Considering that the Doberman was bred by a tax collector as a canine bodyguard back when they still went door to door on collection day, it was probably done originally to make them more intimidating and harder to grab in a fight.

Then your not very bright ever wonder why beagles can't move their ears? OK I'll get an article to prove my statement
      Here's one from 2013
Whether the dog has flopped or pricked ears, they both have 18 separate muscles that control the position of the ear. Each type of ear goes through the same range of motions, it's just that the weight of a drop-ear prevents it from scanning the horizon like a radar dish.
For example, a small triangular flap ear, such as a pug's, can be held back away from the head, pricked up, flopped down and more. However, contrast this with a breed such as the Cocker Spaniel, who has heavy, dangly ears coated in luxurious fur, or the long, heavy ears of the Bloodhound, and you see they are physically unable to lift the weight of those ears.

Honestly the communication thing makes sense if you were talking about the pitbull crop, which takes off about 90% of the ear. Doberman crops, however, only take off enough to get the ear to stand up on its own and not fall forward. Honestly I think erect ears make it easier for me to tell how the doberman is feeling. They're like flags being moved back and forth. The flopped ears are a bit subtle for me to see sometimes. Also crops on Dobermans don't actually have any long-lasting health effects if the procedure is done right, despite what some critical activists claim.

Volunteer at a Doberman rescue. Unless the Doberman is hunting no reason to dock and crop. It’s purely an aesthetic choice for a stay at home dog. But I still had my baby cropped and docked as I believe much like people, dogs want to look and feel their best. The attention she receives for her look def gives her an ego boost as she never leaves the house without receiving a handful of compliments. And this day and age it’s 100% able to be done with consideration. My baby was given pain meds, anesthesia, blood work, anti biotics. I don’t think it should be banned but like with humans it should be illegal for dogs to get backyard ear crops and tail docks. Should be done by professionals with care.

Cropping a Doberman's ears actually increases its ability to communicate via body language, because it can rotate, perk, or flatten the ears just like a husky, GSD, corgi, or any dog with naturally straight ears. A floppy eared dog cannot do that, as the ears are always limp.
Dobermans were also the one and only breed created for the specific purpose of protecting an individual (as opposed to protecting livestock or a property). They are meant to look menacing, since a "cute" looking dog doesn't really make a good deterrent and must actively be trained in protection work to be an effective deterrent at all (if that's why you got the dog).
My dobie girl is a rescue, but with her cropped ears and only half docked tail, she can use both to clearly communicate with everybody we meet. While she gets along great with strangers and friends alike, she is also an excellent "creep deterrent" and can certainly put on her Scary Face when needed.

Docking and cropping serve a legitimate purpose. Their ears are NOT cut off, they are cut and made to stand erect. The docking and cropping were done in Dobermans because the Doberman is the only dog that was created from the ground up to be a personal protection dog.
First of all, the original cropping of the ears was an extremely much shorter cut and was done so that the dogs long floppy ears could not be bitten by another animal easily or grabbed by a human to hold the dog back. The show ring is responsible for the long show cut we see in many dogs today. Also, docking of the tail was also done to make it so that a person could not grab the animal by the tail and control the animal. As a retired LEO, I have seen dogs grabbed by the long tail and thrown around and even dragged away from a scene because they could be controlled by grabbing their tail.
If we docked that tails properly and returned to the original shorter ear cropping it would all be obvious to the casual onlooker. Ear cropping and tail docking are tools to actually help keep the dog safe and also assist in the work they were actually designed for. Too many dogs are now simply pets and too many people listen to the words of the uniformed. Dobermans are working dogs and were created for personal protection. Docking and cropping also happens to give the dog a certain "look" but that was not why these things were done. Look up Dobermans from years ago, especially the history of the Doberman Pinscher. You will see extremely shorter ears and you will also find a dog with much more drive and working ability than most dogs today.

To try and throw it in with this topic is typical of how people operate today. Associate a known bad thing (dog fighting) with something else and add the stigma. Wrong!! One thing has nothing to do with the other. Docking and cropping serve legitimate purposes that are beneficial to a working dog in the long run.
Humans have manipulated and created just about every breed in the world.
      What about spaying and neutering?

German breeds keep the ways they were bred for working. Doberman, Rottweiler, boxers always dock the tail. The ears are specific to the person and what they like. Curting the tails like we always did with out boxers and never had a problem, thats done so the tail doesn't impede in the working by knocking into things etc. The ears are done due to the hanging of the ear on top of itself promotes ear mites, thus why cutting the ears helps. Without exception, the ones without the cropped ears had ear infections and lots of cleaning of dark yeast I had to do in the ears. Those with the cropped ears...nothing. Also, the cropped tails and ears were for fighting and protection breeds in the day, making it hard for humans or other dogs to hold or grab by the tail or ears, or bite the ears or tail.

And it’s legal for the dog owner to have the tail cut off at the second joint at the appropriate age usually when the dog is about 1 month or older

    :ATTACK TRAINED
    :MILITARY PURPOSE
    :POLICE K9 UNIT.
    and so on..

Ear cropping and tail removal is for a few reasons. But people who have already made up their minds about it are unwilling to listen to the experts who have the dogs best interests.
It’s done to stop the dog from being compromised by their tail being grabbed. The ear cropping is to allow the dog to have complete listening ability. And it can also appear aestheticly intimidating.
The tail will not be seen to be wagging. Because people who don’t understand k9 body language could take that behaviour of the dog wrong.
For example if the dog is wagging its tail. That dose NOT mean that the dog is in a playful mood. Many reasons for this procedure include the tail could be trapped

My dog is a mongrel and he has one ear up and the other is bent to the side. Thats the best of both worlds
