  • At least 17 passengers suffered injuries after the Waverley paddle steamer crashed into a pier on the Isle of Arran.
Police were called to the ferry terminal in Brodick at 5.15pm after the vessel, which is the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, hit the pier. One passenger who was on the steamer said everyone on board was told to disembark and move away to allow ambulances to get past.
He told STV News: “We were on the way back into the ferry terminal at Brodick and they didn’t seem to slow down at the last minute as they normally do and all of a sudden there was a bang and most people that were standing up got knocked over as we came to a rapid stop.”
It is believed that 213 passengers and 26 crew were on board at the time of the collision. A total of 17 have reported injuries, and a number have been taken to hospital with head and spinal injuries.

Let's hope the Waverley can keep sailing for the rest of this summer season. So sad - so soon after she's finished her huge refit we've all been following.

By witness accounts, a member of the public was steering the ship when she hit Brodick Pier. Coincidence??

Good job there is no crime or budget pressures in Scotland, as otherwise all these dozens of cops in their cars and 'copters would not have been able to waste hundreds of hours and thousands of pounds sitting around the dock after this wee boat denting incident doing nothing productive at all...

Was the captain drunk? How do you hit a pier with enough force to damage it and cause so many injuries? I’ve seen countless boats ad ferries pulling into piers, and they’re always moving very slowly.
Every time I hear about the Waverley these days it seems to be either “it’s crashed” or “we need money for a refit or repairs”. What’s going on?

It's said a passenger was allowed to steer, if you're docking, don't just try to steer it like you know it.

How convenient. There has been a serious uptick in the amount of things crashing, blowing up or going on fire all over the world recently under the cover of the sniffles. Not at all foul play or pre planned 🤔😂😂😂

There is only one paddle steamer, and it has had alot of accidents. Not all can be contributed to bad luck, bad weather. There is definite incompetence at play here. I worked on her and Balmoral, and saw the corner cutting and risk taking for myself

This boat has had more accidents and money thrown at it than can be justified. Dock it and get something safe for trasportation is it insurance claims that maintain it or public money.

How about we all wait for the accident report before simply stating the vessel is unsafe and should never be returned to service. Paddle steamers themselves are proven to be a safe form of transport if operated and maintained correctly. Yes, the Waverley has had a couple of bumps over the years, but when you consider just how long she's been in service, her accident record is very good. Plenty of other vessels, with a life span of less than half of the Waverley's suffer the same amount of bumps, if not more. Only they are not famous, so don't attract the nationwide press reports that any incident involving the Waverley does.

You're the kind of person who says "oh, old ships should be docked forever because of this accident" but then would agree to teleport to the Costa Concordia in 2012, after they explained that it will sink.
