  • This presentation is about how to align operations with strategy using the concept of an operating model. We will look particularly at the IT operating model and the impact of digital.
How can you test for alignment between operations and strategy?
What is a good operational design for IT?
How should digital initiatives be organised?
What is the role of IT in digital transformation?
A clear understanding of the elements of an IT operating model and how it links to IT strategy is an essential enabler for improving the performance of IT and for taking advantage of new IT paradigms such as DevOps, Agile, Cloud, and Digital Transformation.
This session will introduce a tool - the Operating Model Canvas - and explain how this tool links with the Business Model Canvas and show how it can help with the challenge of designing the right operating model for IT.
The session will also explore the impact of major trends like digitization; introduce some tests for assessing the alignment between strategy and operations; and define some design principles, such as “structure by value stream, unless the benefits of structuring by capability give significant performance gains”.
    Key Takeaways:
    1. A tool - the Operating Model Canvas - to help CIOs design their IT organizations
    2. A definition of the term operating model and how it fits with the term business model
    3. Tests for assessing alignment between strategy and operations perspectives, principles and observations about digital and IT
