It was not the nature but the Bavarian government who demolished the buildings and planted trees so nobody would go there to visit "Hitler´s house". Otherwise they would still be there, as they did until the 1950´s and some parts until the 1990´s.

A wonderful selection of Then & Now. I've had the pleasure of visiting and staying in this area back in the 80's and absolutely loved it. We stayed in what was then the Hotel General Walker, which is sadly no more.

They weren’t destroying history. They were targeting what they believed was a military point of interest in a global conflict. Any disapproving judgement from someone 80 years hence was probably the furthest thing from their minds! Also-the owner of the Berghof destroyed a fair bit of ‘history’ in his time…

Yes, where the Berghof was currently located there is a path that connects the Hotel Zum Turken with the Documentation Center, and all that can be seen of the mansion is the retaining wall and some rubble.

miepmiepzoefzoef, thank you very much for your correction. You are absolutely right and I am aware of the "mistake" made, but the truth is that it was intentional, since the idea was to show what was the main entrance to the Berghof and what currently remains, and if I had exactly respected the distances, the comparison It wouldn't have been as effective. However, and I repeat, you are correct.

The local authority attends the site a few times a years to spread rubble around from other demolitions for souvenir hunters to pickup.

@@Lecruque It’s well known to the authorities that neo Nazi types have some weird compulsion to take souvenirs.
Dumping a few buckets of rubble around to provide the misguided with trinkets costs the municipality nothing.
If you have been there you would know the site isn’t just left to rot in the woods. Workers from the municipality regularly inspect to make sure the ventilation covers and security gates are maintained and damage repaired. Video even shows the new concrete cap they installed to the tunnel ventilation. So there is plenty of evidence that the authorities are doing all they can to deter and distract souvenir hunters - enjoy your special rock along with the 100,000s of others who go there every summer and probably have a special rock of their own. Obviously in your mind this modest villa over the decades has supplied tens of millions of souvenirs for the gullible.

I'm English and I've been to Obersalzberg twice in last 20 years. It is almost impossible to see anything of the Berghof as it's been destroyed and overgrown with trees. I think that it was a mistake to destroy and remove all evidence of the building in the 1950s. The house should have been left as a ruin, and would be a warning to any neo Nazis, that this is what you get with Nazi policies. A great historical monument has been lost. By the way, the bunkers under the Turk hotel are fantastic! Great video, thank you for posting.
