I just started working at Disney in 1999 and literally fell in love with this show. I'd see it every chance I got. I was even picked to be Wendy of the Beets when they picked people from the audience. I had such a huge crush on Roger and wanted so bad just to meet the performer, but alas, it never happened. I did, however, get a nice autographed postcard from him telling me to not be a loser like Doug. Love love love this show, the cartoon, and everything about it (and yeah I do agree with you that Disney ruined it, but at least they made the Roger/judy thing happen hah). Great times thanks for this video!!!!
I am completely trippin out right now. Doug was one of my favorite tv shows growing up by far so I clicked on this video. The part that is blowing my mind is that the Lunchables that come with with treat and Caprisun is on sale for less then the same without the treat and drink so I got one a few hours ago for the first time in years and was finishing it up as I clicked on this video. I still can’t believe it. What a ridiculous coincidence that was a reference at the beginning of the video.
I just realized Roger has a jacket, not the Hunter-Hearst Helmsley getup he had in the Disney cartoon. He miraculously got sleeves when he leaped off the page!
Ngl when I first saw the idea about the face performers in this show i honestly found it more cursed than those goggled monstrosities that Phineas and Ferb Live had
Seeing things like pork chop make me appreciate things like the lion king on broadway more,in terms of the way that animals are potrayed on stage.its possible to potray animals on stage without making them nightmarish disney common!
My dad got to be one of the Beets when we went to this. I really enjoyed it cause I loved the Doug cartoon as a kid. My dad was given a poster too from it.
I loved this show as a kid! But I was always so conflicted because I wanted to be Quail Kid but I didn't want to miss getting to watch the show, so I'd try to get one of my parents picked as one of the Beets instead, haha!
Awww, I used to watch Doug on Nickelodeon all the time! It was such a great show, I wish I'd been able to see the live show! Doug was full of life lessons for teens with self anxiety. Seriously some episodes still make me tear up!
Another great video Dan! But you did get one thing wrong in this video, "Doug Live" was performed in the same theater that the "First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration" is currently in now, not the building "Sounds Dangerous" was in. Other than that, keep up the amazing work Dan!
Wow. I'm so sad I missed this live show as a kid! Doug was one of my favorite shows! In highschool marching band, we had a section costume day and my entire trombone section dressed up as Quailman.
@@Sun_Simp " Hell is forever" hmm... Youre reminding me of a book that is not published... Where did you hear this quote? I wonder if the world is as small as I am thinking.
There's a youtube channel called Dr. Coolsex who did a movie trailer for a live action Doug movie, based on the Nickelodeon version. It was amazing. They used colored makeup and made all the characters look as much as possible like they did on the show. No stupid Disney stuff. Their Roger was especially awesome!
I actually met the costume character Doug so it’s interesting they chose a face character for the live show. To be honest, I can’t remember if I met Doug in Disney or in Universal in the Nickelodeon area…
Your enthusiasm for Doug and all your other content gives me hope for the future sir..."the girl in town with jaundice" I'm dead lol...thanks for all the positivity you put out into the world..it's needed
Omg I remembering watching this show when I was little and I was so confused. I was like that’s not pork chop and Doug had too much hair on his head. Thanks for reminding me Disney Dan.
Y'know, maybe they would've been better off just using "mascot costumes" (as in, with the heads covered and everything). I know they had those for Doug and Patti that did meet and greets. Porkchop might've been better as a puppet.
I was JUST wondering this week why no one’s really done a video on this show - I have VIVID memories of this, it was like my favorite thing at MGM; my husband got to be Quailkid once and I will never stop resenting him for it lmao
Saw the show once way back when I was like 4, and the only thing I remember was watching home videos of my dad being chosen as a volunteer drummer for the band
It’s still both amazing and funny that THIS was a thing, The more you know. Also Dan I think it’d be great you went into the history of the power rangers at Disney Hollywood Studios
As soon as you mentioned the clapping to bring Tinkerbell back to life, it brought back a memory for my mom, like you just brought mom back memories she forgot she had! I thought it was so cool! :D
I have such a weird connection to this live show - I never saw it, but my grandparents got my mom one of those "preparing for a Disney trip" VHS tapes when I was born that featured the show, and I would watch that tape _religiously_ as a child. Broke my heart when I realized how wildly outdated it was and that 50% of the featured attractions weren't even at the parks anymore lol. Great video as always!
Wow! That helmet thing is surprisingly quite genius! As someone who has worked with young teens and had very heart wrenching discussions with them about combatting self loathing and insecurities (and obviously I was a teen myself), I actually teared up a little at the implication of what that helmet is doing to him on the inside and then seeing him prostrate on the floor having succumbed to it! Damn that's dark but so good!!
Hilarious ad placement! As soon as you said what if Skeeter has poop on his hands after using the bathroom when he's holding those tickets and advertisement for chocolate melty chocolate came on.
The nipple blur of the Clooney Batman suit got me 😂🤣🤣 loved this revisit to one of my all time favorite shows ever. I had no idea they did a live show. The blocking of Doug/Rockos Modern Life/Rugrats/and Ahh Real Monsters was ICONIC. When they added in All That/Kenan&Kel/Figure it Out/GUTS/Legends of the Hidden Temple/and the Amanda Show as amazing live action kids shows, Nickelodeon was dominating the kids TV space
I think it's a bit weird that Doug is the only one not painted, like yes he's the closest to flesh coloured anyone on the show is but still it's weird how human he looks compared to the rest of the cast. Also both Patty and Roger got a hair downgrade in the Disney version. Like look at their cuts in the Nicktoon! They were perfect.
I wonder if I'm the only one who thought Patty was black with blonde (yellow) hair. It always seemed like she and Doug were the only ones with "normal" skin tones. Seeing her with yellow make-up instead is... bizarre. Also, the strangest part of live-action Skeeter is the completely normal length nose.
Patty is orange in the cartoon. and it's not weird that Doug is the only one not colored cuz that's how he looks in the cartoon. Duh. Doug is based on Jim Jinkin's life growing up. Everyone else is a random color because race is otherwise irrelevant.
I was Quail-Kid when I saw this. So glad you did a video because I honestly never saw most of this - being behind stage getting ready. Although not explicitly Doug Live merch, I did get a Quail Man action figure after the show from an outdoor vendor near the theater. I can’t remember what else was there but there could have been a Beets shirt
I love that the set is super fun, and reasonably thoughtful for what it is, then the actors look like they should be in a porn parody of Doug. Also, can we discuss how old they all look? The face paint and terrifying hair makes them look like they're in their forties.
I saw this show when I was 4 (2000) and my mom got pulled in to be with the band! I was so shocked but was also too preoccupied screaming at Roger LMAO
I can’t fault it completely, as a Nick UK viewer visiting Orlando in 1999 it was actually the only thing I saw based on a Nick show I had seen. Went to the Nickelodeon studios before MGM on the same vacation but nothing was on show from anything that made it’s way overseas. They did reference ones that did but that’s it’s. So wrong Doug era but sorta counts as Nick I knew.
3:24 okay YES joke acknowledged but for real though, every theme park would triple their sales if they went back to the more “giant 90s prop” aesthetic, love that shit.
One funny thing about the Big Book of Dating (For Boys) is that it was a history book with a different cover, and every time they opened it it just so happened to open to pictures of Holocausts victims. One version of this stage show was uploaded by the guy who played Skeeter and he had annotations on the video back when those were a thing. Had other weird trivia bits, like that the helmet they put on Quailman was originally made of fiber optic cables and broke after using it the first time, or that Skeeter would go backstage and play video poker while waiting for his scenes.
There was other Doug merch in the parks, even if it wasn't Doug Live specific merch. I remember seeing this twice and getting a Doug how to draw type kit (Google is telling me it's called a Doug Doodle Desk) at the gift shop.
6:59 and 12:13 got me rolling! You couldn't honk higher like with Skeeter's voice?
