  • Part 1 of some thoughts/review/info on the Game King 2019-in-1 multi-game JAMMA PCB for arcade cabinets. Also, if you have a Game King but can't get any video output from it this covers one possible cause.
    One thing I misspoke about was the sub-PCB handling the video change, that is totally incorrect and I knew that before I said it. The video output is changed on the software level, so you can get 15khz video directly from the motherboard VGA out if you splice a monitor cable straight into the RBG/sync harness to your monitor. That was what I was doing prior to finishing my homemade connector cable.

    I have the older version of that unit. Got it in about 2008. Mine has no metal case. Games Family was the name of it. Has the same instruction manual. It was originally about 1925 games. I had to plug In the little harness to my cabinet so i could play 6 button fighting games. I have it hooked up in a Super Neo 29 (Neo Geo) Japanese cabinet. About 6 or 7 years back i bought an ugraded hard drive with 3025 games on it. There used to be a forum for people that owned these so people could discuss everything but it went offline some years back.

    Hi from Hamburg. Just found your video regarding the game platform and indeed I have the problem, that the video signals are obviously not transmitted to the jamma connector. There is a 5 pin cable connector with one side open(without connector). This connector suits on the platine above. Is this properly the connection for a vga connector fitting in the connector on the plantin underneath? If this is the case, do you might have an idea which cable goes where?
    Would be great if you could give me any advice 🫶.
    Many thanks
    Rene

      You are correct, this 5 pin connector is from the VGA out of the computer to the other board. You could always hook a computer monitor directly into your Game King to see if that is the problem, but from what you describe I'd say you're missing the same cable I was. They did not include this when I bought it so I had to make my own. My homemade connector as shown in the video looks absolutely awful, but it works!
      There are 5 pins from the VGA connector you must use: red, green, blue, ground, and horizontal/vertical sync. Horizontal and vertical sync are two separate pins on the VGA side that you twist together to make one connection on the JAMMA board side. The pin numbers are 1) red 2) green 3) blue 5) ground 13) h-sync 14) v-sync. Here is a link to a diagram for the VGA connector. You could buy a new DB-15 connector and make your own, or just splice up an old monitor cable.

      For the 5 pin connection on the top JAMMA board, I do not remember the exact order the wires go in. It may be labeled but if not it could be easily determined with a multimeter or visually following the traces to the JAMMA edge. I hope this helps you out.

    Hi, I have just acquired one of these in a tabletop cabinet. I was just wondering where/what the single red wire next to the bios battery is connected??

      If it's the same one I'm thinking of, it's a thin red +5v wire that runs from the top of the hard drive to a molex connector on the power supply.

      @@neiljemmerson8826 Mine shipped without a battery in it, placing one in it made no difference so I just pulled it back out. I wouldn't think that would be an issue. You may want to reseat both the RAM chip and HDD in the IDE slot. Sounds silly but it fixes mine the couple times mine would not boot to anything but a black screen.
      They don't exactly use high quality parts in these things, so even the tiniest knock could cause a connection to come loose. If the HDD is the issue, you should at least get a self-test then a boot disk prompt.

      C T If you're tight on funds, comfortable with cab wiring,and have the time to fool with it using a PC with a J-Pac and maybe ArcadeVGA card would be a better setup. However if you don't have the extra time required to set it all up and want a plug & play solution that is slightly more expensive these are the way to go.

    How did you make that cable that you use on the VGA output to get 15khz from the jamma harness? I really want to buy this for my supergun and the seller not including that cable is my only concern.

    • @MisterAzathoth
      @MisterAzathoth  6 лет назад

      Mr. 6's&7's It's pretty easy. I was previously using an old monitor cable I had cut and spliced a CGA monitor connector on the other end to plug directly into the arcade monitor from the monitor VGA out. It looked like garbage so I broke down and made a proper cable (like should have been included) so the video would go through the JAMMA connector like it should.
      Pinouts diagrams are easy to find, you use 6 pins on the VGA end (red, green, blue, ground, horizontal/vertical sync). You could use this to run a PC straight to a arcade monitor, but remember you need to be running Soft15hz or similar to have the video signal output 15hz.

    I read killer instinct 1 and 2 was on the game king. Do they run correctly? Other 3d games like tekken seems to lag a lot and suffers from slowdown. Can anyone help?

    • @MisterAzathoth
      @MisterAzathoth  8 месяцев назад

      Unfortunately both KI games on the Game King don't run at 60fps. 1 seems to run a bit better than 2, but there's noticable slowdown and frame skipping. Changing the version of MAME it's running doesn't help either; the processor is just too underpowered.
      Newer versions of the Game King are based on a dual-core processor so those might run it without issue.

    Hey, great video. I found mine has interference lines when turned on. I have limited this down to the jamma board component… but no idea what could be wrong?

    • @MisterAzathoth
      @MisterAzathoth  Год назад +1

      If it's the JAMMA connector causing it, you could always bypass it by splicing a VGA cable direct to your monitor harness. That's how I had mine hooked up before I rigged up that cable they forgot to include.

    • @Gflork
      @Gflork Год назад

      Oh that’s a great idea.. any links of info of what colours to match? I assume this is the plug that goes to the chassis board from the jamma harness. I’m sure that will fix the issue and save me from buying a whole new board

    • @MisterAzathoth
      @MisterAzathoth  Год назад

      @@Gflork Search "arcade VGA harness pinout" and you'll come across the diagram. I don't think wire colors are standard so you'll have to use a multimeter to make sure they go to the right pins. It's simple to do, you can either buy a new DB-15 connector and build from scratch, or just cut the end off an old VGA cable and splice into it. There's just 5 (6?) pins you connect to. One end goes into the VGA monitor out on the back of the Game King and the other end goes straight into the video sync harness on your monitor.
      I mentioned in the video the seller I bought this off of forgot to include the little patch cable that normally connects from the monitor out to the JAMMA board. Prior to me making my own, I used a homemade cable made just the way we are talking about, running straight from the VGA out to my monitor.
      I misspoke in the video but learned this afterwards. The JAMMA board in there has nothing to do with the 15khz video conversion required for a regular tube monitor, it's all done in Windows software. If you have your Game King setup to output 15khz, that's how the signal comes out of the VGA port, so using a cable like we're talking about and bypassing the JAMMA edge connector works without any issues. You could also use this cable to hook a Windows PC straight to your arcade monitor, as long as you have Soft15khz running.

    • @Gflork
      @Gflork Год назад

      @@MisterAzathoth perfect thanks mate. Yeah it connects into a 5 connector harness. I’ve noticed the vga to the jamma board takes both sync lines into it but there’s only one video sync being used to the monitor. I assume you just used the one composite sync connector and went straight to the monitor chassis with that? Ignoring the other sync line? Thanks heaps for your help. :-) bugger the guy who sold you it forgot to package the cable!

    • @MisterAzathoth
      @MisterAzathoth  Год назад +1

      @@Gflork It's been several years since I made this, but it looks like that's how I did mine. I twisted both sync lines together coming from the VGA pins, so on the monitor end I just have 5 connectors (R,G,B, ground, and the two syncs put together).

      I can type out the instructions if you still need them. If I'm not mistaken you'll need access to 4 buttons on the P1 side and all 6 on P2 side to access them. For games that have an on screen dipswitch menu (like Neo Geo or Midway games) it brings that up, otherwise it brings up the standard MAME menu for dip settings.
