You sir are amazing - I was able to fix it myself following your steps, but holy shit that was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life. It took me 8 hours and was sweating all the time like crazy. Even though it worked out perfect I've almost failed couple times so here are my tips:
    1. Some screws are really tight - get a good screwdriver and apply a lot of pressure when twisting. I fucked up few 3 screws because of cheap screwdriver and even had to drill out one of them. Luckily I had replacements.
    2. Plastic knob at 25:46 is surprisingly fragile. I applied too much pressure to it and it broke. Had to super glue it back - no big deal.
    3. Pay extra care when desoldering/soldering aperture flex cable. The connections seem like a normal pins but underneath they are just super thin wires (they look like wire directly from aperture motor). I almost ripped one of them out when pulling old flex
    4. Get a organizer for screws and mark them with timestamps from disassembly video. It has been a huge help for me when assembling back. There are about 15 types of screws here.
    Once again thank you!

Thank you for the feedback! I don't use organizer for the screws, but I place the lens parts and screws next to eachother on my table, so when I have to assemble the lens, I always know which screws or parts are the next.

At 24 mins in, instead of placing the focussing element in the front barrel, position it correctly in the zoom barrel and then carefully slide the whole tube into the front end of the focus barrel, being careful not to trap the 2 flex cables. It will be easier to line up the focussing peg and key if the large front lens element is removed.
Otherwise, I have found your video very clear and helpful.
    Thanks
    Brian B.

Every step is very well described and my lens is new again :D

Seriously, unless you are very experienced just don't attempt this, it is an absolute nightmare and so many of the parts are extremely fragile and very easy to break, even when taking extreme caution! These tutorials are very thorough, but this man is a professional and this is not as easy as it looks!

Wonderful guide! I came to check how the zoom cam barrel works. The two tubes rotate independently which is quite nice design. Did you just mark the IS colar position so you do not need to re-calibrate this lens?

Great series, much appreciated! However, I'm still having the same issue "Err 01" after replacement, but it's slightly improved since I can take some pictures. Could there be something else that's malfunctioning? The pictures are also not as sharp as I thought they would be, I guess I missaligned the calibration-screws. Thanks!

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  7 месяцев назад

Error 01 problem: check if the lens gives you this error if you use it other than f/4 aperture. Also, check if the aperture is working by setting it to small, use the DOF button on your camera and see inside the lens if the aperture is moving. As I remember, the IS unit could cause aperture problems: if the IS cable is broken, then the aperture doesn't work correctly, it goes to random positions if you set it to small.. you can check that also with the DOF button. If the aperture is the problem, you can disassemble the lens, check the connection of the aperture flex cable with a multimeter, change the aperture cable, or change the whole aperture unit which is not too expensive on aliexpress. Also, check if the aperture cable is not damaged when you put back that metal holder which bends the aperture cable back... if you push the metal which bends the cable too much, it could damage the cable.
Sharpness problem: There is a lens on the aperture unit which has 3 screws and 3 pins for calibration. When you put back the three screws don't tighten them. First, tighten them lightly until you feel some resistance, then twist the screws back by quarter to half round.

@@CamerasLensesEtc hi again, here with the results. 1. I tested all aperture settings and the camera works perfectly on f/4, but gives err 01 on every other setting. 2. Turning IS on/off does nothing, but I guess I could measure the IS cable with a multimeter during my next teardown. 3. Didn't even know what that button (DOF) did. The aperture jumps to random positions like you describe, and it's not always moving to another position. Tested another lens and the blades jump instantly, so there's a problem for sure. 4. I ordered a complete aperture unit that I will try. 5. I tighted those 3 screws very lightly, but I did not back off. I'll try that aswell. Thank you for the help, I've got something to work with now!

    • @CamerasLensesEtc

If the problem is that the front lens tube is loose, wobbling or have zoom creep, than you have to tighten the three screws which you see at 26:30 in this video.
