Britain patented the large scale radio tower type radar systems. but they did not invent radar or the first to get a patent on it. Heinrich Herz (as in Hrz) was doing experiments with radio wave detection around the 1880's and Christian Hülsmeyer was the first person to get a patent down (in 1904) for a radar detection system on boats called the "Telemobilescope" He is credited as the inventor of radar . It was mainly used for detecting large rocks in fog but could also detect other ships out at sea. Britain were just the ones to patented the traditional large scale radio tower type radar such as the "Chain home" transmitter, but 8 countries were all independantly working on their own large tower based radar systems throughout 1934-1939

Actually no we didn't... radar is a german invention. Firstly Heirich Hertz (as in frequencies measured in Hrz) was doing experiments with radio wave detecting in the 1880's and Christian Hülsmeyer is credited as the inventor of radar, in 1904 he had a patent approved for a radar detection system for boats. What britain is famous for though is getting the patent for the large transmitter tower style radar systems such as "Chain Home" Although to be fair, between 1934-1939 8 other countries (including America, china and russia) were all working on very similar things without each other knowing, but britain got the patent first and then shared their info with america and 4 commonwealth countries (australia, Canada, New zealand and south africa) who used that info to complete there own versions of large scale radar transmitters. Britain just took someone elses idea and scaled it up and claimed credit for it. Popular missconception that we invented radar, we just adapted someone elses idea and scaled it up and then claimed it as a whole new thing.

I grew up playing on a steam engine as a toddler in Corby. It came out of the steel works. It was the old shunt engine. Yellow one. And the giant drag line bucket. From a crane that literally walked. It's all moved and fenced off now. For "safety" reasons. I gained a love of Motorsport engineering growing up in the county of the home of Silverstone in a steel town very close to cosworth Motorsport home in Northampton. The street I lived on was Stephenson's way. Named after designer of the rocket steam engine shown on old £5 notes. My nan lived at James watt avenue. Next to Faraday grove. The school was on Rockingham road. Heading towards Rockingham castle. Near is Rockingham triangle. Historic place of triangular lodge. This is where guy Fawkes plotted to blow up parliament. Hence Nov 5, penny for the guy. Rockingham is now home to a new race track. Rockingham speedway. Just some insight on the background of some history involved in some of those inventions and events locally.

The US Navy was rooted in the colonial seafaring tradition, which produced a large community of sailors, captains, and shipbuilders. Many of the early naval officers and sailors had served in the British Navy or the colonial militias before joining the Continental Navy or the US Navy. Some of them, such as John Paul Jones and John Barry, are considered as the founding fathers of the US Navy. The US Navy also adopted some of the British naval customs and practices, such as the use of ranks, uniforms, flags, and ceremonies. So whilst, of course, America created it's own navy, it is a decendant of British customs, traditions and even people, so this is what Clarkson is referencing.

No and No. we invented the steam locomotive. But the first steam engine was all the way back in 1st century AD which was used for pumping water. And then there were several others along the way which all improved on the idea. The first practical steam loco (and in proper usage, not just going around a little loop of track as a demo) was the Coalbrookdale Locomotive, which was used to haul stock around the Coalbrookdale ironworks.
Radar is actually a german invention, they had the original patent granted in 1904 for a radio wave detection device for boats. Christian Hülsmeyer (of germany) is credited as the inventor of radar. What britain did do was be the first to get a patent approved for the large transmitter tower style radar devices (such as the Chain Home defence system) which made use of magnatrons, which made things a LOT better. So in reality we didnt invent radar, we just vastly improved it and then got a new patent on it and claimed we invented it.. But even that, there was 8 other countries all creating similar devices, without realising they were all doing it. Then England gave our info to America and 4 commonwealth countries, which helped them complete their radar systems. But we did not invent radar.

Steam Engines:James Watt in 1765 is usually credited as the first inventor although, he based it on earlier machines by Thomas Savery in 1705 and Thomas Necomen in 1711. All three were British.
Radar: Invented in 1935 by Robert Watson-Watt. A descendent of James Watt. British.
First modern rocket: invented by William Congreve in 1808 and used in the Napoleonic wars.
It's estimated that between 40-50% of modern inventions, scientific discoveries, etc are British or Britain made a major contribution. How come?
    - The industrial revoulution started here giving us a huge head-start on other nations.
    - Britain was one of the first countries to have compulsory education.
    - We have many of the world's best universities, in particular Cambridge and Oxford.
    - Lastly we're taught about many of our greatest inventors in school, which inspires others to follow in their footsteps.
What America is very good at is taking other people's ideas and marketing them well so that they become universally popular.
Also Americans are great at taking other peoples inventions, tweaking them and then patenting them before claiming they invented it.
Edison was notorious for this, especially the light bulb which again is a British invention by Joseph Swan who Edison later went into business with.

Hearing an English accent helps? I worked with a young bloke who, with a mate, flew into New York and decided to drive across country to L.A. and then fly back home to the Great Southern Land. They bought a heap-of-shit Cadillac for $750 and set off. The only thing holding the panels onto the Caddy was rust; the tyres...sorry tires, were so bald, you could see the air in them! Yet, like all true-blue, fair dinkum, ridgie-didge, Wild Colonial Boys, they fearlessly sallied forth with a song in their hearts and a can of beer at their lips!
Being in no hurry, they dawdled their way across the U.S. Out on the highways and freeways of Seppoland, cops took one look at the near-derelict Cadillac and pulled it over. Once they heard the Aussie accents, they forgot all about upholding the law and just wanted to talk about Australia!
Young women in cafes and diners and roadhouses along the way, would hear the dulcet tones of the Strine accent and invite them to spent the night at their homes! They paid for a motel room just twice in the whole trip. When they got to the airport in L.A., they abandoned their stout conveyance in the long term car park and flew back to a place that is so glorious, God goes there on His holidays! But it's still a trip well worth repeating, because another generation of Seppos has emerged and is just waiting for a couple of masterful Aussie bullshit artists to take advantage of them!

What Clarkson never mentions is most American cars up to the 60's 70's and 80's were built big with soft riding suspension for much longer highway travels we have here in the US which is HUGE compared to the UK, east to west is some 3,000 miles and north to south is some 2,000 odd miles, you could get in an old school american luxury car and drive 1,500 miles and not feel like you had been beaten to death by every pavement strip and pothole, they were smooth QUIET and comfortable - they were never meant to be sports cars, but the government took care of that now we drive plastic cracker boxes that break down at every intersection because in our NEW WORLD ORDER everything in them is made in mexico and other shit countries. I miss those smooth quiet cars and the cheap gas we used to have until the politicians banned drilling and sold us out - why doesnt Clarkson talk about Britains luxury barges like Rolls Royce, Bentley etc. not like the UK never had big luxury cars - and they still do at EXTREMELY HIGH PRICES.

Radar.. no.. it was the british that first demonstrated it working and then gave the US the Magnetron Number 12 (along with other secrets in the Tizzard mission)..
Which was vastly more compact and powerful than contemporary systems
The british had chain home (radar defence along the south and east coast for battle of britain) in 1939.
US did have radar in development but had only done a test in 1939 on USS NY and were orders of magnitude behind the british designs.

The Brits only learned about it 31 years later in 1928.
The actual Radar was invented by the French, by the CSF in 1934 (French patent number 788795), and the first one equipped the French cargo ship Orégon, followed in 1935 by the French transatlantic liner Normandie.

We was just the first to get a patent for the large transmiter tower style radar devices. although there was 8 other countries (including America, China and Russia) all working on similar systems without each other realising. Brits tend to annunciate better to begin with and with their regional accents are thus obvious to us, and conversely the oppositely obvious with USA-ians to us.
