The Shipping Containers - FINAL TOUCHES

- Our shipping container home is ALMOST DONE! This video captures so many of the final touches going into transforming these three small shipping containers into our first home. Lou and Audie (our friend visiting from Berlin to help with the final push of construction) finished the office including putting in the final mini-split, painting a ton of trim pieces, wrapping up the fireplace in the bedroom container, and so many other projects. I even roast a chicken and we have the farmer over for dinner who raised the animal.
During this build, there have been so many other parts of our lives that have transformed. Our son, Max, has grown so much this past year, our food choices are radically different than when we started, and our connection to this piece of land... well it's hard to explain how much more grounded we feel inhabiting this space. I know this is just the beginning of setting up our homestead, but it's definitely an accomplishment that we are going to be celebrating all winter long.

T’is the season when we suddenly appreciate our indoor surroundings. Although my abode is vastly different from yours, I think we share that increasing love for warmth and comfort as we move into the colder seasons. Suddenly, knowing that snow is inevitably on its way, we have been putting away outdoor equipment and clearing the yard and the garden. We, too, are wilderness dwellers who are now focusing on the woodpile, getting our studded winter tires on our trucks, tuning up snow clearing equipment, and constantly brushing the dried mud off our outdoor chore clothes… I’m pretty sure you know the feeling. Thanks for sharing today’s video. I always enjoy seeing what you’re up to in your neck of the woods. How are the mushrooms coming along?? Ⓜary🇨🇦🌲

Dear Dana, dear Lou, so far I've always been just a silent follower, but since a lot has changed for me on your channel recently, I would like to share my thoughts with you.
I followed you a few years ago mainly because of your lifestyle, the creative and vegan life, which inspired me a lot. Although I never want to sail and will probably never convert a van, I was always happy to see a new video from you. In addition to the content, I was particularly impressed by your filmmaking talent. It was just fun to see the world through your eyes, through your lens.
Something has changed for me in the last few months and after watching one of your videos, I often ask myself what the content is. Not only because I can't understand your transition from vegan to eating animals, but also because your videos no longer inspire me. Above all, I'm missing content and a cinematic concept. I often have the impression that there is no real idea for a film and that it is simply produced so that you can upload something. I often find the camera work to be very disturbing, especially when Dana is telling the story and constantly gets up while telling the story and takes the camera with her - for whatever reason. I miss your creative input, your everyday challenges that impressed and inspired me.
I would be interested to know what you plan to do with your channel and what content you would like to produce. Since I know what you're made of and what talent you bring, I thought I'd just leave you some feedback. Whether you accept it, think about it or ignore it is up to you.

It's so crazy to see how big Max has gotten already that he's helping by ripping off the tape all on his own. Where has all the time gone? He was like just yesterday. He was a tiny little baby. Now he's all grown up helping with projects
Wow --- Max's understanding and verbal skills are CRAZY!!! It's really a testament to parenting him as an active member of the "pack," and not just a "puppy."

You can't please all viewers all the time. Keep doing you & stay organic & honest! Love the show. Enjoyed seeing Max helping to pull the tape. I swear he said "I did it"😂. Very healthy. Fyi, like it or not, people have been hunting & raising animals for food since the begining of time for survival, especially in harsh climates were there is a short growing season. The human race prabably would have gone extinct long ago, if not.

The windows you painted! They look amazing! Were they vinyl? Has the paint held up well since you painted them? We’d like to do the opposite and paint our white windows black but have heard mixed reviews on painting vinyl windows so we haven’t explored the option much. Everything is looking beautiful and cozy. It’s a special feeling watching you in your nice kitchen while remembering your tiny van kitchen. I love the journey you both have been on the last number of years. ❤

Max will be running on his own before you know it. Max was enjoying those mud puddles, how will you handle bathing when it gets too cold outside? You have a great sledding hill, get ready to pull him up the hill on the sled. Nice you are getting to know your neighbors. You and Lou are such hard workers.
Dana --- try Spatchcocked chicken next time ... I spatchcock it (I use kitchen shears and just cut it up the back), put it in a container with lemon juice (and throw in the lemon carcasses), some rosemary, salt, pepper and maybe a little olive oil then let it marinate for a couple of days in the fridge. It's SO easy to roast it that way (open for crispiest skin) -- just tuck a few sprigs of rosemary under the wings/legs and make sure you salt and pepper it before it goes in the oven --- you'll love it.

Honestly I don't care what they eat. I'm not a vegan myself. But being a vegan channel for years, cooking a dead chicken for the first time and putting Max in a rooster costume in the very same episode. Thait's either the marketing fail of the century or a really dark joke on being vegan. I'm Austrian, I appreciate a dark joke. @@user-ly1wb3fv1p

How did your growing wild mushrooms 🍄 turn out? I only saw the video one time when you guys were spraying them, so I wondered what they looked like. I’ve never seen anybody grow mushrooms before. I was hoping to see them again when they were in full bloom, but I forgot to ask, earlier. I could google a video of it, but it’s not near as fun 😊‼️

What is that adorable flooring and where did you get it?!!
When roasting chicken it is best to cook it at 400° just oiled a bit and uncovered to sear it. Then add spices and stick cut up tomato, carrot, onion and garlic in the cavity for color and flavor. Fresh rosemary too if you have it (a must). Then roast covered at 350° basting every 30 minutes. Remove cover for last 20 minutes to crisp up skin some more. Always let the cooked chicken rest out of the oven for 15 minutes too. I've been roasting chicken for 45 years. Great leftovers too!

@@WildWeRoam you won't be disappointed. Of course there is always deep gratitude to the chicken's generous sacrifice. Roasted chicken is not an everyday meal either except for the leftovers in tacos or with a salad. O haf same reaction as you the first chicken I roasted. It came out more steamed as you noted in this episode. You're a good cook so it won't be long til you find your own "Sunday Chicken"
The chicken did not „sacrifice“ herself generously, her life was taken.. I believe it is a good thing that IF you choose to kill animals for food, you should do this with the utmost respect, but speaking about the animal „sacrificing“ itself or „giving her life“ just sounds very misleading…

Yes, it is confusing, but some people are really judgemental towards vegans / people who do not eat meat. Some people already feel offended / attacked if someone is just mentioning, that they do not eat meat...

Yeah I was also thinking if that rooster-costume for their kid straight after cooking a dead chicken is being some kind of macabre humour…
As many people have pointed out: I am not even vegan but watching you prepare the carcass of a dead chicken was truly hard to watch and not a pleasant experience that I want to renew!
Also, it is almost hilarious, in a very macabre way, to see that you dressed your son as a… chicken, after cooking a dead chicken. You are very desensitised, aren’t you…
And last thing, if you are forced to eat meat to be friends with your farmer/ hunter neighbours, that tells a lot about them. Very kind and tolerant people, it looks like. As if you couldn’t just eat potatoes while they eat their chicken… What a terrible hypocrite excuse. Oh and nobody is forcing you to slaughter and skin your own chickens as clearly you are surrounded by local sustainable (probably not even organic though…) farmers around you that would happily sell you some eggs and a bit of chicken here and there. But no, really, you have decided to committing to being full-on carnivores from now on and even show us the horror of a dead headless bird… a little bit unhinged if you ask me.

It is totally up to you what you eat, and naturally also what you show on the channel. And I understand that you are excited about your transformation.. But it is also very sad if you keep up regularly showing how you prepare dead animals, because we will not be able to watch your videos anymore 😞 In general I think that eating meat is one thing, and a personal choice, and it is great if you at least source your animals from places where conditions for animals are better, but I am a bit surprised that you are basically hyping meat consumption now on your channel, because ultimately this will cause more animals to suffer - particularly as the majority of people will not have access to local farmers etc. But all this being said, I am just sad if I can not watch your channel anymore without seeing those - for me - quite disgusting close ups of a dead bird.

10ish people wrote under their not vegan anymore video that they abandoned vegan diet as well so now they assume we're all on the same path. Pretty sad. I found it quite provocative what Dana was doing and also interesting on the psychological level how you can turn around like this and really enjoy it to the fullest. Like Lou said: he thinks they will still eat 99% vegan. So this is how this looks like...
yeah, I'm very puzzled.... I hated the last video comments with how many people talked about how they abandonned that diet... it felt like a major publicity on "vegan lifestyle is not sustainable" As someone who has very few vegans around me, I found my people through a lot of RUclipsrs and am very sad to see that Lou and Dana aren't part of it anymore.
I know you’re not vegan any more and it’s your choice, but a heap of your audience are and I really hated watching you prepare the carcass of the dead chicken. It was way too confronting for me.

Great learning experience on how to be more tolerant of others beliefs. I’m not vegan, but I didn’t take any offense to any content before, nor do I feel the need to EVER comment in a way that would make these amazing people feel bad for their choices.
@@Julie_Truly_in_KY at least for me this has nothing to do with not being tolerant. It is definitely up to them, and the last thing I want is for them to feel bad for their choice of what they eat. But if a channel that until a couple of weeks ago was a safe space in terms of not being confronted with dead animals in this way, I think it is absolutely fine to comment on this aspect on the video, which was quite a radical change in this regard, - not on the choice of diet itself.
