◆ 다시 태어나면 꽃으로
1943년 태평양 전쟁 때 일본군에 끌려가 위안부 생활을 해야 했던 열여섯 살의 소녀가 있었다. 하얀 저고리에 검정 치마를 입고 떠난 소녀는 그렇게 무작정 끌려갔고, 눈을 떠보니 주위엔 총칼을 가진 일본군들뿐이었다. 악몽 같은 3년의 시간이 지나자 전쟁은 끝이 났다. 열아홉이 된 소녀는 멍투성이의 몸과 마음으로 고향인 대구에 돌아왔지만 함께 끌려갔던 친구는 생사를 알 수 없었고, 부모님은 매일 같이 소녀 앞에서 울기만 했다. 그 길로 집을 나선 소녀는 어느 한 곳 마음 둘 곳을 찾지 못해 발바닥에 피가 날 정도로 전국을 떠돌았다. 그러다 겨우 마음을 의지한 곳이 속리산 자락이다. 소녀는 거기서 피지 못한 꽃으로 할머니가 되었다.
◆ 까칠하고 당당한 할머니의 호통.. 그리고 눈물
이옥선 할머니(86, 보은군 속리산면 사내리)의 별명은 태극기 할머니다. 20년 넘게 집 앞에 태극기를 걸었기 때문인데.... 요즘은 할머니의 집에 태극기가 걸리지 않는다. 거동이 불편하게 돼 혼자 힘으로는 더 이상 태극기를 걸 수 없게 된 것.
"태극기 다는 거 내가 첨 시작했는데 이젠 유행이 됐어.. 그러니 이제 난 안 걸어도 되지..”
그래도 아픈 다리가 낫게 되면 다시 태극기를 걸고 싶다는 할머니. 내 집 마당에 펄럭이는 태극기를 보면서 위안부 생활의 공포를 떨칠 수 있었다는 할머니는 생지옥 같던 과거의 이야기를 열어 보이는데... 우리가 몰랐던, 때로는 알려하지 않았던 그 이야기, 세상에 대한 호통 같기도 하고 눈물 같기도 한 할머니의 이야기를 언제까지 들을 수 있을까? 가끔은 불같은 성격에 거침없는 입담. 그러면서도 수줍은 미소를 보여주는 이옥선 할머니. 잘 웃고 화도 잘 내는 할머니의 가슴속으로 들어가 그녀의 진짜 모습을 만나본다.
◆ 가끔은 유쾌 상쾌한 태극기 할머니의 1000일 기도
위안부 생활 이후 사람을 믿지 않게 된 할머니. 누구에게도 짐이 되기 싫었던 여인.
그녀는 지금 속리산 자락에 기대어 보살 같은 ‘이웃 할마시(?)’들과 알콩달콩 겨울날을 보낸다. 그러나 그런 일상 속에서도 가장 중요한 것은 매일 같이 법주사의 미륵부처님을 찾는 일. 눈이 오고 비가 와도 하루도 거르지 않은 할머니의 기도는 곧 꽉 찬 3년, 1000일을 맞는다.
일본의 어떤 보상보다 진심의 사죄를 원하는 이옥순 할머니. 자신의 상처를 넘어 다시는 자신과 같은 피해자가 없기를 바라는 할머니의 소망은 늙지 않고 날마다 새로워진다.
