Great retrospective, Nocturne is so much fun, I like the dreary atmosphere and the gameplay is up there. It's surprising that Nocturne took so long to come out, SMT2 was released in 1994 and Nocturne came out in Japan in 2003, almost a decade.
Not just that, the next mainline game after that also took a while after that too, Strange Journey came out in 2009 and was meant to be mainline but then they changed their mind, and SMT4 took all the way until 2013 to be made. 4 Apocalypse came out in 2016, but then SMTV took all the way until 2021 to come out. It's interesting how long mainline titles take.
It's fascinating how spinoffs took over for a while. I don't have stats but they were very popular in Japan, Devil Summoner even had its own TV show. The developers gave the mainline games some attention too, they got a lot of remasters on modern consoles at the time, like SMT 1,2 and If on the PSX. A lot of these games have mainstay additions too, like more fiends, new angel design that was used in Nocturne, Metatron etc. People don't realize that the fiend theme in Nocturne actually orginated in SMT: If on the PSX! I wonder if Nocturne had some development issues too and was rushed. Digital Devil Saga has a lot of mechanical improvements over Nocturne.
I really like how Nocturne is an homage to SMT 1 and 2, it has a lot of callbacks and music from the older games re-done. The protagonist is amazing and gets unique skills which we don't really see again until SMT V. The bosses and fiend bosses are great in Nocturne too. I'll still say it, Nocturne is the only game that actually does fiend boss fights correctly! In all other games the fiends are 1/256 chance which is horrible, or in Twisted Tokyo which is an awful dungeon, or they're paid DLC in SMT V.
Dante being in the game is so silly but it's probably the only cameo I actually enjoy out of any media. It fits so well, you play a demon and Dante is a demon hunter, and both were extremely well known PS2 franchises at the time, it genuinely felt amazing playing both on release and I like how they even put in Dante's fake coin in the game. If you play DMC2 before Nocturne you'll learn in the story that Dante has a double-sided coin. He always wants to always help people, but he doesn't want to be taken advantage of, so he pretends as if he lost a bet to help people. If you know this coming into Nocturne, you can recruit him for free because you know he has a double sided coin on him. It's just so neat how he's a boss fight, you fight him and talk to him several times etc.
I think you're right about Dante's dialog being a bit off, this game came out when only Devil May Cry 2 was out and his character is not as established as it is now. This depiction of him in Nocturne is pretty much how he acts in DMC2, which isn't bad though I'm the only person who finds some value in that game. I like how he's so aloof! It's better on the original release because he was free with the North American release.
15:40 I like the dungeon designs and puzzles so much, it really is still a dungeon crawler but in 3D, I like the symmetry and the interactions between floors like teleports and pitfalls, I know I'm in the minority but they really make you think and it feels great when you figured it out.

I feel like with reasons that Chiaki and Isamu get are trauma responses, Isamu gets owned and kidnapped and the player is unable to get him out of problems and he gets out on his own, Chiaki sees a world where power rules and also she gets attacked by the manikin guy who wears faces of other manikin, and she probably considered him "ugly" for that and wanted to get rid of "ugly" people I have a theory that the whole of the vortex world is intended to get people to these awful mindsets and awful reasons.
As for the angels deciding to side with her, honestly the 3 reasons would get the same results for YHWH, (one of the later SMT games does say that YHWH wants either law or chaos to win) the freedom and true demon endings are ones that actively goes against YHWH's plans. And yeah the series generally sides for the neutral endings, most SMT fans (Well, fans of pretty much everything in general.) have pretty bad media literacy.
Also Devil summoner and soul hackers does at least have different designs for some of the demons and a few demons from there haven't been seen outside of those games.

wait she got attacked by sakahagi? when did that happened? I have no memory of that happening. In any case I feel as though that could have worked as a reason for why they acted like that but it doesn't feel natural like we need to see those breaking down moments to transition into it.

@@thetruewisegamer He says "oh I can't believe that girl got away from me!" and she's missing an arm in the cutscene where she fuse with Gozu-Tennoh which is why she has a weird arm, granted the game doesn't focus on the fact that she's missing an arm and its easy to miss.

6:00 wasn't it the other way around? hikawa and his cult wanted to remake the world since they already had their reason in mind, yuko was along for the ride as the maiden. then later she changed her mind and decided she just wants the world to go back to how it was.

Yes I sort of made an error, but I would argue it only by forgetting to place more emphasize on hikawa part on this because without yuko he wouldn't be able to summon his god and/or jumpstart the conception since he require her by his own admission.( though we aren't sure what he needed in order to do so but eh). that and beside she doesnt care anyway so I would argue she at least complicit in the act. in any-case thank for commenting this to me since I should have caught it early on and redo the line to make that point more clear.
