During the peak of his career, Kane was the man. He Revolutinised the whole Rap game in the late 80's. He had more female fans than a top RnB singer, and he appealed to the hardcore thugs as well.
Jay Z may have the money, but Kane had the RESPECT!!!

  • @passion4posh

You heard a lisp ? It may sound funny today because he's not a studio gangster perpetrating, advocating violence, misogynistic lyrics or marketing negative image. Listen to what he's saying not how hes saying it .That is straight knowledge, respect for oneself, his people and his craft.

  • @Mikelovision

The record labels aren't trying to "separate rap from it's culture." All they care about is money. If it makes money, they will sell it. The hip-hop culture sells. You see people from different countries dressing in the hip-hop apparel and using the slang words. My point is this quote from Grandmaster Caz, "Hip-hop didn't invent ANYTHING. It REINVENTED everything." Rap music is a part of the hip-hop culture so wherever hip-hop moves, rap moves.

It's very accurate my friend. Yes you are right in mentioning Adele, as she has broken numerous records that stood for the past 25 years and over.
Collectively as a music genre, RAP sells more than any other music genre and this includes Country, RocknRoll and RnB.
So even if Adele (Pop) sold 14Million as a solo ARTIST and Pop sold collectively 200M, RAP would've have topped the 200M mark of sales achieved by that of Pop!!!!!
This is a fact my friend, you should know this already!!

I was actually saying da same thing back in 1987/88 till I heard "Set It Off" from BDK. I even stoped listening 2 rap for 2 yrs till I heard BDK.
He re-revolutionised da art of rap, he even caught da attention of other music genres etc, reggae ppl who would hear him spit a verse & say "Ah wod d bomber clart"!
Moreover, his early shit was not just hardcore, but strictly underground. Rappers didn't give a shit about going platinum then, it was about da respect on da mic not da paper off it!!

Mike, you talk sense, your points are valid. When I refer to 150 Rappers to 1 Singer, I'm not making comparisons of 10-20 years ago. It is not really appropriate to make that comparison of Motown with rappers. Rap has been around since 75'. Motown over 25 years prior to that!
The art of rap is to spit your own material, freestyle from the top and flow with it. A singer can have the best voice, but can't write a writer the worst voice but best songs. Both combined by 1, makes u an artist!!!

The best way to look at this situation, is you can have Rap Artists that go multi-platinum across 10 states without having to sell outside of the USA. Too $hort was a classic example, when he went tripple platinum in the 90's and sold less than 20 records in the UK.
For every Adele Singer, their are 150 Rappers. Not all singers write their own material like most rappers do. This factor would be the reason the rap genre out selling all the others.

Listen, I'm from Cali and my mother and father are from the bronx. I've studied and heard first hand about the begging of the hip-hop culture which started either late 1971 or early 1972 (kool herc said that). Rap an art form of hip-hop just like B-boy dancing and Graffiti is, too. Now that is explained, it happened to all art forms created by minorities. Electro, house, dubstep, does borrow from hip hop but it also borrows from disco, funk, and reggae which hip hop borrows from, too. (cont)
