I am able to do get up and down from the chair with little or no discomfort. Thank you.
Thanks. My PT taught me this technique years ago and it really helps. As i have gotten older and with more health issues i am more and more unable to do it but it is still helpful when i can. Using the second chair does help.
I'm 79 and I tried this method. Didn't work and I still had to use my hands. It only worked for me, if the chair was not deep or cushioned, such as a wooden dining room chair. But I will keep trying.
You make fitness seem easy and doable .I am 74 and have vouched for your well researched and practical advice to others. Will buy your book yet need your motivating videos as well.
Short videos like this with highly practical tips are very much appreciated and acknowledged. Even if they are published years ago, they remain as priceless practice. Thank you Will for your videos.
OMG! It works 😊 I've been struggling with standing up because of a recent miniscule knee injury. I'd usually bum-shuffle to the end of the settee, then put my weight on my good leg, whilst pushing up (left and right hands) from the seat. I'd wobble on the way to standing up, and feel weak and off-balance. The 'nose over toes" manoeuvre looked difficult, but I've just tried it a few times in a row and it worked, easily every time. Thanks so much for the information, Will, easy to understand, concise and TRUE!😊
I'm 81 and have been doing exercises watching different videos on Internet. Several do getting out of chair by holding arms about should length and that works so well for me. Watching your way is also helpful.
Right! You have to make sure that the chair is behind you before you sit back down. It wasn't, and I fell to the floor in the restaurant last year. I now reach behind me first to make sure it's there in place. Your moves are for thinner people. Not for larger people like myself, or seniors with balance or mobility issues.
🤯🤯🤯 My brain has never spoken to my hips. It freaked out a little when I first started to try this... and then I just stood up 🤦🏾♀️ I've run 2 full marathons, I do resistance training 3 times a week but I still fall into chains 😕 Can't believe the solution was so simple. 🙄 THANK YOU!
🙏 many thanks for this great example, exercise! 😊 I do wonder however, why it’s almost ALWAYS younger people and “fit as a fiddle” who present these wonderful tips.. 😊
I was, well skeptical of this video when I started it. When you gave the firs tip I paused the video and tried it and immediately stood up. I haven't done that in years. You've just got a new subscriber.
Hi Will. My late husband had difficulty getting off me when finished doing the "nasty". My new lover is starting to have the same issues. (Apparently, their bodies are getting over stressed...) What do you suggest? Thanks, we love your videos!
Will, I’m 79 years old with arthritis, early stage osteopenia, a knee replacement, 4 or more abdominal surgeries 3:17 and a fractured- pinned back together hip. First of all a million thanks for the video on how to turn. The so called”foot cross over” is EXACTLY what caused me to fall so that video is a godsend and I sent it all my 79 plus young friends! The nose over toes is also brilliant! I found you just in the nick of time! Any tips for getting in and out of bed more easily would be appreciated. God bless you and your work!
Hi Will ,this video is much.appreciated, but I wish that you also demonstrated a sitting to stand for example from a lounge. It can be challenging for some people. Love the video non the less
Hi there - I'm pleased you found the video helpful - I will bear this in mind for the future - I try to film all my content from my office, so I have limited furnishings - however I will try mixing up my filming location
This is genious recovering from bilateral knee replacements this is simple but oh so helpful 🙌. Thank u very much . . . Jenni (5wks post op aged) 74 👍🏻
I think this advice video and the other one you covered about how to get up from the floor or two the most valuable pieces of advice people over 50 or anyone having difficulty with mobility can get from you thank you very much
Thank you so much for this idea and i will surely try this. Pl also make a video of how one climbs the staircase up and down easily without keeping a hand on the knees and without getting noticed by others that he or she is becoming old.
Hi there - I have the following video about preventing knee pain when climbing the stairs which may be of interest to you! ruclips.net/video/NrUZBqWAeaQ/видео.html
I am 4 mths off 96 and have a very painful right knee I tried but still had to use my hands but moving as far forward as possible made a big difference Thank you.
very useful exercises that you are showing for us 50+ came across this channel when almost resigned to various problems in day to day tasks but now very happy that there's a solution for all that very nice easy way of explaining a big thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. Following your advice has actually made my life better: At 74, I can now stand and sit with much less effort or discomfort. I look forward to watching your other content, especially on improving overall muscle tone and core strength.
That is fantastic to hear, I'm so pleased my advice has been so helpful, that really makes my work worth it - I hope my videos continue to offer useful support!
Thanks. I’m 70 and recovering from an injury in my leg muscle. During the course of my recovery I discovered that getting into my car rear end first made it magically easy. I’m finally healing five months later and try to walk everyday. Use it or lose means a lot more than I previously thought.
I am amazed that this works! I was a bit skeptical because most of these ideas are pie in the sky and they never get to the point until after about an hour in the video. Many, many thanks🎉
Thank you for this. My knees are really bothering me whenever I exercise and for a few days after so trying to learn how to use other muscles correctly to give my knees some relief is a life saver!
I just tried this. Amazing. I was able to get up out of a chair without using my hands! There's still some pain in my arthritic knees, but so much easier to get up and down. Thank you!
Thank you very much! I just watched several episodes and got more great information than I had from many sessions of physical therapy. I joined your channel today.
Happened to watch this with the sound off. Because of that, I saw what you were doing in a unique way. I took screenshots of the arrows you show, makes all the sense in the world. Now I’ll watch again with the sound engaged. I’m sending this to others who I hope will subscribe too. Hope we can all get to the place where furniture design will be assistive. It’s okay to modify furniture placement. Big substantial furniture is up against the wall. Doing what? Move the couch to the center of the room. Take a photo of your living room. Diddle with moving things, safety and comfort, and assistive placement. How can we do this better? In your room, the white table to your left could be placed chair side to be used as an assistive lift. I have a few walkers, one has wheels. I have a piece of attractive wood used to make a shelf. Use small plant pots, but if needed, I can remove easily. Change it around often. I may get more because it’s a substantial grip which helps me return to a standing position. The shelf is heavy enough to stay in place, but I give it some grip with rubbery shelf paper. When I need a walker, just lift the shelf off. Walkers are actually a thing of beauty, well-balanced and rugged. Not useful in a closet, bring them out to re-purpose.
I also have that problem if I sit for too long, but noticed if I get up every 30 minutes and walk around at least a couple of minutes, I’m not as stiff. If I am stiff when I get up, I wait a minute or two to make sure I have good balance before I start walking
Your tricks are worth a million. Subscribers. At 74 (not obese, still cycling and gardening daily) i feel grateful for any trick, that helps me move my body with more ease. Living in India i am sitting on the floor a lot and would love some advice concerning getting up from there with ease and grace. Thanks for sharing your wisdom! Subbed!💖Ma

You're welcome - I like to get as much useful information in as possible but I try to make my videos as to the point as possible!
We also don't want to see all caps.

Except it took >1.5 minutes to get to it.
I agree! Except that I'm not old I'm only 74½ going on 75. Thanks 4 the great video.

Amazing how someone at the age of 57 has yet to learn to get up.
I really appreciate physiotherapists. They work magic with their cool body knowledge.
Nose over the Toes WORKS!!! I was shocked at how efficiently it worked. THANK YOU!!!

This young pup knows what he's taking about. I've had arthritic knees since before he was born. I just finished experimenting. Works great. :)
Pleased I could offer some help!
I love it how you dissect the movement and explain each part for better understanding.
Thank you, lots of people think I talk too much (and maybe I do!) but I think it's very important to explain why I recommend actions and what it is that's happening when we perform them
I'm @ 82. Thanks so much. I had no idea it could be that easy. No one explained it to me before. Thank you thank you John in Florida

Thank you so much!
Thanks. I’m 70 and recovering from an injury in my leg muscle. During the course of my recovery I discovered that getting into my car rear end first made it magically easy. I’m finally healing five months later and try to walk everyday. Use it or lose means a lot more than I previously thought.
Fantastic move, worked perfectly on the first try.
That's brilliant to hear!
I am amazed that this works! I was a bit skeptical because most of these ideas are pie in the sky and they never get to the point until after about an hour in the video. Many, many thanks🎉
This helped me so much as my knees get hurt standing up and sitting down . Thank you so much.

I just tried this. Amazing. I was able to get up out of a chair without using my hands! There's still some pain in my arthritic knees, but so much easier to get up and down. Thank you!
I'm so pleased it was helpful! Wishing you all the best going forward :)
Will use this with a couple older people I know. Thanks so much. Tried it myself ahead of recommending it to them.. Very fluid and easy. All the best.

This really works. I’m 78 and always use my always use my hands to stand up. Thanks for the tip
In your room, the white table to your left could be placed chair side to be used
as an assistive lift.
That’s works really well! Thanks. However, starting to walk after standing is also difficult due to stiffness. I’m not sure how to improve this.
I also have that problem if I sit for too long, but noticed if I get up every 30 minutes and walk around at least a couple of minutes, I’m not as stiff. If I am stiff when I get up, I wait a minute or two to make sure I have good balance before I start walking
Oh, wow!!!! This works. This is going to make my life so much easier. No more dreading getting up from a chair. Thanks so much.
THANK YOU THAT REALLY WORKS!
That's great to hear!
