    Very fair and unbiased review, unlike many RUclipsrs who hyped up the “awesomeness” of external display for iPad. As a pure iPad user, based on my experience, I totally agree with what you said. It’s good but it doesn’t support much app for professionals who used it. Many apps are not reliable on external display and there are many bugs and issues I came across with it until I’ve decided not to use external display anymore.

    So far my experience has been mostly enjoyable. The only frustrating thing really is the window sizes. If they would just make it like Mac windows it would be such a game changer or at least give the option to toggle them that way or devs get the option to. Another small change that would make it miles better would be the option to have an actual mouse curser. I do not like what it is now and I do know it is an accessibility thing. But it is very lazy to just use that instead of an actual curser. Otherwise its so enjoyable. Until actually feels like a desktop experience in every little detail though, my MacBook will still be my main go to. Honestly I don’t think it would be hard for them while also keeping the uniqueness of the iPad .

    Love the video! I’ve been tinkering with the idea of using my iPad on an external display. I really envy your “Control Centre” setup which you have on your iPad screen, with the shortcuts, etc. Can you please share further info on this? Are you able to advise how to create those shortcuts?

    Great review! I almost considered getting an M2 iPad Pro as a replacement for my 2015 MBP for when I go back to the office (I'm loving my M1 Mac Mini + iPad 7th gen) but when you mentioned the cons, it felt like a deal breaker, at least for now. I think nothing replaces the real desktop (or laptop) experience.

    What I’ve found is my personal computing needs are pretty limited: I have a PC I’m provided by work (support engineer), and so anything work related is done on that. That leaves my personal needs as browsing, bills, maybe some limited productivity work in Word or Excel and family planning stuff. The iPad is ideal for that, but sometimes you want a bigger screen. A dock means when I’m working, I plug in my PC laptop, and for personal stuff now I just plug in the iPad if I want to write something extended or deal with documents. For me, Stage Manager is great because it removes the need to own a personal laptop or desktop at all.

      Same here man! I’ve got an aging MacBook Pro and an M1 iPad Pro. I was thinking of replacing my MacBook Pro with something new.. but with Stage Manager and full external display support I really don’t need to now! I just use the iPad. I got the Magic Keyboard on it and just sit down and plug it into a USB-C 4K Monitor and boom.. a desktop computer that handles most things really well.

    • @Piotorro
      @Piotorro Год назад

      Yeah, that’s something I was contemplating too. I have my work PC to handle work. But for private use I also have aging MBP 2015. Was thinking about replacing it with M2 MBA but now actually considering iPad Air M1 of iPad Pro 11” M1 with external monitor support could maybe cover my personal needs (email, RUclips, Netflix, browsing, banking). I take for that stage manager on external monitor would be good enough, right?

    • @ExpatBriton
      @ExpatBriton Год назад +1

      @@Piotorro It works for me so far. I've bumped into some weird edge cases, for instance certain pages on my 401k website don't load right for some reason, nomatter what I do, but those are minor enough I don't feel like it's a huge deal.

    One thing that really gets me is that I can’t use AirPlay to my external speakers when I’m connected to my monitor. This did work in 16.2 beta (if you used a Shortcut) but was broken in 16.3. I do sympathise with you. In January 2022 I needed to replace my aging iPad Air 2 and was torn between the iPad Mini 6 and the 11 inch M1 iPad Pro. In the end I decided to go for the latter even though it was more expensive and had way too much power, just to future-proof it a little . At WWDC 2022 when I saw external display demonstrated I was relieved I went for the M1 iPad Pro as this was something I always wanted for the iPad. Hopefully more of the iPad line-up will have external display support as time goes on and I’m sure that Apple and app developers will improve the current experience.

    • @ethanwasme4307
      @ethanwasme4307 Год назад +1

      i would have gone for the mini if it had an M1 chip... for the sole reason that i want to play videos games at 60fps for at least 5 years... from my understanding the mini6 is already starting to show performance under 60fps in some new titles...
      for this reason i was going to get the air 5 64gb model... but that's not enough storage... so save a little longer for the 128gb model, but notice I'm 100 dollars away from getting an ipad m1... but then i also notice I'm another 150 away from the m2... that's how apple gets you!

    Could you tell me if you had glitches when Keyboard and Mouse were connected to the monitor on USB and monitor to iPad with Type C ?. For me the iPad Pro doesn’t take input from the keyboard and mouse through the monitor no matter what I do. It has simply stopped doing that and my iPad is 90% useless at the moment.

      Hmmm I've only every had them connected to the iPad itself so I couldn't say

      @@ByteReview Could you try if you have USB ports on your monitor and a Type C interface? I don't know how people are missing out on this part because if they have to use the Mac later, they have to unpair the keyboard and mouse from iPad and connect with Mac. But this just avoids that hassle.

    Anyone else having issues connecting their M1 iPad Pro to a Studio Display using this setup? My iPad will not support and external displays since updating to iPad OS 17.1.1! 😥

    iPads are cool as long as they are used as tablets. But when we wish to do more stuff like a regular PC, its going to be on its knees!

    And i regret buying it, sans any other apple device. All it basically does without spending a fortune is media consumption.

    I tried this yesterday, which is why I am here today. Worst experience ever. The iPad took FOREVER to connect to an Apple Keyboard and trackpad. then they kept dropping out. I tried on a 1440p monitor and a 4K monitor. Neither will go Full screen and I do have iPadOS 16.2 and have no updates to go further. Then the Audio was a massive issue. even when I got it to work with my airpods, when you moved stuff like youtube to the monitor, you lost audio completely.... I am not sure why people think this is good. the sound issues. connection issues. This is the worst Apple experience I have ever seen. This needs to be put back in the oven and baked another year before it's an option for anyone.

    I find this whole concept kind of funny. The whole point of the iPad, literally the reason it exists, is for its touch screen. But it seems Apple is very intentional on marketing the iPad as a productivity "can do it all" machine, to extend their consumer reach. Quite frankly, I think most people realize that an iPad, no matter how functional it seems, cannot replace desktop iOS, and so there is rarely going to be people who use an iPad as their main computer. This just feels like they are convincing people that an iPad can be a great note taking device, a laptop, AND now a full on desktop, so that they'll buy into it. Only for them to later down the line, realize they should've just purchased a MacBook Air, because the iPad is essentially just a giant iPhone.

    Pretty annoyed they only supported the M chips. They’re not using a new architecture like switching from intel so it’s kinda just a money grab to force us to upgrade even though older iPads could support it 🙄

    I'm amazed Apple have officially released an OS as buggy as this. This simply isn't ready for external display support. I have found that so many apps just crash on my M1 iPad Pro when connected to an external display. The only way it seems to be stable is if you operate primarily in the Safari browser but then this makes it no better than a Chromebook. And to be honest a Chromebook is significantly better, and cheaper when used in this manner. The iPad Pro is a wonderful tablet but it is an awful Chromebook/computer. If any other manufacturer or company had dictated how users place or size windows on a screen, they would be absolutely mauled by the press and critics. However, Apple appear to get away with this unacceptable approach to window management and multitasking. Quite honestly, I find this to be mind-boggling. Microsoft and Samsung would never hear the end of it. Here we are in 2023 and $1000+ devices which Apple regard as computers simply are not reliable when used as computers.
