- Tumultuous doesn't begin to describe the state of the automobile industry during the 1970s in America. By the end of the decade, the oil crisis was in full swing, and gas prices took a trip to the moon.
Despite this bleak era of automobile history, some car companies churned out some head-turners that catered to more well-off customers. In today's video, we gonna take a look at the 10 most expensive American cars of T
the 70s. Авто/Мото
It's pronounced "tor-oh-nah-doh". It's not a tornado in Kansas.
You said TORNADO
His pronunciation of this word really grated my nerves.
@@jacksonrileyjones mine too.
And Brougham is pronounced as 1 syllable "brohm" not bro-ham. Obviously this guy wasn't around in the 70s, he didn't even use the word malaise era.
AND ... it's not Lincoln Mark VEE, it's the Lincoln Mark FIVE! ("V" is a Roman numeral.) If you're going to do informative videos about these cars, you really should learn to pronounce their names.
Wow, you can tell this guy isn't a car person......
Obviously the "junkie" in his name is referring to something else.
He may be a car person, but he was clearly born long after the 70s and doesn't know how to pronounce the names.
Take cover! Here comes a tornado! Auntie Em! Auntie Em! ha ha ha ha - yes as mentioned - to-ruh-naa-doh
It's embarrassing. Besides the other mispronunciations here, he say Fay-tawn for Phaeton. It's Fay-uh-tun. Oy vey...
@@bluebox2000 He also can't pronounce Brougham properly.
The Mark V is pronounced Mark Five, it's the roman numeral being used.
And I had to laugh when he pronounced "Tornado" instead of "Tornahdo"
Also...did he imply that Chrysler and Buick were sister brands?
Is this dude Canadian? It’s Toronado, pronounced Tore Oh Nah Dough. 😂
Can you believe that guy!?
@@donnelson6285 I think so, he speaks in Liters, plus some of the pronunciations."abote $7000"
Oldsmobile Toronado not Oldsmobile tornado it’s not like tornado a weather storm .
At least he knew how to pronounce "New Yorker". Aside from that one, he pretty much fell flat on his face.
It is a Lincoln Mark 5. Not V. It’s Roman numerals.
Makes no sense calling it a Tornado!! No excuse!
I love those Cadillac Bro hams.
Wow this is the worst video ever. You would think he would do research since he can't read. Wonder how he feels reading all the comments!
I grew up in the 70s and I've now lived long enough to hear an Oldsmobile referred to as a weather event by a millennial.
Glad to see the top comment addresses the travesty of the pronunciation.
Would he really say "Lincoln Mark Vee Eye Eye Eye?"
I like how he pronounced the engine size of the Chrysler too. Five Point Seven Elle engine.
Hey look bro, Millennials stopped born on 1995, we are centennials
I was in high school in the 70s and had a high school colleague pronounce it that way when we were talking about and comparing cars.
Dude stutz was no diffrent than modified sema cars. This channel didnt said the truth
Whoever put this video together needs to do better research on cars.
Yes, this borders on parody.
Exactly... "Oldsmobile Tornado" 🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️
Or that the 78 Eldorado had a 5.7 mine has a 425 big block (7L) which was standard in those cars
This is 2021, homie.
Few people know what they're talking about but they still do
And english
A perspective of 70’s cars from a Millennial.
Hey, come on now. I knew how to pronounce the names of the cars when I was in grade school and this guy was in diapers
I was buying and driving these cars
Well-put.
Millenials were born in the 80s and 90s
These cars are not unfamiliar to them
mispronunciation of names, Tornado, Mark Vee......This video is a joke.
Wonder how he pronounces the Mark IV, Mark VIII and so on. 😂
Mark IV (eye vee) and Mark VIII (V plus 3 eyes)
@@roberteverett9579 , 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you! That and the "Tornado"!? I had to bail out lest he butcher another name.
@@roberteverett9579 hilarious
It’s an Oldsmobile Tor-o-nado NOT tornado. And the Lincoln is a Mark 5 (Roman numeral). Not Mark V.
I see I am not the only one who clearly noticed the mispronounced words of the classic automobile names.
possible robo reader?
that onw of the ways you can tell whoever did this does not know about these cars
God, hearing those felt like driving over speed bumps while suffering a bad case of hemorrhoids. Painful!
Yes, that's the state of affairs these days when someone does these videos without the proper knowledge. He also centers on the later '70s and missed some of the real luxo barges of the earlier years.
If you have never driven an American luxury car from the 1960's through 1970's, you don't know what luxury feels like.
I HAVE TO TRY ONE DAY, WIIL LOOK FOR RIDE HERE IN EUROPE
A very squishy suspension with steering that's about as responsive as the Titanic's.
What, so Bentley, rolls and Mercedes Benz just had no idea
You are a true......
Seen from Europe, the old days gas-guzzlers cars were not just cars, they were the symbol of the United States when it was still "America". Both these cars and the American dream have unfortunately shrunk since. The new "big cars" (SUV) are just big and ugly, they've lost elegance and style.
@@jfrancobelge As an American, I believe that America is long gone.
I'd take any one of these land yachts today. My best friend had a 79 Riviera and it's power windows were faster than any I have ever seen to this day. I loved how soft and comfortable the seats were in these 70s luxury cars.
Cool cars, but I'd rather have an early '70's Riv.
you should see how fast the passenger window is in a 70s kenworth semi tractor it uses air not electric sound like star- trek lol
Sadly they had to ban the sales of Oldsmobile tornados, they would spin so fast the fenders and wheels would fly off in random directions and cause severe damage to to houses and buildings. 😲
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lmao
Don't forget, lifting up cows and tractors.
For the record, the Seville was not an answer to the 1973 oil crisis, but to the increasing popularity of smaller and more exclusive European cars like Mercedes-Benz. It's development was well underway before the oil crisis...after all, lead times are long in the automotive industry. Bringing an all-new car from conception to market in two years is simply not possible even if they did begin with an existing platform.
There's also no way that one of those which is based on the four-door Nova platform weighs 4600 lbs
LOL… IF you are not a robot…. You are the most uneducated person on uTube creating automotive content.
Tornado? Mark 'Vee'? Funny and sad...
Not to mention “BRO-umm” and “FATE-on”.
The New Yorker Brougham (As in CHRome) also had 4 wheel brakes. Lincoln Mark 5, V=5 in the Roman numeric system. The Stutz Caddy engine displaced 425 cid (7 Litres) it made 180hp. Oldsmobile TORoNADo, NAD as ROD.
Is the guy on the video from outer space?? He managed to mess up all the pronounciations of these cars. It's BR-ohm and Tore-ra-nod-doe not Broh-am and Tornado. He did all this research and can't pronounce the name of the cars. LOL
This video is about as accurate as a dyslexic reading Hebrew wearing welding goggles....wtf?
LOL!!!!!!
OMG LOL , thats funny AF
Wow, this guy is doing great with English as his second language. "Broh-um." "Tornado." "Mark VEE." That being said, I had a 1981 Riv, and it was beautiful car (though too front heavy, and some poor workmanship, IMHO).
I once owned a 1979 Rivera. I really loved that car before, like you mentioned, the poor workmanship took its toll. Did you notice that the narrator in this video mentioned the "digital trip meter" in the Riv while the camera panned down from the digital clock? 😆
@@markshattis6957 LOL that was my exact dash (except for that hot 8-track lol) and believe me, there was nothing digital about it.
Mark 5, not Mark "V". The Mark 4, Mark 3 and Mark 2 preceeded it. Lincoln continued the Mark series well into the 1980s with the Mark 6, Mark 7 and Mark 8.
THANK YOU, Kevin and MS, for those last two comments! I was cringing and getting more pissed off each time he said those names wrong! I've owned a '79 Lincoln Mark V (Five), and of the 8 Lincolns I've had over the past 30 years, the Mark V was probably my favorite. Most comfortable and luxurious ride ever...
The Cadillac with the Phaeton package is not shown in this video, please try again.
The 1978 Cadillac Eldorado did not have any engine option, the former 500 cubic in engine was reduced into 425 cubic inches.
Please pronounce Roman Numerals as Hindu-Arabic numbers are pronounced (Continental Mark V is a Mark "five").
Thank you for showing some fun cars!.
The first front wheel drive car by GM,was the 1966 Olds Tornado, then came the Eldorado in 1967. The 79 Riviera was not the first. This guy needs to do some better research and pronounciation.
He said the first FWD car by BUICK.
Tornado? Bro em? Mark Vee?
@Hello Dino how are you doing?
Youths🤦♂️
This video is full of mistakes. 77 a 78 Eldo has 7.0 litre V8 (425)
The Toronado was always front wheel drive (dating back to 1966 I believe). The Riviera went FWD sometime in the 60s also.
In 66 Olds division of GM wanted to rival the Rivi, so they came up with a very state out the art version which had a complex chain driven front wheel drive system. It was called the TORO NA DO. NOT TORNADO. WTF R U SERIOUS. To speak of car culture and butcher the names as such in this video is like wearing a tank top tucked into your jeans headed for the golf course! 😝 E for effort
You are right! it was Front -wheel drive.
The Eldorado went to FWD in the 60s but the Riv held oot until the '79 downsize.
@@trudygreer2491 you are right. Tornado was always fwd
2:08 The image for the "E platform" is not the E platform (first used in 1963). The picture is the BEV2 platform, developed in 2017 for electric vehicles.
The Eldorado Biarritz, beautiful at any angle 😍❤♥👌
This guy is clearly new to......words and cars.
Turns out I've been pronouncing a bunch of stuff wrong my whole life
LOL!! Laughing my ass off. You know? I"ve been suffering from the same deficiancy my whole life. Well god dam. lol
Lol God love the millennials, no need to do any research or know what you're talking about before you make the video.
LMAO.......me too
Tornado🤣🤣
The Olds Tornado not to be confused with the rare Studebaker Tomato, they only came in red with green vinyl tops.
Please learn how to pronounce toronado properly. It's not prounced tornado
This video needs work😣...cool cars though, especially the Blackhawk!
It would cost too much. Video is out of warranty. Oh, did you notice the fine coachwork on the Blackhawk? Nothing like a 1/4 inch difference in trim height.
What happened to Corinthian leather ?
Sir, a good video, but a couple of things for the future. The Mark, is a Mark 5, the V is taken from Roman numerals as the number 5. The Tornado, the A is pronounced as ah no a an A. The Eldorado you showed is a 1977-78. You made it sound like it was the downsized 1979 which would have been your second most expensive car at over 14 thousand to start. Keep up the great work.
yes, tor nay do!!! over and over again. geek has no idea that we owned most of these cars!!
This was suggested to me. Way too many errors for me to even finish it. It looks like it was done in Europe. They show some right hand drive cars. I stopped it after the "1979" Eldorado debacle. Yuck.
It's Toronado not Tornado
You're still missing the oro part.
A V8 1979 Mustang Indy Pace Car listed for over $9,000. If you could find one that was loaded with a.c. It’s retail price was probably over $10,000 and some dealers added a markup premium to them.
Is the dark blue 79 Corvette stock? I didn't know you could get a 6-71 blower from the factory.
😂😂🤣😂😂
To this day, I look back with fond memories of my 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V, as one of my two favorite cars. The other was my 1962 Cadillac 62 Coupe. Both were a joy to drive. By the way, I owned them both in the 1990s ... I was only a kid when the Cadillac was new!
At 3:01 into this particular video, I must say this Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham sedan 🚗 is my favourite, Wow just beautiful. The colour is I believe autumn maple. Number 7 in the list as the most expensive American cars from the 1970s. I would certainly love to own such a wonderful classic car as this today in 2021.
Definitely in my top 5 dream cars. 😜 gorgeous.
It,s a lot of misinformation iin this video.
I’m surprised he didn’t pronounced the Eldorado, ...”Eldornado”🤣🤭
"Eldorito"
Mark Vee sounds like the name of a 50's Rock n Roll group...Mark Vee and the Continentals
'Doo wap Doo wap, dittle dittle bang bang'
It is Mark ( Five) in Roman Numerals V not Veee
This was when many of our cars were slowly but surely going on a government mandated diet...much to the chagrin of us land yacht diehards!
Sedan de Ville just like it was written on the side of the car you showed at 4:16 . it's not a tornado the only thing that blows is your total lack of knowledge about these cars
I owned a Mark Five. What is a Mark Vee?
Those Tornadoes and Mark Vee’s will never be forgotten 😂
I love the cars of the 70s!
God, where do you begin - so many errors, so little context, such ... inventive pronunciations.
My dad had one of the '70s New Yorker Broughams. His dream car. It was a land yacht. I was in my late teens, 6'1", about 220lbs. I could just about fully stretch out on the back seat. It was also the first car I had ever seen w/ a digital dash. I thought it was soooo cool until he let me drive one night. On I95 in VA, doing about 60 in a rainstorm. The dash went nuts, the speedo and all of the gauges started flashing up and down. Fortunately it kept running.
He took it back to the dealer, he had dealt w/ the same salesman for close to 20 yrs. Seems Chrysler sent all of the dashes to production and claimed they didn't have any spares. They had to give dad a loaner for a month while waiting for the part, then another 2 weeks to get a guy in who could reset the mileage on the new dash to match the old.
No vehicles made by Chrysler had a digital dash until the 1981 - '83 Imperial coupes. The only digital item on anything before that was the clock, or 'chronometer'. New Yorker Brougham K-cars from the 80s did have fully digital dashes...
You had me until you called the Oldsmobile a tornado
Lincoln Continental Mark V, as in Vee? I always thought it was Mark 5
It is pronounced Mark 5, V is the Roman numeral for the number 5.
I"m dying here. Tornado. LOL!! I"ll forgive you. Your research over shadows your pronunciation.
I’ll bet the commentator couldn’t even pronounce “pronunciation” correctly!!! 😂
@@hughinnes2703 LOL!!
I have a 79 Chrysler Cordoba people don't even know what it is half the time think it's a caddy
Proud owner of a 1979 Chrysler New Yorker with the 5th Avenue package... Mechanically, we're twins! :-)
@@draggonsgate thats one big bertha and i know she floats they don't make em like they use to
@@fitness_with_boobie5240 My grandson said said "it looks like one of the ships you cruise on"... and then I told him it was downsized and showed him a vid of a '78 New Yorker... all he could say was "how did you park it?"
The "Tornado", was followed in the coming years as the Cyclone, then the Tsunami, the Snow Storm and lastly, the Dirt Devil.
The 1979 Cadillac Seville was the most expensive Cadillac.
It was called the Toronado, not the "tornado". Do your research better dude. Better yet, ask someone who knew about those cars.
These cars were magic to sit in and drive pure luxury. Mark Five 🥂
I love the Coupe Deville. All great cars.
77' Continental coupe crazy design very rare compared to the Caddy.... The rear end of the continental with the five wheel trunk it's wicked 👀👀👀
Be nice if people who put out these videos actually did research on how to pronounce the car names. It's not Tornado, it's Toronado. And it's not Bro-um, it's BroMmm, one syllable. It's not FAY-TON like some Star Trek phaser, it's faytawn, one smooth word. It's not a Lincoln Mark V, it's a Mark FIVE. Your facts and visuals are excellent, however, so you get props for those.
These are NOT the 10 most expensive cars of the 70s...by a longshot! One example, the '79 Mark Vee (?) Collectors Series stickered at around $23,000. I hate to knock what took some work, but mispronunciations of classic 70s terms, factual errors and omissions and an obvious lack of subject knowledge. Too bad.
It actually didn't take enough work. Know your shit!
I don't think a millennial would know how to get out of bed in the morning without first looking at their phone
My grandfather had one of those Chrysler New Yorkers wow that was a beautiful car that car was so comfortable and when you stepped on that accelerator it would pin you you back in the seat smooth ride they just don't make cars like this no more
Lol, it’s not tornado, it’s Toro - nado. It’s not Lincoln Mark V, the V stands for the Roman numeral 5. I guess the rest of the narration is suspect considering those errors are simple to catch. Living in that era I’m surprised at all the mistakes I this narration. But the overall video was entertaining.
Entertaining time counting the mistakes.
🌪️🌪️🌪️😂😂😂
IMO # 1 should be a car you can purchase directly from the manufacturers,
retrofits belong in a category of their own.
I'm not gonna bash ya. You did your best and that all a person can do. Good job.
I love my classic Caddy. Currently in the process of restoration. Parts are extremely hard to find these days.
Extremely interesting, the Good old days!
I would love to have my ‘79 T-Bird heritage back! Fully loaded except for the CB radio, my NZ girlfriend called it the Yank tank😂
I like how the worst Lincoln is the most expensive.
The Mark 3 was a bit smaller, it had a 7.5L V8 producing 365HP and it had the best build quality of them all.
Mark 5 was the biggest and heaviest with the smallest engine 6.6L V8 and with only 180HP.
Was the Mark III known as the Mark eye eye eye?
I had a Cadillac Eldo in 1976. Black on Black convertable. Show stopper! Turned heads everywhere I went! Loved that car!
These were the golden days. I wasn't alive then, however it was great times. Crazy serial killers were around but we have those now too. Cruise slowly and listen to great music.
My grandfather kept a Jublie Mark with the Cartier clock,my dad was a Mopar man bought mother a brand new New Yorker every 3 years from 73 to 85 the last police car looking 5th Ave.I was in the hood one day drunk guy that was the neighborhood crack-chanic said he had a turbo Riviera told him to go get it and I'll buy it,got it for $700 bucks probably the cleanest car I've ever had for that amount of money, ended up doing a few upgrades from Kirban, but I was the non intercooled non roller motor but after the upgrades it ran pretty good for what it was, never thought I'd see the appreciation for these gems. Both my gramps & dad passed but seeing this almost bought tears to my eyes,I can smell the brand new showroom floor Chrysler leather interior and hear Frankie Beverly playing on our way to the family reunion in Kentucky.🙏
I owned a 1976 Oldsmobile 98 Regency. It came with two anchors and bow and stern lines. It had a 455 cubic inch motor that gave a mighty roar when pushed, but it was so huge, you felt like you were going nowhere fast.
The Consumer Price Index doubled from Jan 1970 to Jan 1980 making a list of "most expensive" without adjustments for that irrelevant.
WOW what trip to the past. Back to when cars had style. I miss them
I had a '78 T-Bird Town Landaue. I had two different drivers run into the rear end. Their cars were totaled and the Bird didn't even have a scratch. It was a literal tank.
To convert the MSRPs into today's dollars, multiply by 7.
The Avanti ii, built to order by the Avanti motor corporation in Indiana certainly would make the list! In 79 it costed some 16000 dollars. No regular production car, but neither was the Stutz.
Hey everyone, it's the Lincoln Mark Vee. C'mon man.
Oldsmobile should have did commercials with Dorothy saying There's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home.
I still have my Mark V. Bought it brand new with every option including the 460. Pulled the motor & slipped in a 514 crate motor with an AOD Trans. Put in true duel exhaust & tuning for 425 rwhp.
FWD V8, heavy nose, long car. That car probably avoid the corner.
It's TOR-AH-NAH-DOH, I was there.
What the heck is a tornado? Reminds me of a radio station where the announcers routinely mispronounced car names like Grand Prix (Grand Pricks) Le Mans (Lemons) and Brougham (Brog-Ham) and no one ever bothered to correct them.
"Tornado"? Must have been a super rare 1 of 1.
Who is this guy who can’t pronounce car names?
The Thunderbird platform was used on Lincoln , Mercury and LTD
The narrator is a dope
I would have liked to hear him pronounce Mark IX
LOL🤪
That little “O” in the middle is important
Ok, Lincoln Mark Vee? I had to continue watching just for laughs.
Can't believe there are no 74 thru 76 Buick Electra's or Coupe Deville Cadillac's on this list . My late Uncle had a 74 Buick Limited that he purchased for $9,876 dollars
Ok the TorOnado thing was funny, but still a great and interesting video of the coolest time period. 😎
ITS T O R A N A DO not TORNADO What a Genius
Tornado? Is that an F3 or an F4?
Such beauty, elegant design, there are no such cars today
Whoever came up with the name “phaeton package” seems to not know what the word phaeton means
My first brand new car was a 1979 Cadillac Coupe de Ville w/the phaeton top. ALL Black, inside/out!
