I live in Japan and listening to "Night is Young" or "I Want You By My Side" while walking at night is ethereal.

    Best genre of Japanese Music!
Personally I'd always include Kinoko Teikoku, given how big and influential they are, even though they kindda moved away from shoegaze.
But look up "Kinoko Teikoku - 東京 (Tokyo) (Live)" on youtube, it's just such a great recording.

hoping you talk about mass of the fermenting dregs on the next video, absolutely love how they manage to fit that sweet high-pitched voice into their heavy riffs and how Natsuko Miyamoto is able to sing in such a melancholic way

I am really late to this video but there are some points7bands I'd like to add to this, all of the bands mentioned are amazing and you should check them out, but you should definitely check out Yuragi's Night Life first its really good. Another band that I would really recommend is Burrrn, their album Blaze Down His Way Like The Space Show is in my top 10 albums of all time and has my favorite song of all time Shut My Eyes. Sphere also have a really strong discography but their best album is Syvyys and I would really recommend it as well.

Hugh actually had no idea about the connection to Ray. I saw them live at a small Fennel(Bassist of Tricot's solo project) and Toddle(guitarist of number girl) show. Didn't realize they were idol girls until they came up, but it def makes sense how they fit. Their music has a lot of shoegaze and post-punky tracks that they dance/sing to. Needless to say, they actually ripped a lot harder than anyone in the audience expected.
Will also mention kurayamisaka is popping off in Japan. Their shows sell out in Tokyo pretty fast right now.
Just a random side note, this is how I got into studying Japanese which eventually ended up with me moving to Japan. Yeah sure, weabed out my mind (still am), but the underground japanese music scene has so much killer stuff going on. Kind of became a situation of fuck it, let's learn this damn language. Been here for 8 years, don't see myself moving back to the US. Tokyo kind of sucks to live in, but the music scene is hands down the best music scene in the world I think.

i think one of my favorite japanese shoegaze bands is probabaly asobi seksu. have most of their cd's and love them. they fell off a bit towards the end of their career but their range of dreamy airy shoegaze to hardcore ear blasting noise walls is amazing.

is the creator a drummer? thanks for the intro! feel that some of the drums were mixed too in-your-face and takes away from the overall sound. Maybe me and some others are sensitive to drums n bass in general. He's right though the vocals was able carry Yuragi and such.

Really good bands listed here. I was just a bit confused on why you would mention Tokyo Shoegazer before Coaltar of the Deepers? Tokyo Shoegazer did some covers of COTD's work as an ode to the band. Seems like a missed oppertunity not putting them on the list...

Tbh I don’t agree with you’re review of Tokyo shoegazer. They’re good but I don’t think every shoegaze band’s guitars should sound like them. I’d get sick of shoegaze pretty quick tbh. I like the way Coaltar of the Deepers does it, Narasaki is so underrated and influential in the scene.
