Very enjoyable video and I did the same thing with my D700 and my D300 in that I added focussing screens to both of them. I had many lenses left over from the film era which I installed dandelion chips in so they communicated with the new cameras. These old lenses were very sharp and they had a lot of character. I compared the 135 AIS to the 135 AF lens and I like the Bokeh of the 135 AIS lens much better. Ken Rockwell calls it the cream machine because the background is so beautiful. Even the 85 mm AIS lens has less chromatic aberration than the AFD lens that replaced it. So you’re right the older lenses in someways were better and had a nicer character rendering than the newer ones. I couldn’t afford the 28 1.4, but I do have the 28 F2 and I love that lens and I used it on my D3 hundred before I had a D700 as a normal lens. Now I have the Z5 and the Zfc and I have the 40 mm F2 lens which is similar to my old 28 F2 on the D300. It is a nice compromise between 50 and 35 mm lenses. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and appreciate the Candid review of Nikon sticking to an analogue style camera which now they have three of because a lot of people love those cameras during the film era so as a result, these cameras sold like hotcakes to people who wanted that same experience. Regards, Gerry.

Great video! At the end you took the words out of my mouth! So sick of photographers who are actually bloggers and you-tubers who seem obsessed with filming themselves talking about cameras. That is something that has cluttered the world of camera reviews. Some beautiful glass you have there! Thank you for discussing the focusing screen as well. I have had my Df for 9 years and have only shot a little with it because my soul is with film but your video inspires me to return to the Df in full manual mode. Thank you

The DF looks much sexier than the ZF. The DF produces amazing images

Yes you can put all the same lenses on the FTZ>Zf but you do not get AF on the AF-D lenses and Ai aperture control/data of the Ai/Ai-S lenses. The DF works natively with all F lenses as far back as the pre-Ai.

I just pulled the trigger and bought one online... took me a few months (watching almost all reviews I can found online) to get here. 😅

So, how is the image quality compared to the modern mirrorless full-frame ?

@@sauravbasu8805 I don't have a mirrorless camera, so I can't comment. I started with Canon 7D II (and planning to get a 100-400 f/4-5.6 for airshow), then 5D III, then my friend recommend me to try Nikon's manual lenses with adaptor rings, then I bought some cheap ones for fun until I realised that was a trap..

That was a wonderful video of your camera gear. I have the ZF and it's wonderful to shoot. I also have the D610, so I'm familiar with the autofocus system in the Df. For the autofocus, it does a good job. I understand the autofocus points are closer to the middle, but I still autofocus and recompose my shot with the D610. As technologically advance the ZF is, it's fun to return to a DSLR to take pictures with. Thank you for your video.
Update Nov. 12, 2024: I decided to buy the Df and I bought one used in good condition with 14,900 shutter actuations. I only had it for a few days, but so far I'm very impressed. I think I will enjoy using the Df with a few D lenses I have and shoot manually. It is an interesting camera and it was misunderstood when it was released. I wish it had the maximum shutter speed of 1/8,000 for my portrait lenses. I bought the black Df to match my Zf.

    Zavadskis,
Thank you! And such a wonderful collection of lenses.
I will be getting the Zf, but I will only use manual lenses(Nikon F-Mount), simply because that's all I have.
I currently have a few Voigtlander SLII-S lenses and 3 Zeiss Milvus lenses. Yes, the Zeiss Milvus lenses will look awkward, on the Zf but I don't really care, that's all I have and they are good lenses.Secondly, I want the Zf primarily for video, streaming and the occasional photography.
The Df is looking very appealing for photography, especially because it has the retro vibe, that I like.

Nice Video. I have that same camera, I got it two years ago, factory refurbished directly from Nikon with no clicks on the shutter. Mine is like brand new. I've noticed that since Nikon has made the F mount obsolete with the new Z mount, that the lenses are much much more affordable. That's a good feature.

Where did you get the split screen focus screen for the DF?

Wow… very nice! I got the same Df silver with the special edition 50 1.8G it came with, also the 28 1.4D, the 85 1.4D, and the 45 2.8D tilt shift.
Question: using the focusing mirror from FM3 to have a split screen in the viewfinder while using MF lenses, which is a great awesome idea, but how does it work and look when using it with AF lenses?
    Thanks!

Thanks for your thorough video. Can you talk more about replacing the focusing screen? Is the fm2/fm3a focusing screen a direct replacement or does it require some modification? Thank you and Happy New Year!

I just found your video from 9 years ago. It looks like the focusing screen is a direct replacement.

I was very tempted to get a DF, and I also looked at the Fz. If Nikon did an FTZ adapter with a focus motor for my AF-D lenses I would have bought one, but they don't and I think never will. I bought a D780 in the end.

Love df. I change the split screen, also. And shoot manual lens on it only. Great experience. I don't care video at all, so any body will video, I feel I am paying for sth I don't use. Nikon should create a DF2, seriously, smaller, better electronic, but leave the rest the same. That'll be perfect.

Hello,i have found one in a very good price but its missing this tiny plastic flash sync cap. Do you think it loses the weather sealing without this? And i cant find it anywhere to buy it.

Добрый вечер. Замена фокусировочного матового стекла сложная процедура и можно самому это сделать?
