Thank you very much for your informative and easy to follow videos. My three-year-old daughter and I started to catch bugs about six months ago when she showed an interest in them. We printed off a list with pictures of all of the bugs found in our area and slowly take ticked them off. The one thing that has eluded us, this entire time has been catching a monarch butterfly.. until yesterday. These videos have helped me have a little bit of confidence in being able to preserve him as the moment was incredibly special and I’d love to keep it in a small frame for her to look at when it passes on. Thank you so much from Australia.
I found a female monarch yesterday on the ground of a parking lot. I thought I had driven over it and killed it, but it was already stiff so now I know it had been dead for some time already thanks to your video series. These videos might be 7 years old, but they were super instructive and validated the information I found in other videos I watched but that were made by channels not associated to scientific institutions. Thank you!
If you mean those glass boxes, it'll be the same thing as mounting them in to the shadow box, isn't it? Just glue all of them to the back glass, rather than the wood backing of the shadow box. @@__-pl3jg, that's called a thumbnail, not a "click bait". Why would you need a demo on how to mount them inside other things? It's going to be the same process as described in this video, just with a different shaped container. The hard part is getting the butterfly to take the shape you want. After that just glue it into anything you want...
I live in New Zealand and recently acquired 4 butterflies: Yellow Admiral, Monarch, Zizina and a common White and thanks to you I now know how to preserve them, thanks!
Can you tell us more about the glue stick for the shadow box? Are you referring to a hot or cold glue stick rather than an office supply glue stick? If hot/cold glue stick, did you melt a little bit of it to get the butterfly to stick or use another adhesive? It's a bit hard to see. Thanks for the video, learning a lot!
looks to me like an unheated hotglue stick. She probably glued it on there with some other glue. It seems she merely used a glue stick because it's fairly transparent and therefore less noticable than wood dowels. Not because it's glue. Personally, I wouldnt try heating the glue, because it'll probably run and ruin the clean look of the display. Just use some other glue than the actual hot glue stick.
Years ago I bought a butterfly in a shadowbox but I would like to place it in a glass dome on a little branch. What is the best way to attacht the butterfly to the brench?
The butterfly will fade if kept in direct sunlight. If kept away from direct sun it should maintain its colour. Most butterflies will not rot if dried properly, some moths may need extra preparation because they have bigger bodies. Dried butterflies can be very fragile so be very careful while handling. To start collecting you can either go outside and find already deceased butterflies or buy specimens online. If you plan on collecting fresh butterflies and killing them yourself, please check your local laws on butterfly protection and insect collection, incase there are any especially rare or endangered butterflies or insects in your area that you shouldn't collect.
I found a white moth today on my car in the rain. I could tell his wings were damaged because he was stuck to my car from the rain. I had him crawl into a wrapper i found in my car and I took him home, he just chilled in my passenger seat on the wrapper. After some research of trying to consider if I should release him back into nature while it’s still raining or keep him until he dies naturally, I decided to keep him in a mason jar with a branch, mint leaves and sugar water put into a lego. He can’t fly anymore and the thought of him being eaten made me so sad. When he passes in a few days (because moths only live 8-10 days in the summer) want to frame him because he’s so pretty. Thank you for this informative video series :)
Today i framed two butterflies & while I knew they shouldn't be on direct, strong sunlight I went out to take photos, but I soon noticed that their wings warped like crazy! I wonder if the light could have been the true cause or if there's something else I'm missing. I dried them for 2 weeks.
Great video, did you glue the butterfly to the segment of glue or is the pin holding it in there? Otherwise you've helped me start framing my own butterflies:)
I want to have mounted butterflies in my room, but I also have plants and aquariums, so it's a little bit humid in there. how much humidity is too much?
I just bought 7 sets of 81 butterflies mounted in riker mounts from a Facebook sales page and they’re from Malaysia. Can I move them out of their frames and put them in the shadow boxes you mentioned, or even acrylic frames?
So I found a big beautiful polyphemus moth at my work here in Houston. Some people told me it had been dead for months, but when I found it was undamaged. It has some dust bunnies stuck to it though. I plan on displaying it in a cedar cigar box with a glass lid. Any tips removing the lent from it's body?
hey nice video mam can u tell me plss i got three butterflies today they r alive but it know butterfly can't live more den two or three days how can i store plss advice
Where can I get a DECENT butterfly, Erin??????? All the ones I purchased from EBay crumble and fall apart even tho I follow your directions...........;)
I have a very important question for anyone that can answer this I want to make some earrings and jewelry with dry insects but I want to know if you need a permit to do that this will be my first time doing this and I've researched a lot do one thing I can't seem to find is if you need a permit or not for this I don't want to do this if it's illegal in any way.
Very helpful video! Thank you! It inspired me to try and frame butterflies in watch glass dishes. That way you can see them from both sides. Instructions on my blog here: my-eclectic-diy.com/decoration/unusual-way-frame-butterflies
you do not need chemicals to relax your butterflies and you touch the butterfly wings with your fingers your only suppose to touch the back sides so the pigmentation of the butterfly dont come off wow
you're the worst troll in history, kid. She's quite clearly very knowledgable as well as employed by an actual musuem. As opposed to some random RUclips lurker. At least make your comments somewhat believable. No one has access to 100 butterflies, and even if they did, they would rush through them at that pace.
This is soooo helpful, I’ve watched 5 other videos on how to spread butterflies and your was the most straight forward and easy! Thank you!!

I think this has been the best series on how to mount butterflies and moths. Very much appreciated. Thank you.

Can u do a demo on how to mount them in glass domes?
I would love to see this too.
Yeah, your click bait shows a double glass frame. Id like to know how thats done....glue perhaps?

Does the butterfly changes in color overtime? Does it rot? Freeze? How do I start collecting ?

Hey love, Thank You for all the lessons. As for the glue. I ordered yesterday a clear silicone glue. Will that work just the same as the glue stick?
