  • First Look: Mutt Motorcycles Stravaig 400 4K
    I visited Mutt Motorcycles HQ in Birmingham, UK to take a look at their new adventure bike. Mutt are better known for their 125 and 250cc retro scrambler style bikes and this is a first foray into the Adventure market. (See my other video form their stand at EICMA 2022 for the full range)
    This video is my first look at the new Mutt Motorcycles Stravaig 400 Adventure bike. It's a 401cc parallel twin that makes around 36hp, with an 81cm seat height and weighs 215kg. It comes with tubeless wheels, a TPMS system, adjustable screen, LED lights, USD forks, 12V and USB socket, and ABS on the twin disc at the front and single disc to the rear.
    It is very reasonably priced at just under £5000 (as of September 2024). The luggage is extra, 2x28L side cases and a 40L top case for an additional £375 for those that need it.
    Full details of the bike are on the Mutt Motorcycles website:
    muttmotorcycle...
    A first ride video will follow. For now, this is a close look at the bike itself.
    Please note that this is a pre-production prototype, the final production versions will be coming in a couple of weeks. They will essentially be the same but with a proper coated finish on the body parts (they are painted on this bike), black levers and a TFT dash.
    Thanks for watching

      It is, but then Adventure bikes seem to be the thing that sells so I expect it makes sense for the brand. (I would like to go back and try one of the 250’s though. Perhaps another day when I have more time.)

    A re worked Sinnis 380 is no match for a 411 Himalayan.
    I would prefer the Indian two wheels you can still pick up brand new for the same money or less. Or a second hand Himmy with a few hundred miles on the clock.
    Does the same thing and has proven itself.

      I’ve ridden both and I’m not sure I agree. There is a charm to the chugging of the 411 but the road smoothness and top end power of the Mutt makes it a more sensible high speed road bike.

    • @PeakMotorcycles
      @PeakMotorcycles  15 дней назад +1

      Good point. That's an extra £29/year vs a 400. Though I guess that's perhaps 1 tank of fuel so maybe not a deal breaker. I had a look at what's just under, and I think that'd be something like the Sinnis Terrain 380 also a twin but 378cc and makes the same 36bhp and similar torque, though at slightly higher revs. It also costs £500 less, but the seat is 1cm higher, fuel tank is 1L smaller, doesn't have the tubeless wheels, TFT dash, LED lights or TPMS. None of these are deal breakers, and I guess some will choose the Mutt for the extra £500 for these bits, even with the higher RFL.

      Not sure. Is the T380 based on a Zongshen Cyclone RX401? If so it might be, but there’s quite a few small differences so might be different. I think there is a Euro5 T380 though? Not sure if this is the Euro 5+ variant, but I think this may be an evolution. Do you have a T380 in the collection?

    • @nathanthepostman
      @nathanthepostman 15 дней назад +1

      I think the rx401 is an evolution of the RX4 which was the sinnis T380 rebadged (I believe). I did ride one. It was very low geared and all in all pretty average. I wouldn't have bought one and it was discontinued pretty quickly. Hopefully this mutt rendition is significantly improved. Needs to be.@@PeakMotorcycles

      Hi, I haven't tried, but the pillion seat seems a good size and the pegs with the rubber inserts are a nice touch. I think the power will always be limited, and the luggage space is also a consideration. I'd say to test ride one if you can and make a judgement if it works for you. For highway use, 2-up, I think it'll be limited. It might make the speed limit, (and probably will) but it's not the ideal bike for that, for lower speed touring, perhaps to 100km/h or 60mph, I don't see why you couldn't.

      Yup, light it is not, but then they have to design, build, ship and make a profit for what is £4160 before VAT. Light costs, and I doubt you’d get a bike at this price point that does that as well. The RE 350 Meteor is cheaper and a little lighter, but it has half the power. I guess if you’re coming off a big bike, this is a big contrast, but having said that, I’ve ridden it and it gets up to 70mph well enough. If coming from a 125, it’ll feel like a rocket. For a few days at that 🤣

    They badly need to redesign this, it already looks like a twenty year old bike. The colour, the 'bodywork' all look so 2000.
    Then there is the need for a crashbar: the waterpump sticks out too far, one slide over the street and you'll be stuck for two weeks....

    • @PeakMotorcycles
      @PeakMotorcycles  15 дней назад

      Given the popularity of retro bikes, is that a positive or a negative?! As for the crashbar, I’m not sure where the contact points are but I’m sure there will be options for that. I know plenty of folks who love Honda’s 300L which comes with no crash protection (and the radiator does burst on impact) and looks like a 30 year old trail bike, including the halogen headlight and large orange indicators. They can’t make enough of them, so perhaps that’s no bad thing.

  • @Hutchie2112

    215kg is too heavy. I was quite interested until I saw the weight in the description. Thats more than my T7 , but with half the power.

    • @PeakMotorcycles
      @PeakMotorcycles  15 дней назад

      Yup, makes sense, though I don't think this is competing with the T7. A T7 with a few options (Centre stand, led indicators, and a 12V outlet) is over £11,200. And while the Mutt is 10Kg heavier, that's with the centre stand which I guess would add 3-4Kg to the T7. Also the Mutt has a bigger fuel tank by 3L so the wet weight probably includes another 2-3Kg of fuel. You are right that it's still heavier, but it's more than £6000 more, for a weight saving of 6Kg, or £1000/kg. I know this is a slightly silly example, as the T7 is a class above in terms of what it'll do, but I think the weights are comparable. It does have half the power, costs less than half as much, so I guess the Mutt will appeal to those who don't need the extra 36hp and would rather spend £5k instead of £11k on a bike.

    Off the shelf Chinese engine with parts bin plastics bolted on, the weight of a 900cc bike with a 400cc engine and five grand. If you filled up that luggage and got a pillion on the back it wouldn’t pull the skin off a rice pudding. It doesn’t even look nice. So many better bikes in this segment. Well done for picking something different but no thanks.

    • @PeakMotorcycles
      @PeakMotorcycles  15 дней назад

      May I ask what your choice would be in the segment? It is heavy, but I rode the RE Meteor 350 which is 15kg lighter but with half the power and it was great fun. It did feel more like a canal boat than a power boat though both are fun to drive, but the enjoyment comes in different ways. I've done a fair bit of riding in Colombia recently on 200cc 16hp 140kg bikes that are almost the fastest things on the road. Many people do just fine with more weight and less power, but it's all relative and down to expectations. As for others in this segment, I guess the obvious comparison is the old Himalayan 411. That's a 200kg bike with 15L of fuel vs 215kg of the Mutt with 19L, so perhaps 10kg or so in it. Except the Himmy makes 24hp to the 36hp of the Mutt. I've seen plenty of Himalayans around 2-up with 1/3 less power. Fast they are not, but skin off a rice pudding they can manage, and I would expect this would do the same, only faster. It's not for everyone, but neither was the Himalayan and in a world where the old 500's became 600's, 750's and now 800's and 900's and the litre bikes became 1100's, 1200's and 1300's all while the price of a middleweight adventure bike often topples £15k and a big bike £25k, having some of these bikes coming in above the 125's, but below the 500's is great to see. It's probably not a bike I'd own either, but then I already have a 411 Scram, a CRF300, a CT125, a Kove 450 and a 450MT on the way, so my garage is full.

    • @MH-xd2nd
      @MH-xd2nd 15 дней назад +1

      Yes but RE replaced the Himmi with a bike that has nearly double the power so clearly they realised people will only buy under-powered ‘50s technology at modern prices for so long. Such bikes do work in other parts of the world but they’re much, much cheaper there and generally incomes are far lower - otherwise people would probably get a car instead, unless it’s rough terrain with no roads. You cannot escape the fact that this is a rebadged Chinese engine that itself was a copy of something else, with fairly bland and anonymous adv bike Mutt styling applied, at pretty much big brand pricing. Looking at their website this seems to be their thing. All power to them but I wonder how many bikes they actually sell.

    • @PeakMotorcycles

      @@MH-xd2nd do you have a preferred bike in this segment? And yes, the new Himi is a modern bike, but it doesn’t do it for me I’m afraid. Each to their own though. I expect they’ll keep selling the old one where they can where they don’t need to adapt for EU5+. May I ask if you also consider the KTM 790 and 890 and the BMW parallel twins rebadged Chinese engines? I think they are made by CFMoto and Loncin respectively.
