Prefab Sprout was one of those few bands that proved pop music isn't all watered down, pandering claptrap. Paddy was a true songwriter, without a doubt.
Yet never gets name-checked among the general public. One of the best things about Prefab Sprout was at least in the 1980s they were a more intelligent, adult alternative to all the manufactured bubblegum teen pop (especially the Stock, Aitken & Waterman stuff) and faux, European Milli Vanilli-like dance-pop where people relied more on dancing and lip-syncing than artistic merit.
Great interview. He is so genuine and intelligent without pretensions. Always loved the sprouts, bought Jordan the cone back when it came out and listened to it constantly saw them live in 2000.
The seemingly cheery sunny disposition of Paddy always hides a darker, gritty more foreboding element in his songs. Pop on the surface maybe at first listen but he always hits you with gritty, edgy and often depressing reality.
I love the way he describes his music and life, hes so genuine and talented. Prefab sprout is a band I will always go back to, and I loved I trawl the megahurtz.
David Copson I get that, but a lot of people haven’t changed from their younger self. He looks a lot different from this and I think the look is interesting
This comment is for the future people looking back at this video, reading the comments and feeling a sense of sadness Paddy wasn't recognised as a brilliant songwriter, a genuine person...and a legend.
Paddy's comments about being on the road holding you back from songwriting mirror the sentiments expressed on the subject by another musical genius, Brian Wilson.
There was some good stuff in the 80s but PS from a songwriting perspective were way above. That comment from the interviewer about their live performance not living up to the records was a typical shit thing a critic would come out with. Paddy was a song writer first and foremost and a damn good one at that.

Martin Fry, Green, Nick Cave, Lloyd Cole.
Intelligent, articulate and honest with heaps of integrity!
I agree Paddy. You are one of the finest song writers and up there with the other greats!

@@dw89music73 Well it was not exactly EITHER Milli Vanilli OR Prefab Sprout, was it?
Bought the 1st 2 albums wish I'd have carried on 🤷♂️

this band is so damn good it's ridiculous
So true but Paddy should release much more
This guy seems genuinely happy to be sitting with Paddy, witch I think is rare because most interviewers seem to not know who he is.
Which witch are you talking of? Paddy is a wizard these days.
Which not witch
😨
One of the greatest pop songwriters ever, often too good for his audience
steady now
Steve McQueen is my favourite album by anyone and Crimson Red is marvellous. He's been the best many times
Great songwriter, from my home county ....I like the line about taking yourself somewhere.

seems like such a bright, eloquent and unassuming guy.
Padd= art and true emotion- 80s decade BEST ever- Paddy will always be a cool guy
Timeless music from a brilliant talented mind. So amazing and thanks for sharing with us.
Paddy has just given the world Crimson/Red, please don't miss it!
As for him, as adorable as always.
wish i could go back in time...i miss those years......and you did made the best record in 85...clap.clap.clap.....
This man is great, too top songwriter.
I don’t think anyone was aware just how talented this guy was and still is
He's a gentle version of Mark E.Smith with a light Geordie accent.
Hard to believe he looks like a wizard compared to then being clean shaven
It's called ageing.

Very intelligent and talented man...
What a wonderful interview.
Hope Paddy is Ok from a fellow Durham person
Love this band! Especially "I remember that " My favorite song 🎵
Nothing sounds as good as I remember that

How can someone be so good at writing songs, and at the same time so insightful into life and so eloquent? It's not an equitable world.
Aren't those two things consistent with each other?
genius
We need you Paddy, where are you!?

Song writing genius in my opinion.
Thanks!
He's got such a soft Irish voice it's very calming
It's an accent from north eaatern England. He has Irish ancestry, and there might be a bit in there, but really he has a county Durham accent.
Just a genius.
What was 'Super Channel', was it an old Sky or BSB channel? I was born in 81, maybe a touch too young to remember!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC_Europe
