Just found this, so pleased I did. Thank you for your constant uploads of excellence. It's also great to see the original date of broadcasting, it helps me to put things in context - I can't think of another word. Thank you so much and I am delighted your numbers continue to grow, you deserve to soar. 😊❤
Episode 1: Great stuff in excellent picture quality! Surprisingly good fencing scenes - not easy to make convincing. In one scene I felt sure it was a professional stuntman doing the fencing, but when he turned around it really was Richard O’Sullivan! Amazing!
O'Sullivan brought a lovely touch to the swordsmanship, slipping into a sort of dead-eyed zen during the exchanges, maybe it was just his focus on the rehearsed sequences but as a kid I took it as a distinctive feature of the character
Great to watch :) I've read that the original Dick Turpin was indeed a highwayman in London, but he was never a romantic hero at the time. The romance and drama only started when someone wrote a fantasy book based on him. But it makes a great story, and makes one yearn for the olden days !
Totally true. He was in fact a terrible, nasty person unlike this lovely portrayal of him. Many of his acts were actually other highwaymen's deeds and so most of his 'life' is not true. I suspect if they did an accurate portrayal of him in film, many of us would not recognise him.
Dear Alan, Stand and deliver. Reminds me one of the funniest scenes in the film Tom Jones. The highway man says "Stand and deliver". The woman in the coach replied"Stad and deliver? My good man do I look like a midwife to you?"
When Richard O’Sullivan proved he was much more than a comedic actor as demonstrated in MAN ABOUT THE HOUSE and ROBIN’S NEST plus the later MY GIRL AND ME
Love this! Love Willoughby (Rupert Frazer - what an actor!) A bit reminiscent of Scarecrow by Disney, but this is more spoofy and lighthearted. Thank you, Vintage British Television!
I lived in the area in Hertfordshire UK where Dick Turpin was supposed to have lived and robbed. I used to eat at the ‘Witches Inn Pub’ where he was supposed to have enjoyed his pints. It is a lovely old pub that takes you right back into 1705 as it is a very old style pub with a of original items. Had some great evenings there.
Mant thanks for the upload, I loved this series back in the day, and I haven't seen it since. I always wondered if it inspired Adam Ant, his Kings of the Wild Frontier album came out late 1980.
Why can't RUclips just stick a load of adverts before uploads start rather than 20 seconds in then 5 minutes after that? Spoils what you're trying to watch.
Dick Turpin operated in and around Hounslow Heath and the Royal Windsor Forest. This also included the area around Bracknell, because the centre of the RWF was just to the north of modern day Bracknell..! My question is then, how on earth could he have been operating in Bristol and Dover...? Unless of course it was the coaches leaving London, heading for those destinations. He certainly wouldn't be able to attack both of them..! Also why would they take an accused man 200 miles up the country to try them...???
I remember aged 16 being amazed that someone on the telly had my name 'Michael Deeks' (playing Swiftnick) Annoyingly I was named 'Michael' by my parents and then called 'Sam' for the rest of my life with the result that any phone call these days asking for 'Michael Deeks' is usually bureaucratic bad news :D
Episode 2: Three years for stealing two apples! Just think how many crimes today could be eliminated completely if courts applied similar severe MINIMUM sentences for driving offences, burglary, assault etc!
In reality the real Dick Turpin was a vile, wicked man who did not deserve the romantic view that this series portrays. But it's life, many of Turpin's so called deeds were done by other highwaymen of the time and he would often run rather than face the consequences of his actions....But I love Richard O Sullivan and I forgive it. Apt that his actual name can also be shortened to Dick.....
I'm the dandy highwayman who you're too scared to mention,I spend my cash on looking flash and grabbing your attention, The devil take your stereo and your record collection (oh-oh), The way you look you'll qualify for next year's old age pension ...STAND AND DELIVER... YOUR MONEY OR YOUR LIFE.. HAWH!
In what way isn't it accurate ? The real Dick Turpin London highwayman was never a romantic hero, so the character isn't accurate anyway. But it's a great fantasy !
@gaz8891 Without checking all the details, I know the producers set it after the period in which the real Dick Turpin reigned. Set between 1739 and 1740. The real life Turpin was hanged in 39.
I used to love watching this on a Saturday as a kid........such humble TV, which was captivating.
you nd me both
good ol days, music was better as well
Thank you so much. I enjoyed this series way back when it was first shown, and it is just as enjoyable now.

Finally. Something good on youtube.
A blast from the past. Brings back good memories. Thanks for posting.
The days when ITV really produced something worth watching.
I love the energy of the fight scenes! Feels like they are actually fighting for their lives, not just dancing around

Would of been better if when turning around it really was Dick Turpin!
O'Sullivan brought a lovely touch to the swordsmanship, slipping into a sort of dead-eyed zen during the exchanges, maybe it was just his focus on the rehearsed sequences but as a kid I took it as a distinctive feature of the character

I read Dick Turpin was a murderer and a rapist as well as being a highwayman
No he wasn't a hero at the time
That crap came well over a hundred years after his death.
Totally true. He was in fact a terrible, nasty person unlike this lovely portrayal of him. Many of his acts were actually other highwaymen's deeds and so most of his 'life' is not true. I suspect if they did an accurate portrayal of him in film, many of us would not recognise him.
Nobody says how much fun it was to see the bad guys get what they deserved from Dick Turpin
Terrific period feel and who would have thought Richard had so many hidden talents!
Hidden talents? You do know that he's not actually a highwayman?
Love the opening
There was a Dick Turpin pub in Hampstead but I think its gone now. LOVED this show as a kid,
RIP Christopher Benjamin

In reality, Turpin was the scum of the earth. But it makes a great subject for a TV show. Thanks for sharing.
Mythology and the transformation of various images in the history of States everywhere.

Dick turpin had no center of operations what so ever
❤❤❤

You need to love fencing.
Reminds me of Starmer

Episode 2: Three years for stealing two apples!
Just think how many crimes today could be eliminated completely if courts applied similar severe MINIMUM sentences for driving offences, burglary, assault etc!
There was a young lad who was transported to Australia for pawning a library book.
Peter Lynch ,RIP , got 2 years for waving a banner and shouting at a police dog . Be very carefull what you wish for !
None.
It didn't then either.
@@ianperry9914That man was ki***d by a dictator. The same one guilty of allowing depravity to prevail since his days in CPS. Corrupt & abominable.

Richard O'Sullivan totally miscast.

Classic Adam Ant!!
I thought he stole lupins.
👍🏻
Not bad this but not historically accurate but entertaining.
It was never written as to be historically accurate. It's set just after the 'real' Turpin was hanged.
In what way isn't it accurate ? The real Dick Turpin London highwayman was never a romantic hero, so the character isn't accurate anyway. But it's a great fantasy !

spiker can't say 'one' ie WUN.
How bad was that?
-exstreem boring to watch
Play nice
Some seriously poor acting.
Tessa Wyatt said he was the best Dick.
She was utterly inexperienced of Dicks
Some of the worst acting I've ever seen. 😂but it's ok
Dick Turnip
Where is the rest is that it
