THE 'MOST DANGEROUS CITY’ IN SASKATCHEWAN | North Battleford's Dark History

- North Battleford has been labelled as the 'most dangerous city in Saskatchewan' and even the 'most dangerous city in Canada' in past years. What is it about this small city that has pushed high rates of substance abuse, property crime and violence? In this video I will share with you some of the dark history of the cities beginnings during the colonial start of Canada, as well as taking a general tour around the city showing you the downtown core, trying a local restaurant and checking out some of its top attractions. If you have lived in or been to North Battleford, I would love to know your thoughts in the comments!

It’s been a year and 2 months for me in Saskatoon and I have never been out of the city probably because I lack good friends. Friends at work are always busy with other jobs if not there. I am 31 and I have been thinking of going out of the city to try a new place but since I lack information on the towns nearby and a company I just ignore it most of the time and choose to stay home instead on my day offs. I recently found out about your channel and it’s actually quite informative on this provinces and those real talk videos are simply amazing. Thanks for being here alina
It is such a trip to see my usual views, and even my actual backyard, on a RUclips video outside of the news! Born and raised. Thank you for taking the time to explore and educate on what NB is really all about ❤ of course there is crime and trouble everywhere, but the history is really important I think on how we got to where we are. In the most recent years it has been wonderful to see a lot of my generation come back and work towards revitalizing the city and opening a ton of small businesses and really create a community again. Cafe4U is forever the best, the staff and their energy truly makes it so special, I’m glad you enjoyed!
Glad you liked the video! Yeah there’s definitely an awesome revitalization happening in North Battleford with business owners opening up some great places and more people moving in. Hope it continues!
I know a few North American cities that would envy the "problems of North Battleford" Where plywood replaces glass after too many breakins. Near my house a window was smashed to steal an ATM.
Well Explained. Good video.
I just visited there [from San Francisco] for a few hours one day last month. My biological maternal grandmother had a nervous breakdown in 1934 and spent the next 40+ years in the Saskatchewan Hospital, a long standing psychiatric facility. I visited her grave at the local cemetery.
Tragic, they put people in there for very little reasons
@@StoneUFO I've seen "nervous breakdowns" but even today it's not even recognized as an illness by an Psychiatry.
What a small world. I used to work as a nurse in San Francisco, and now work as a nurse at Saskatchewan Hospital. 😊
I won’t expect Saskatchewan is so quite. Thanks a lot of giving a glimpse of the Prairie provinces.
My pleasure! It’s definitely a quiet place when you get into the small towns 😅
@@AlinaMcleod Some of those small towns are my favorites.
Be interesting if someone visited the Northwest Territories.
Your dad is not just a pretty face; he is a smart guy too. Stay with the positive things. Don't let the downers dictate your content.
lol he isn’t just a pretty face is right!
@@AlinaMcleod🤨
Sad how fast Canada has imploded with drugs and crime everywhere.😢 I cant go back.
@@AlinaMcleod He is Beautiful inside & Lighthearted Person💕
Wonderful to see you both lots of love from Montreal
So great to see your Dad again. You two are the perfect team.❤️❤️
💡👍Brilliant !!
Having your dad on your videos that much better.
Both the dad and the mom.
Great to see you both ❤ you and your dad
I hope I can see your Mom as well. You know what I mean. 😀
@@jasonji6204 Alina did have a couple of recent videos with her mother. In Alberta, if I remember right.
You dad is such a kind soul!! Much love!!
Been here since 1973 it's a good place to live, good video *****
I realized that your mom and dad are divorced, but it’s so nice to see how you spend time with one and the other and make videos with them❤
Yeah I try to spend a good amount of time visiting both 😊
Every time I drive through South and North Battleford, I always admire the region, how beautiful this part of the province!
It is Battleford and North Battleford….not South
Great vid my mom is 97 she remembers those day on the prairies🇨🇦👍💪
Your dad is a gem, great video as always. Thanks for the decent Saskatchewan rep.
Amazing trip back in time, thanks !
Hi. Alina and good to see your dad. Strong and healthy. Great video and fun. I'm admired your remarkable experienced for travel recently. Thanks
Awesome to see a fellow Saskatchewan RUclipsr! Not many of us out here in this vlogger world :)
Wow! I have been living here for more than a year. Now I'm moving to London, UK
How did you find it?
Love seeing you guys hangout together. Especially in the prairies/ SK
Thanks for sharing I grew up in Maidstone 55 miles west but moved to Alberta 40 years ago still love the Riders
Thank you Alina for sharing more of beautiful Saskatchewan together with your dad. I really enjoyed his input together with your informative sightseeing. Cheers from a former Saskatchewaner.
I loved your presentation from a first person point of view. Your Dad seems like a great guy and a good companion to have on your field trips.
Thank you so much 😊
Love your videos of Sask towns.... And your dad!
Always enjoyable. Loved your Dad Comment, I Seen Both. Ya'll be Safe.🙏✌️😎
I left Canada 3 years ago, and moved overseas. Im so glad I did, but sometimes I miss it.
I don't miss it. It's been 10 years when I visited there last. I've lost all the desire after learning how Trudeau has destroyed the country.
What is it that you miss ??
If you don’t mind my asking.
@CallosZthenos I miss only needing to speak in English. I miss many good paying jobs that allow you to easily provide for a family. Now with skyrocketing prices in Canada too, many people are struggling. Some are homeless because their jobs do not pay enough to rent even a small apartment.
@@hahasleepyjokelostforever3797 So sad. Where are you? Did you hear Alina js moving out of Canada?
Your dad is a very knowledgeable man . Great outlook on life as well . Thank you for the great video . The news paints many negative pictures of our towns .
Nice! I am researching things and news about North Battleford, Got a job and we weill be moving there on 2 weeks. Your video gave a lot of peace of mind to our decision moving there. Thanks A lot!
Welcome. Hope it treats you well.
Very interesting look into a lesser known part of Canada, Alina. Definitely had good smooth editing too it, kept me riveted all the way through. It makes me so nostalgic seeing all of the old museum artifacts. Thanks for incorporating so much history as well. 💙💛🤍
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Alina. I follow you after the "incident" in Colombia. You are very nice and clever. And your videos are very rich in content. And your father is a real Philosophy Doctor. It remembers my Grandfather.
Funny. I thought of her in Colombia when the word "danger" was spoken. I was SHOCKED she traveled Colombia alone. My conviction is ANY PLACE is safe relative to Venezuela and Colombia.
Your channel! Your content!! And, I’ve enjoyed it all.
Another great video, it's always such a pleasure to watch your content, you and your dad, you both are fantastic. Love to see your dad, such an amazing guy! ❤❤
Thanks so much!
@@AlinaMcleod Nice equation Alina and Gordon have. Their travels in SE Asia were fascinating.
Thanks Alina for that wonderful video with your dad alway goo to see you two.
Gordon is a funny guy.
ah great video Alina and your Dad, Thanks for making it. I gotta get back to Saskatchewan
very nice introduction about this city. when we went to skid at table mountain, we saw this city on the cliff, we thought it should be a city worthy to visit, thks for your video.
Harriet and I have never been. It sound like any small town here where we live in Virgina. Your dad misses those old days of simplicity . We kind of do too. A great video of a slice of life in
a small town that we don't get to see outside our own. The only downer is the weather. Harriet and I like warm places. But if you can get past that . You could live there fairly comfortably .
Hope you guys are doing ok. Sending much love❤❤❤ from Harriet, Jim and Yuki
Yeah the weather is definitely the biggest issue!
great video , i been in north batleford in 1989 ,just passing for edmonton . to sleep for the ride ,but ''ve no trime to explore . i' french from quebec but love the mid west ever seen ! hope to get back in soon ! i love it !
The Western Development museums in Saskatchewan are a gem. Love them. I've visited all four, some more than once, during family visits in Saskatchewan.
Nice job to you both
Very informative video, lovely museum and places, and loved the small town feel. Would like to visit someday. Thanks Alina and dad for sharing :)
Hi Alina,
I am so glad you both survived this dangerous environment.
🙂
The museum really is interesting.
Best regards, Ralf
This was so informative, especially as we moving back to Canada from a quiet place in New Zealand. I would think that moving to a little town like this, would lessen the reverse culture shock
Just found your channel, I really enjoyed the video! Great work!
Been living in Battleford for a year, appreciate your open mind and helping others see some of the nice things around the area. I enjoy being closer to nature, and the ppl here are so kind and down to Earth. Unfortunately all the gang activity, rampant drugs and alcohol abuse really does feel more impactful because it is such a small area.
My grandparents grew up in Saskatchewan. Grandfather was a Canadian WW2 vet, and came back to Canada with a new wife from Wales, they got a quarter section of land and didn't pay much for it. My grandma was not a fan of Saskatchewan winters. I got a lot of "uphill both ways" stories from my dad about farming in the 1940s and 1950s. I sometimes reflect on how technology changed more during my grandmother's lifetime than it did for the 2000 years prior. It's cool seeing the historical pieces from Saskatchewan because it reminds me of that family history.
I knew and worked with all four of my homestead grandparents. Cousins were HAND MILKING in 1963 when I did a year in the rural school my parent went to, then on to Los Angeles. Make homesteading available again: no land cost.
Hi Alina😊 I'm so glad to see your DAD!!😎God keep you & Dad always Healthy fit💪💕❤
Alina, I NEVER comment on videos but I'm a long time subscriber from the UK. I've traced my Ukrainian relatives to being immigrants to North Battleford in the late 1800s. Thank you for the new perspective on history and showing us around town ♥ ♥
Do you have any info on them? There is a lot of local history books that might help you out.
Your Dad is an awesome cohost!
This is regarding a prior video … you were in I think Columbia, and there was a beautiful walk by a highway and you could see beautiful view of mountains, water, etc., but you were the only one on there. It looked like a spectacular walk, and I would have taken it too! I am so glad you did what you did, running past the man and to the bus stop. My heart would have pounding . I’m glad you were OK! I think your guardian Angel was by your side!!! 😇
Yeah I was very lucky to get out of that situation like I did.
Amazing video, alina 😊
Have enjoyed your channel for a while! Would you ever consider doing an Australia series? Lots to see - perfect place to escape the Canadian winter too - you’d love it I’m sure!
Thank you! I was actually in Australia for a whole month when I was 18, wish I would have had my channel then. Will definitely visit again in the future!
Thank you very much Alina and dad for this informative video which is really interesting. 🍀🌻🍀🪻
Really like your father 😊 He reminds me of my maternal grandfather, he always tells me stories about when he was a kid and life was simpler 😌
I might be close to Gordon's age. I'd call it simpler, too. Tech has really taken over. We had no social media so if there was division, it didn't get splashed all over.
Very well, done. Thank you.
Great you respect your mom and dad and do vlog with them.
She might be in a very small group of content creators with the family component. Many give the impression they are orphans.
Great video ❤❤❤
Dad is a stud, I don’t think it will be unsafe for him anywhere. Nice to see the prairies on RUclips, quite a rare occurrence. Stay well Alina!
Thank you very much!
So interesting. Thanks Alina. 👍😊🇮🇪💙🇨🇦
I'm originally from central SK and have never been in the Battlefords. With all the hype about how dangerous North Battleford it, this video is very informative to the contrary. Nice town and I love the surrounding scenery - beautiful.
North Battleford should pick a line from a Doors song to be their monicker " Five to one baby, one in five, no one here gets ...out alive. You get yours , I get mine...gonna make it...if we try..." Remember when that farmer had to shoot that native kid who came to rob his farm with his posse, and he had a gun? Well, that's the North Battleford area. Full of natives, full of crime. These two only saw it in the day time, when the natives are sleeping it off, they should go there on a Friday night at about 11:00 pm. with a pack of smokes sticking out of their pocket. It would be like chumming for sharks!
Tks for the Geography/History lesson.
I passed North Battleford many times and wondered what the building is.
Last month, my son and I went to the giant water tower and took a picture. It was amazing.
Now we are in China to see our family.
I’m moving in a few days for work. I’m so nervous. Thanks for the video
Why are you nervous? Lol me too, but I’m not bothered at all
It is a nice museum, and pretty town. My first job was there and I worked 29 hours a week and commuted back to Saskatoon to finish a Commerce degree. Later in life took a Min to the WDM as the backdrop for signing to settle a claim with the local indigenous communities. Many a coffee run for fun from Saskatoon to North Battleford in my young adulthood and enjoyed opening up the V8 Mustang just a wee bit back in 1989! Thanks for the RUclips video.
the beaver bar and grill has the BEST PHO! amazing food
Nice to have you back in Saskatchan Alina. Great job! Your dad is amazing.
Thank you 😊
Great video with Alina's dad. Please say hello to your dad. 13:20 his eyes! Great soul.
I lived in NB for a year and spent a ton of time outside, after midnight. You have to be looking for trouble to find it, or causing trouble to find it. The stats are overblown.
I lived within eyesight of the hospital, if people question if I was in some isolated corner of the city.
Good job to you and your dad ❤
Thank you!
Hopefully one day you guys come up further north and see the beautiful senary up here say hi to gordie magew
I am from Saskatoon, but moved to Penticton 3 years ago, this video made me homesick for Saskatchewan. I could never move back, the winters are pure hell, we spend half the year in Hua Hin Thailand, and Penticton, but we plan to move to Thailand, this video was completely different than your normal exotic location video, I liked it. Your father is very sweet, typical Sask farmer type, very cute
It is certainly very hard to go back to SK winters after SEA winters lol
Yes, and its far safer overseas than anywhee in Canada.
@@stevan2399 20 different trips to Thailand and never had a single issue with crime, Thailand is very safe. Canada not anymore
The winters make you tough and appreciate the other three seasons all that much more. And if it’s not a cold snap, there’s tons to do. I’m a 3rd generation Saskatchewan farmer and wouldn’t trade my life or my home for anything in the world.
@@oilersridersbluejays that's wonderful, we are all different, I have no desire to ever return to Saskatchewan, I am also 3rd generation, grandparents were farmers in Kerrobert area, father taught at the UofS for 30 years, none of my family lives anywheres near Saskatchewan anymore, we all find the cold winters to be to much for us. Thailand every winter for the past 24 years, planning to move within the next year, can't wait!!!
really nice enjoyable video
Fellow RUclips content creator in Saskatchewan! Subbed! Sask creators unite haha. The pas Manitoba and Prince Albert are pretty bad too
WELL EXPLAINED, KEEP GOING,
If you ever go back and The Beaver Grill is still open, they make the best pad Thai I've ever had. It may sound silly, but her pad Thai is one of the things I miss most about North Battleford. They operate out of the top floor of the curling rink in that large community centre.
Nice video nice to seeing you and your father
My mother is from a farm near St. Walburg. Her first job was at the Royal Bank in North Battleford in 1957.
Great vid….Thanks 👍
Great video with complete information. Please make a video on Lathbridge city of Alberta Canada. Thanks 🙏. This is INDERJEET SINGH from Delhi.
Lathbridge of Alberta is a shithole now. They used to roll up the sidewalks at 6pm but is now full of homeless bums and drugged up indians. If i was you i would stay in delhi. Much warmer and not so windy.
Nice video😊
I used to work as a courier to NB off and on for about 5 years, and I have never seen 101st so devoid of traffic!
yes, devoid of traffic and where did all the homeless people go? Seems very odd that not one homeless person was on the streets. BTW, the homeless are why there are not many businesses downtown. I'm a bit amazed that you reported on a town and never spoke to one person in that town. You may have heard things like a friend of mine having her cucumbers ripped out of the ground by a meth head a couple of days ago, or the guy who was at the bar and went outside for a smoke only to have his arm cut right off below the shoulder by someone who was being initiated into a gang, maybe the older couple who was approached by 3 people when they stopped at a red light, the guy had a sawed off shot gun and the two girls had machetes, thankfully only stole their vehicle and left them unharmed.... these occurrences don't make it onto the news though. You really cant report on a town without speaking to the people.
Hi Alina.. I spent a week there doing signage for carousel bingo. Didn’t seem like a dangerous place. Thanks for the tour.
Loved this video. I’ve lived in North Beautiful since 1987 and I love it here. Very friendly where everyone knows each other. Great place to do business and an amazing golf course North Battleford Golf & Country Club is a gem. Your dad is awesome, reminds me so much of my dad.
Cool video,nb deff has some rougher spots with alotta crime etc, but ain't got nothing on pa
Alina, I love Ukrainians I keep praying for everyone during these terrible days.
Thank you very much
Went to St. Thomas College. Worked at both Safeway’s. It was a great place to grow up. The curfew siren went off at 9:30 p.m. and everything was safe. We need to bring back those sirens and enforce them.😊
Hi dad and Alina great job always 😊❤🎉😮
Thank you! 🤗
I too lived through those times but everyone was very happy and we just didn’t miss what we didn’t have.
I've been to "The Battlefords" a few times.
I have some family history there going back to the 1800's.
I recently research the "most dangerous" city claims.
Those statistics are per capita and come directly from the RCMP themselves. Mostly GANG and Domestic violence.
I noticed you left out the city's historic mental assylum.
Very good video overall 🙂
Good to see your Dad again 🙂
👍
Oh really? I didn't know they had one there!
My paternal grandparents lived in north battleford, then moved to Vancouver. My dad was born in north battleford. My great grandparents lived in Vawn, a town that no longer exists.
i love learning about saskatchewan, so i'm really appreciative of such informative videos! how was the weather there in terms of heat this time of year?
The weather this time of year is as good as it gets lol about 25-30C.
Anyone coming to NB if your only gonna be here for a couple days visit the Pool / Field house next to the Walmart or go to Jackfish Lake
My wife and I started our life together there as a couple in 1978 . I worked for a home manufacturing business called Design-X building owned by the Mahar family plus partners . We explored the province from small rodeo's to Lois Reil Days in Saskatoon and the RCMP school in the south . This was a good video your roots come through as a Saskatchewan girl , your Dad a cool guy too
I'd like your opinions on other surrounding areas like Watrous and Martensville for example. I really like the sound of many places in Saskatchewan. I live in the UK but would love to visit.
Hi Alina
I have lived in the battlefords most of my life. It is crazy to hear our city as Crime Town. One thing people need to realize its like any other city. If you are involved with the bad stuff, you are going to end up a statistic. We do have alot of gangs. I can walk anywhere in the city and feel safe.
I forget where you are from but my Dad came from a barely there village called Riverhurst down Highway 4 and then towards Lake Diefenbaker. His parents came from Scotland in the early 1910's and received the proverbial parcel of land. It was a hard life being farmers. Your Dad is awesome and you speak just like him 😀. Great video............
Thank you! My Dad grew up in Kinistino.
Keep safe always!
11:59 was the “eh” we were all waiting for 😊
lol
Alina and Gordon: My mother spent her early years in rural North Dakota. Everything Gordon says about his early years is VERY true to my mother's early years. No indoor plumbing. One room with heat in the whole house. No chamber pot t hat I heard of. He says annual income $1000. Same number for my mother. The "family car" was a donation from my grandfather's parishioners. Plus he had two Morgans and a carriage. My mother drove a Model T when she was 11 years old. Better time? I'm skeptical. After marriage my mother accepted abuse that might have seemed mild compared to childhood. I'm so glad Gordon has his upbeat attitude. Great dad!
I just spent 2 days in Saskatoon recently and loved it. I was staying by the river, beautiful area. PA is pretty sketchy. lol
Im from Flin Flon Manitoba, now living in Mexico 🇲🇽 cheers. ✌🏼
Very beautiful part of the province to visit. I wouldn't want to live there unless it was full of people like your dad.
Awesome commentary.
If your dad isn't 80 or 90 I'm pretty sure running water / sewer was a thing in most towns. I'm getting my plumbing 4:47 installed this week. 🙂
He didn't live in a town, he lived out on a farm growing up :) And he is almost 80!
Could you do an episode dedicated to the harvest and all the agricultural machines and all the good stuff?
