  • A detailed discussion followed by a live performance of an Egyptian folk song on the Adungu Harp of Uganda - almost identical to the ancient Egyptian Arched Harp, last played some 3500 years ago!
    The Adungu Harp of Uganda is strikingly similar to an example of a suviving ancient Egyptian arched harp preserved in the British Museum this ancient Egyptian harp is made of wood, inlaid with bone and faience.
    From the tomb of Thauenany, Western Thebes,
    The Tombs of the Nobles, New Kingdom, XVIII Dynasty, 1534-1296 B.C.
    For all details on the amazing instruments of the ancient world still being played in Africa today, please see the detailed "Historical Research" section of my website:

    Many thanks for watching!

    Amazing, love these videos! Anyways the only criticism I have would be:
    1. Try and make the song a little bit louder and
    2. Work on the tremolo picking at 4:33.
    Other than that these videos are very great, informative and educational and you're great at playing all these instruments.

    The Egyptian origin of this instrument is doubted by some researchers. Bowed harps are fairly wide spread in west and central subsaharan Africa and may be indigenous (possibly derived from the native musical bow) . Unlike the Egyptian and Mesopotamian harp, the Adungu and many other central African harps are played with strings inward.

    We play this instrument in our Ugandan band 'ACD arts'. Here's my friends band playing them in uganda. search youtube lJsnwkh15jk . You can see they come in a all different sizes, different tunings too, although always based around the major or pentatonic scale. Come and see our gig at Jamboree in Limehouse London, on 9th of november 2012! we will be playing many of these songs but with more dancing and drumming too :)

    Hi Michael Levy. I've owned one too from Uganda, exactly like yours, and I'll like to know if ever you have some tablatures or anything else from which i could learn how to tune the strings and play traditional musics as well. Thanks in advance

    The Alur are Nilotic, linguistically, related to the Nubians.

    Mr Levy! I have a few questions! What is this little harp strung with? Are all the strings the same gauge??

    • @MichaelLevyMusic
      @MichaelLevyMusic  4 года назад +1

      The strings seemed to be some sort of natural fibre - rather rope like. They were all the same gauge. Regrettably, I had to dispose of this harp, after the lovely calf skin soundboard become infested by moth larvae :(

      Michael Levy that’s sad to hear! It was beautiful. I have a small 19 string harp and I’ve been looking for a good source of string, but I don’t want to use nylon or gut-I’ve settled on silk, but silk strings are expensive and hard to find without custom ordering. I thought I could use a strong silk cord in one or two sizes, which is why I asked about the gauges. I’ve tried linen and it sounded nice so I wanted to experiment. I thought fine silk cord would work well for my purposes, but I’m not sure what size to use.
