4501 toted Southern Railway coal hoppers up and down the mountain for almost 20 years in my hometown of Stearns, Kentucky. She was our Number 12 on the Kentucky and Tennessean Railway. Long live The First Lady of Stearns.....
Excellent! What a shame nobody will get to ride a real excursion train any more on a main line with fast track. I remember riding a few in the early 80s between Louisville and Huntingburg and every car was jam packed and they could have sold twice the tickets they did. The 4501 is my favorite as I grew up watching the Southern and that green is just so nice looking.
I rode 4501's last NS mainline trip from Huntsville, Al. to Chattanooga in the 80s with two four axles in tow to get over Raccoon Mtn. With 27 loaded Tuscan Reds. What a sight!!
when i was younger i would fall asleep to the sound of 4501's whistle that was playing on a 4 hour vhs video i had, sadly the video finally went kaput, but it was a good time.
If they (CSX) would only take more of the initiative to restore ACL#1504 beyond being a pretty painted lady. She's Too Good an engine to just sit in a back parking lot like some statue.
@switchstand I don't know if you guys are aware I'm sure you might be by now, but N&S is bringing back their steam program! Sadly if you don't live in and around Southern Tenn. you won't see much of it until they expand hopefully back to a larger area of excursions would love to see this engine and others like it back in action here in Kentucky
As much as I hate to say it she will painted black. I love the green and gold. I dearly have hopped it would stay that way, but I helped paint her black. So I can say only the headlight (ka waiting painting) is still green.
@PRL2204 Triple Crown always has the ride away and moves at what ever the top speed is allowed on the line!!! They always come flying through when i see them!!!
I wonder when N&S starts running this engine if they will paint it back to its original Southern green or if they will keep it Black as it was the last time I saw in at the TVRM?
Now we all know that the 4501 is being restored and should be back into excursions in the next year or so, but the burning question in my mind is will they keep it Freight train black or will they put it back into the Passenger train green that made this engine so famous?
But the excursions on NS with #630 and #4501 will be back! #630 in 2011, and both in 2012. A future NS steam excursion train will probably look like this. They are going to expand to other states but start in Chattanooga, TN area first because that's where TVRM the partner with NS in these new excursions is and the locomotives to be used in the program are from there. There will most likely be a diesel in the train like shown here for backup and braking.
611 more likely then 1218, the 611 and 1218 are owned by the city, not the museum, so the city would have to restore it, and the 611 will be about 1 million. the 1218 has a cracked frame, so that will be very costly.
GREAT NEWS!!! June 30, 2010 NS OFFICIALLY announces the return to steam in 2011! Most likely it will be 4501 in 2011 for her 100th birthday, and possibly J611 in 2012 for NS's 30th anniversary! See my page for a short video with info and links to the official press release from NS!
So judging from a picture of 4501 with her sides off, you concluded that not only was she definitely going to be restored, but that she was going to be operating with NS on a new steam program? You've got to be kidding me.
Almost true. The only way the 611 or 1218 will ever run again is if the VMT gets ALOT of funding or someone takes on the project. And with the current state the A is in, I would bet against seeing it run again.
If they really wanted to be authentic they'd put a smoke deflector back on it like it used on the old "CNO&TP rat hole" line through Kentucky and Tennessee .

The Southern will always serve the South. Got to love her in all her green glory!
4501 sure enjoys screaming and singing through crossings
She truly is a beautiful machine one my favorite locomotives in he work I'm going to the tvrm to see her this weekend
best whistle of all steam engines
Thank you for sharing this great footage!
I was out there back then to see her!
5***** and Favorite!
I.m really love 4501 painted green she's looks absolutely beautiful
Also 4501 is a male plus i dont like green and i have a fear of green paint not leaves or bushes
I got to ride 4501 under both colors. Green was Southern's trademark.

My grandfather was engineer of the 4501 in the early 1900's and my father has the HO scale replica of this engine.
She looked good in her green paint
I sure hope that she will be back in service by next year! Because I can't wait to hear her whistle when she is finished!
Fantastic Pictures on all you sites. Brings back a lot of memories here in U.K
Best Wishes
Derek
She looks so much better in this paint scheme than the black she is now.
We wish mainline steam excursion operations will just be back to life in the future!
I like how 4501 is powerful enough to only need 1 diesel for assitance.
Some steam trains don’t have any diesel locomotives
Just to assist in braking

Love to see a OHCR 1551/SOU 630/4501 tripleheader steam excursion on Norfolk Southern rails in the future.
For 1992 that’s good quality
Yeah, you got to love the the smooth fps and not the 12 fps like they use in the Spiderverse movies lol!😂
when i was younger i would fall asleep to the sound of 4501's whistle that was playing on a 4 hour vhs video i had, sadly the video finally went kaput, but it was a good time.
Gotta love NS, making CSX look like a horse's ass one steam engine at a time.
If they (CSX) would only take more of the initiative to restore ACL#1504 beyond being a pretty painted lady. She's Too Good an engine to just sit in a back parking lot like some statue.
I think it's Horse Shit that CSX don't allow Steam on their Railroad so, they won't even bother with C&O 614.
Some good stuff ! thanks for the look at it
Good video of 4501.
She'll be running this summer
Could you imagine that the 4501 might run on the UP and BNSF rails in the western states of America? That might be a great thought about it!
4501 reminds me so much of Gordon the Big engine but the locomotive has Henry's painting.

Have a large numbered photo of this 4501 coming around the bend on the L&N line just before Normandy, Tn.

Bacc in black
4:41 you spin
@TheRailbaron you're thinking of #1401, a Ps4 Pacific. It's easy to get the two confused.
I think they should have kept the green color on the engine.
It's more accurate to have a black scheme.
@@rafe5556 Who cares, the green looked great, black looks like shit
Lmao
Yea but the only have the black one tho
@PRL2204 Triple Crown always has the ride away and moves at what ever the top speed is allowed on the line!!! They always come flying through when i see them!!!

Me encanta I like trains.
Our Hopes are Fall of 2009 or Spring of 2010.
If they were being historically accurate, they keep it black. When #4501 was in revenue service, she ran as a freight engine.
nice good thick black smoke show that it has power
Holy crap how fast was that NS freight train at 5:00 going?! like 70 or somethin?
Now we all know that the 4501 is being restored and should be back into excursions in the next year or so, but the burning question in my mind is will they keep it Freight train black or will they put it back into the Passenger train green that made this engine so famous?

wasn't this the locomotive in Johnny Cash's misc video "hurt"?
Back when the engineer let the whistle sing
My neighbors grandpa ran that literally
@dwtrainman I wouldn't say rule, more like be allowed to ride, but it's probably just for publicity as far as NS is concerned.
4501 has a sort of weird whistle doesn't it? Kind of actually sounds like it saying "woooooo woooooo", lol, pretty train though.
611 more likely then 1218, the 611 and 1218 are owned by the city, not the museum, so the city would have to restore it, and the 611 will be about 1 million. the 1218 has a cracked frame, so that will be very costly.
Keystone Productions So we make a Fire Up 1218 and raise money, use funds from 611, get the city to move it down to South Carolina, and restore her.

Seems like they (NS) do that with anything with the work 'steam' in it...look at 611...
but there is hope for the future!

what year will 630 run? because i heard she may operate this year or march of 2010.
@DJGENEX71 steam will rule the southern rails again
do they still run excursions through muncie?
isn't that the 1218's tender?
Aux tender?
@InvisibleSkyDaddy ns gp38-2, ex-southern high nose
@InvisibleSkyDaddy Its a GP.
Almost true. The only way the 611 or 1218 will ever run again is if the VMT gets ALOT of funding or someone takes on the project. And with the current state the A is in, I would bet against seeing it run again.
Isso é cuidar bem da ferrovia e de suas máquinas.Que deveria servir de exemplo pro nosso pais que não cuida de nada.
Isn't #4501 stuck in the Smithsonian's basement?
If they really wanted to be authentic they'd put a smoke deflector back on it like it used on the old "CNO&TP rat hole" line through Kentucky and Tennessee .
yeah, that's what l thought
BRO why did they repaint 4501 it looked better in green
to keep it better and its historical original color
good news, NS is restarting there steam program, 1st teh 630, then 4501, then 611 and finnaly the last 2-6-6-4 in existance
the 611 will probably come back the A not so much. They killed the A the J is still mostly intact
