    Oohata and Ohata (more correctly rendered Ōhata) are not the same name. 大畑 or 御旗 are just a couple examples of how different they can look in Japanese. Vowel extensions matter folks!
    I'm by no means an expert on japanese but I've studied the language for almost 3 years and use it daily with my japanese friends

      This!!! Thank you for pointing it out. I do my best to avoid romaji now to avoid that Confusion. Once I see the Kanji to the name, it all starts to make sense.
      I’m also no expert by any means myself. Barely getting by with about 320 Kanji Characters here but thankfully having Japanese friends also helps as well.

    “There’s a strong survivorship bias. We only see credits for games that come to completion. It’s impossible to see credits for those whose games don’t or who are working on projects that are much smaller.” I also think it’s pretty common for people to work on various forms of media. Take for instance Yoshitaka Amano. When he wasn’t designing for video games, he was working on anime or other media. I’m quite fond of his work on Angel’s Egg which was an influence on Dark Souls. A relatively smaller game designer is Travis Baldree who has disappeared from game development for long stretches of time only to resurface with titles such as the Torchlight series. In recent years his interests have turned to audiobook narration and authoring his own novels. When we can see all that a particular game creator has worked on, we see often their complex and varied wealth of interest. I’ve found Timothy Cain’s (known for Fallout among other games) channel very eye-opening. I love to see a single creator’s varied journey through artistic creation. Be it solely in the field of video games or in a varied capacity, such as seen with artists such as Akira Toriyama. Then to see how seemingly very different works are related to one another.

      For me it's very important who is making the game, even more important than being a Mario & Luigi
      Games are not good due to the IP, they are as good as the work and talent of the development team.
      If it's not people fromAlpha Dream the game would not have a reason to be any better than a random indie game inspired in Mario & Luigi

    Good forecast. Important for you to have noted that while some AlphaDream staff may have returned for Brothership, it wouldn't be too too many as the whole reason the developing house went bankrupt is because there was a fundamental issue with their team.
    More than likely, the new M&L developer would bring back some core technical experts from the M&L team at AlphaDream, but they would only be brought on for their experience with the franchise rather than their ability to lead a new entry.

    • @TurboPikachu
      @TurboPikachu 4 месяца назад +25

      That’s the brilliance of the Japanese game industry compared to the western industry. While Sega has lost the vast majority of their Dreamcast/GameCube/PS2/Xbox creatives, almost all of the names that brought us Sega’s best games have impressive portfolios at other studios after leaving Sega.
      Meanwhile over here stateside, AAA publishers happily terminate thousands (almost tens of thousands) of positions at their companies a year, and most recognizeable devs rarely get to work on games again afterwards

    • @CTomCooper
      @CTomCooper 4 месяца назад +5

      @@TurboPikachu It’s a massive difference in culture I think. Frankly it seems with in-house studios over in Japan they’re more incentivized to run their business in order to retain their employees. They market to a core audience and follower base and stick to that for generating a flow of income. Not that there aren’t shareholders or stakeholders in their companies; of course there are, but the overall tight-knit mentality of Japanese culture really serves to their benefit.
      The west is really different with chasing after sponsorship money, and how stakeholders can play a large part in the funding and developing of company projects where gaming is no exception. Hiring employees to later let go of them, and buying IP’s merely to sit on them or to rebrand them, does a lot to play up numbers and statistics for quotas (Ubisoft’s latest AC being a clear example). But it doesn’t run a business effectively, except for the matter of running businesses into the ground. At least where so far as the states, the current state of affairs cultural is largely living under debt. Where there’s a prevalent culture war I think that ultimately becomes magnified to the degree it currently is at because of how debt and the monetization of debt so heavily shapes the western gaming industry. Japan doesn’t have this issue with the likes of popular IP’s in anime and manga composing the bulk of their entertainment industry, being a prominent export.

    Off topic, but after watching the clips in the video, I'm reminded of how good Mario RPG's remake looked.
    Of the 3 x recent RPG remakes, Mario RPG looks the best imo. Paper Mario TTYD looks nice & all, but the leap from SNES to Switch (plus the 60 fps target) make it look so nice, while M&L Brothership's cel-shaded art & cartoony animations is super unique.
    Either way, it's so cool that the Switch finally brought all 3 of these series together under 1 roof!

      ILCA had worked on Pokemon Home and was big enough that TPC probably saw contracting them for BD/SP to be the right call, as most other studios they've partnered with are small or busy with their own things (HAL Laboratory hasn't touched Pokemon in years, for instance). And if Nintendo's working with them, it's presumably just because they've followed much of the talent from AlphaDream to their new workplace. They did the same thing with Another Code Recollection, as quite a few Cing staff members were hired at Arc System Works and returned for that project. In fact, this video highlights that a lot of the AlphaDream alumni we know are at ILCA even worked on BD/SP, something that I think all the people whining about ILCA's rumored involvement with Brothership because of those remakes should know.

    I do want to point out that Mistwalker is a design studio (like Sora Ltd.) and not going to hire a whole lot. If I remember correctly, Blue Dragon and The Last Story used Artoon, Lost Odyssey used Feelplus and Terra Battle and Fantasian relied on Arzest. There's a good chance the Fantasian staff were a part of Arzest (assuming they weren't freelance in the moment).
    Also, I want to point out that you missed an important part of Mario & Luigi's credits. At the very bottom of Special Thanks, they list Digital Works Entertainment. This is another outsourcing company but, they do not list who was a part of this company sort of. In a lot of credits, the employees of outsourced companies are listed at the end of each section but, they don't list the particular cutoff point. Thus, some of these people never directly worked for Alphadream. If you inspect the Tekken 8 credits, you can see Yuuki Amano for instance is actually under Digital Works.
