- If you have ever tried to mount a butterfly or moth specimen you will quickly learn just how fragile they are and how easy it is to ruin your valuable specimen. In this video we will show you some tips on how to rehydrate a butterfly or moth specimen and show you how to keep it from getting moldy. It is a sensitive and delicate process but with the right tools, you will be successful in curating a butterfly collection of your own. We will rehydrate a beautiful female specimen of Speyeria idalia, the regal fritillary that was sent to me from Minnesota. One mistake I made was not to put chlorocresol in the rehydration chamber and I left the specimen in a little too long and the abdomen began to grow mold. This is easily fixed by placing an anti-fungal chemical agent into the chamber such as chlorocresol. We must be careful when mounting a butterfly specimen because if not properly hydrated, the wings, antennae and legs easily snap off. We hope you learn something from the video!

So glad I watched this video. The tendon cutting is a great technique that I will have to try sometime. Maybe it's been a best kept secret? ha ha. Thanks for sharing! The thicker body specimens, like Nymphalids, have been a difficult task rehydrating for me. Even after injecting the thorax with warm water. I use mothballs to prevent mold. Once again thanks for sharing, I learned something today.
Fantastic!!! That’s what our channel is all about!!!! Thanks for watching
David, thankyou so much for this. I have had so many problems trying to set relaxed charaxinae in the past due to their strong wing tendons. I am definitely going to try your technique! If it's of any use to you, mold on the abdomen can also be fixed/removed by gently brushing with denatured alcohol (we call it methylated spirits in the UK) using an artists paintbrush.
Excellent!!!! I’ll give that a try with the methylated spirits.
I have another video where I show the tendon cutting in much better detail. I’d suggest checking it out. It’s called “Doing surgery on a moth…”
I've always used naphthalene moth balls as a mould deterrent in relaxing chambers. For me, they are sold at the supermarkets which makes it easier to get than chlorocresol but I have recently order some to try out.
Great!!! Has naphthalene done the job??
@@keysmoths5336 so far it has. I'd certainly recommend it. There was nothing to prompt me to switch to cresol, I just thought I'd give a go for sake of it, something a lot of people used so I included some in my last order of pins.
I missed this reply. Yes the napthalene worked perfectly. I love using chlorocresol but I go back to the napthalene when I either run out or I forget to take it on a trip.
Very good information, thanks.
Awesome!!!
Thank you, Sir. Question....how much chlorocresol would you need for a container that size and how do you dissolve it? (I got lucky and got 50gm of this in an antique shop).
Very cool!!! Not much. Like a teaspoon. You don’t need to dissolve it. As long as it fumigates the container it will stop mold from growing
Where do I purchase the chlorocresol? I’d like your recommendation for a supplier!
The supplier I bought from is out of business. I still have enough to last me a few years. I looked it up and found it for sale fairly easy to find. Lmk if you find a supplier that you like
Hey David
