Yeahhhh we went to lunch after this and both of us did a good deal of complaining about the weather. It's pretty traditional ;) Bob is a great guy indeed and glad to have him willing to work on our stuff.
I WOULD do a 401 but the problem is they are a bit "unattainable" for most people, which is why I'm looking at a 360 much MUCH less expensive. Thanks for watching and coming along for the Adventure!
You definitely want to go indy heads on the AMC. We had around 500 plus on a 72 360. We had it in a 77 cj5. It was initially gonna be set up for racing at gravelrama in Cleves Ohio, but we had fun whooping ass on the street with it. VERY dangerous though...
Why not try to find a 401 crank and use a set of Molinar rods with it? The 390 and 401 can't take much of an overbore so it there should be more 401 cranks available than blocks. I think a 030 over 360 with a 401 crank yields a 385, but don't quote me. The 360 rods will need to be replaced regardless as they are the weak point. If possible, see if you can get a 1973 or newer crank as earlier ones have a difference at the flange to run the Borg Warner automatic trans. If not, then there are parts out there to compensate for the difference. BTW, I'm also building a 360 79 Spirit, but it started out as a 232 DL trim not an AMX (I have the AMX spoiler, suspension and gauges though)
I HAVE been kicking around the idea of doing a 390 or 401 crank in this thing... depends if I can find one locally and if I can get a good deal on it. Rods, absolutely, not even a question. Pistons will be forged because, not much more money and I'll be able to dial in my compression right where I want it. Of all the vehicles I have owned that little 79 AMX is easily one of the most fun and most popular rides. Glad to hear you are bringing one of it's brethren back to life too, what are you planning for your 360 build?
Man I've built so many AMC V8s...I always wanted to find a way to make multi port fuel injection a possibility on one just because it would make adding boost so much easier
Fortunately now with the modern TBI EFI systems it's a whole lot easier than it used to be. Certainly not as accurate and customizable as the multi port but it's pretty damn good.
@@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin I don't think anyone really developed a good intake to work on an AMC V8...I know there's some Edelbrock units out there but they are getting mighty expensive and haven't seen any product development in 3 decades so even the TBI setups are limited by the intake runners and head design and the stock cast iron 4 barrel intakes are super rare to find and weighed about 50 pounds lol....I spent years building 258s and 304/360s for jeeps so if ya ever need advice I'm pretty familiar with them!
= AMC V-8 = Cast / Nodular crankshafts ... I'm not sure about Horsepower / Torque limits but WiSeNhEiMeR the PINK FunnyCar bodied EC4WD Sand Drag JEEP CJ-5 ran TWO (2) Season's shifting at 9,250 RPM with a stock Crankshaft it was running a 290ci AMC V-8 Crank with Oil Holes Chamfered & CARILLO BBC +0.10 long connecting Rods & had the Rod Journals turned down to fit in a 4-Bolt Mains AMC INDY Stock Block Racing Program Cast-Iron Block bored to 3.875" cylinder size After disassembly = the ROD & MAIN Bearings did not even need replace ... on another NOTE: the Stock Cast Aluminum OEM AMC PISTONS are only G@@D to 6,750 RPM but they do a nice job of ALUMINIZING the INSIDE of Tubular Headers when they VAPORIZE 🙂 ( ask me and WILD WILLIE DAVIES how I know ) ... COOP ...
Some excellent information there Sir thank you! I don't plan on getting anywhere NEAR 9,250RPM but if I can get it done and keep it running around 6500 I would be happy! Definitely considered doing the Chevy rod conversion with some custom pistons... don't want to spend a pile of money on a time bomb that's for sure! No factory rods or pistons in this thing!
It is indeed, and for good reason! Have to change nothing, engine out engine in. We're going to make this a BIT more mean than most people would want/need in a Jeep though ;)
There are definitely some cam conversations in the works and Isky is no doubt going to be a part of that. Unfortunately it's a bit of a challenge these days trying to get a flat tappet for any of the old school stuff that ISN'T Ford/Chevy so... we'll see.
Austin before you drill and tap your 350 heads look at your exhaust manifolds no place for bolt holes that I can see on them that's a bad design like my nova weld on door hinges
I HAVE a set of manifolds with the front and rear most holes in them I'll be using fortunately. With how massively annoying it is to do exhaust gaskets on these things I'm going to do everything I can to NOT put this together with issues
Austin when are you going to get back on Katrina’s ride. Here you just paid down 2 of your credit cards. Maybe it’s time to bring your car stable to a reasonable rate
That's a very very good question, the issue remains, as it does with many of my projects, a problem of lift time/space. With the production levels in the shop it's just been impossible to get any real time to get the car in and put together. Believe me, it's massively frustrating to us as well. But customers pay the bills, Austin's stuff doesn't. I DO need to cut down the fleet though that's for sure and I'm working on it!
That's a valid conversation to be had for sure, still hard for me to wrap my head around the Hemi V8s being dead AGAIN after it's literally been what brought Chrysler/Dodge back to life
@@mark8lifestyle322 it's extremely confusing to me, why in the WORLD would you walk away from what is essentially your brand identity? We'll see in the coming years how it plays out, but I don't know many people who are "Mopar Guys" that are excited about this!
Yep, the Hispanics have a saying about folks like you Austin, you is one loco tamely! Olds, Pontiac, Chevy, AMC (Ford) and even the Klingon (Mopar), And they called me crazy for doing Olds, Pontiac & early Chev. AMC content is always an instant like
Well thank ya Sir I appreciate it! ;)
Filled Rich’s shop and yard up so now storing stuff at Bob’s.😂
Essentially yes ;) However Bob will probably just work on it and hand me a bill, which, I GUESS is a pretty good thing? ;)
I love the old school AMC stuff. I'd love to do a blown 401 AMX. Looking foward to watching all your projects evolve.

So, we're polishing turds?
That's essentially my entire fleet, some turds more polished than others.
Hellcat amx = hell yeah but old engine sounds more right
I think so too, really ran myself around and around about this but I finally made the decision. Do it Old School.
Why did you not send all of this with me, I could make room! Would have been happy to do so!
Have to ease Bob into this, don't want him kicking me out of the shop just yet ;)
