  • I spent a few days in the Ecuadorian rainforest with Dr. Susan Finkbeiner as she uses one of the longest butterfly nets in the world to study some amazing species. Come along for the adventure, and stick around to hear her talk about her life as a scientist.
    Filmed by Danny Hoyt and Phil Torres in Pimpilala, Ecuador. Filmed on Canon 1DX Mark II, 120fps during slow motion interlude.

    This guy needs a show on Discovery instead of ‘Ice Road Truckers’. Please bring good nature shoes back to television!

      My Earth shoes are still my faves. So, has anyone solved the mystery of whatever happened to Jungle Guy?

    That blue Morph butterfly was transcendentally beautiful - the way it opened and closed its wings before taking flight - exquisite .

    Whats the recapture rate of butterflys?

    • @susanfinkbeiner7741
      @susanfinkbeiner7741 7 лет назад +5

      Depends on the individual, when they are territorial you're almost certain to find them in the same place every day!

    • @garrettbeisel666
      @garrettbeisel666 7 лет назад

      Cool, I didn't know they could be territorial. Thanks
      And how long does the mark stay? I have marked hummingbirds like that, because I couldn't band them, but the colour is gone their next molt. How long would it stick around on their wings? Is there anything more long term?

    • @susanfinkbeiner7741
      @susanfinkbeiner7741 7 лет назад +3

      The marker stays on butterfly wing scales essentially forever! Even after a butterfly dies you can preserve the marked wings, and the marked number will stay there.

  • @TheCortymast

    I always thought that you are not supposed to touch the wings of Lepitoptera, because you would scrub some of their scales off, thus hinder their ability to fly. Is this just a myth? Are they okay with being touched when handled carefully?
