my opinions on each player in their final XI and some general stuff: 1. Although we should consider the whole year, in the same way winning the UCL is valued over domestic achievements, world cup accolades even though it's just 7 games should and do hold huge weight in building a toty. Martinez - I will contradict what I said above as I would choose Courtois. Although Martinez was brilliant during the WC he didn't do enough for me throughout the year to warrant team of the YEAR. Not entirely his fault as he plays at a smaller club than his competitors. He also got an award for his WC performances already. Alongside his league and UCL double, Courtois was the ONLY bright spark in the Belgium side. Hakimi - can't really argue with this he was brilliant for Morocco and inspired an entire nation maybe even continent. Also helps that the usual standout RBs didn't have great years. Marquinhos - classy player and deserves to go in this team. Gvardiol - as good as he was in the World Cup he certainly isn't the 1st or 2nd best CB in the world. That would be T.Silva, VVD, or Dias. But those guys didn't hit the heights in 2022 that they so often do so Gvardiol's inclusion to me is reasonable but I'd pick any of the 3 I mentioned before him. Davies - arguably the worst inclusion even if Saka had made it into the team. He was injured for more than 100 days in the second half of last season (still 2022) alone. And aside from one excellent goal in the world cup, he really didn't do much as Canada lost all three group games. Cancelo and Theo Hernandez both had more successful years, both individually and in terms of trophies. I would choose Hernandez as he was THE main man in Milan's first league title in 10 years and got to the WC final. Modric and De Bruyne pick themselves so no need to discuss them. Valverde - he was brilliant and will surely go on to be one of the best midfielders in the world but the guests completely ignored the fact that Mane was an option for the midfielder slot. Whilst it's true Mane should be in the front 3 he is down as a midfield nominee and so he deserves a spot. He captained his country to their first ever AFCON win, carried on scoring for Liverpool and continued that in Bayern. He also came 2nd in the ballon d'or so certainly deserves a spot. Messi - honestly thought that Robbie was joking with saying Messi isn't a RW. The only reason he didn't play there for Argentina is that their 2nd best player also happens to be a RW. Messi played that position and did it excellently for all of 2022 except the last 7 games in the WC. He is the easy choice there. Mbappe - the same applies here - easy choice. Worth noting that Robbie had no problem putting Mbappe LW even though he doesn't always play there but made a point of moving Messi to try to include Saka. Clear bias Benzema - the only option up front both on individual performances. The ballon d'or winner shouldn't be a difficult choice. We can't forget how good he was last season in the UCL.

my opinions on each player in their final XI and some general stuff:
1. Although we should consider the whole year, in the same way winning the UCL is valued over domestic achievements, world cup accolades even though it's just 7 games should and do hold huge weight in building a toty.
Martinez - I will contradict what I said above as I would choose Courtois. Although Martinez was brilliant during the WC he didn't do enough for me throughout the year to warrant team of the YEAR. Not entirely his fault as he plays at a smaller club than his competitors. He also got an award for his WC performances already. Alongside his league and UCL double, Courtois was the ONLY bright spark in the Belgium side.
Hakimi - can't really argue with this he was brilliant for Morocco and inspired an entire nation maybe even continent. Also helps that the usual standout RBs didn't have great years.
Marquinhos - classy player and deserves to go in this team.
Gvardiol - as good as he was in the World Cup he certainly isn't the 1st or 2nd best CB in the world. That would be T.Silva, VVD, or Dias. But those guys didn't hit the heights in 2022 that they so often do so Gvardiol's inclusion to me is reasonable but I'd pick any of the 3 I mentioned before him.
Davies - arguably the worst inclusion even if Saka had made it into the team. He was injured for more than 100 days in the second half of last season (still 2022) alone. And aside from one excellent goal in the world cup, he really didn't do much as Canada lost all three group games. Cancelo and Theo Hernandez both had more successful years, both individually and in terms of trophies. I would choose Hernandez as he was THE main man in Milan's first league title in 10 years and got to the WC final.
Modric and De Bruyne pick themselves so no need to discuss them.
Valverde - he was brilliant and will surely go on to be one of the best midfielders in the world but the guests completely ignored the fact that Mane was an option for the midfielder slot. Whilst it's true Mane should be in the front 3 he is down as a midfield nominee and so he deserves a spot. He captained his country to their first ever AFCON win, carried on scoring for Liverpool and continued that in Bayern. He also came 2nd in the ballon d'or so certainly deserves a spot.
Messi - honestly thought that Robbie was joking with saying Messi isn't a RW. The only reason he didn't play there for Argentina is that their 2nd best player also happens to be a RW. Messi played that position and did it excellently for all of 2022 except the last 7 games in the WC. He is the easy choice there.
Mbappe - the same applies here - easy choice. Worth noting that Robbie had no problem putting Mbappe LW even though he doesn't always play there but made a point of moving Messi to try to include Saka. Clear bias
Benzema - the only option up front both on individual performances. The ballon d'or winner shouldn't be a difficult choice. We can't forget how good he was last season in the UCL.
