Sweet. I started mine 3 years ago. I started them indoors ( winter 2016 ) then, planted them outdoors. For the winter 2016-2017, I covered them with dead leaves held with a net. Summer 2017, they double in height. Lost one in winter 2017-2018. Summer 2018, I prune them because they were almost 4 feet high. Let see what 2019 season will reserve me. So far, no fruits or flowers. One thing I've noticed is, the color of the leaves changes when they're under heat stress (From a green to a hue of purple). Make sure they have enough water and homemade compost helps a lot. Good luck.

Its about time that I find a channel who is willing to share some information on how and where Asian pears can be grown. I live in zone 5 (I think ). Its on the Canadian side of New-York State. I started to grow 16 seeds from stratification. 15 of them has a shoot. I recently planted them in plastic cups. I wouldn't consider myself as a novice in gardening but, be sure that I'm willing to try anything. I love fruit trees when its loaded with flowers. I don't intend to grow them for the fruits but, it would be a bonus. Thanks for sharing.

R Verro Asian pears are not as cold hardy as European pears. You can probably grow them but should expect tree damage (possibly death) after extreme cold. Seedlings will be genetically unique and quite variable- most will not bear good fruit. Many will be gritty or bad tasting. Seedlings will mostly be very thorny as well. One other point is that Asian pears are not a pear/apple hybrid but are all pear.

6978gary The seeds came from a New Century pear. The height of the plants varies between 1 to 6 inches. Will a thick cover of straw or dead leaves could help them ? When you talked about thorny seeds, is it from a fruit ( If any ) of a tree grown from seeds ? What type of pear tree, similar to an Asian pear tree, could be grown in zone 4-5. I forgot the most important. Pips will rarely grow into a ''true'' fruit tree. Thank you very much.

R Verro Sorry if I was confusing, The seedling trees themselves are thorny, not the seeds. Mulching is good but won't prevent injury to above ground trunk and limbs if it gets cold enough. Probably all European pears are hardy in your area. I'm in North Carolina, so I have no personal experience with the hardiness of Asian pears, but I would expect Korean varieties (Korean Hardy Giant-aka A-Ri-Rang) to be the hardiest. Its always fun to grow seedlings and see what you get. Each one is potentially a new cultivar!

6978gary I see your point. It can get around -30 to -40 F during a really cold spell. The only solution that I was able to come up with was, to built temporary shelters or make plywood boxes around them and fill it up with straw. There's only one way to find out. I'm going to start another dozen seedlings and see if its worth the effort. Worst case scenario, they'll die or will be nothing much to look at. I might be lucky and grow something that will have the genes for harsh winters. I do have some apple trees grown from pips. The chances are really slim to have a real apple tree compare to crab apples. I do agree that it is fun to grow things and not knowing the results.

I'm living in MN ( zone 4 B ). I got some Asian pear trees. I watched a lot of clips about pruning .
    I'm confusing about that.
What's different between summer pruning and winter pruning ? which one for more fruit and which one for shape.
I have some Asian pear. Central leader or vase which shape is the best for them ?

You will have to do some research on Nashi pear trees. It will give you all the information you need. One word of advice, feed your tree with homemade compost.
Praxxus55712 channel is perfect for any level of gardening. Good luck.

The claim about "a cross between apple and a pear" is absolutely wrong. Pyrus Pyrifolia has absolutely no Malus genes.
