Hey Mike! I'm up here in Sacramento, trying to stay warm. Always enjoy your videos.
This was an absolutely excellent video !!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Mike out of probably a hundred of your videos that I've seen you hit the head on the nail in every issue. In the 60's 70's we didn't have the tool that are available today but the work turned out in the shop was every bit as good even better. A jitter bug sander was state of the art. Bondo was crude. Lots of hard sanding. No feather fill. Wires were soldered & taped. It worked. Pawn shop tools. No internet. Apprenticeships. Its all doable on a dime. Just got to do it. Great video brother. Maybe your best! Thanks for you time and effort in these amazing videos.
Love your channel Mike, it’s a great inspiration as I learn to do a myriad of things on my bus!
Yes times are hard , just keep on going . If you’re doing something you love to do no one can stop you .
I think if you want to build on the cheap start watching Mike and the many many other creators saves me money, and you need to get involved. Go to shows and meet-ups join a local club and get to know the community. It's a long game to build cheap. The community is so generous with time knowledge and many many other resources that will save you money, stop you from wasting money, and have realistic expectations for the project. The community in general won't want to deal with flippers, but if you're a real enthusiast and committed to their cars or projects, the community loves to help. As a mature vw owner I hoard everything seldom sell anything but if I do I would rather take less money and know my part or project goes to a person that has meaning to me.
Loved working in a body shop, learned a lot about all cars.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and expertise. Happy to see you are back at it and I look forward to every video.
Hi 👋🏻 Mike. Hope you’re well 😊 Always love the videos I’ve watched and these chats are reality on rest lives with real people 👍🏻🏴
i found you recently when i was searching around for what else i should do the the double cab truck i bought that had a cam in it and came across a video from years ago where you talked about running equal length merged headers, porting the heads, and how dual 40's are too much. Then i saw you say the same exact thing in a recent video. So i figured you know what you're talking about, so i got me a single 36 weber, ported my heads, and got equal length merged headers with a quiet pack. I am getting absolutely gorgeous performance out of it and it sounds great.
Hey Mike, your past few videos have been incredible. Sticking home on a lot of levels. I grew up in Redondo loving the VW beach scene. Your Maine story hit home literally. I now live in Kennebunk Maine and my son lives in OOB. You painting flames and specialty hit home with my Dad moved to LA to start up the west coast location forthe Metalflake Paint company. All custom and standards in automotive paints. Still driving my 65 SO42 and have a 61 bug and 71 Squareback waiting for your quidance. Keep up with the helpful videos and recommendations. Cheers!
you bet....Maine is awesome in the summer.....Brutal in the winter. My Cousins live up there.
Love your vids Mike! Learned a lot from you and your how to videos/builds. Please stick to VW building! We need more of it! 👌
Awesome story about Kenny. I remember him when he had a notchback.
I’m glad I was able to enjoy this hobby when it was still affordable. The price of parts has taken a lot of the fun out of our hobby….to think $6k-$8k for an engine….ughhh
yea you need to build your own for sure today. Car Craft Egning kits are the best deals out there. and still $$$
Keep it up! There are a lot of newer VW people that look up to people like you! We appreciate your knowledge and help! So Thank you!!!!
You truely are a giant amongst men,I havefollowed you from the beggining, maybe publish biography, crowd fund a vehicle,I hope things turn a corner soon❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
those 3 resources are the best today IMO.....No more Sears.
People don't understand how our generation worked ourselves to the bone and have nothing to show for it because of the economy and inflation and things of that nature. I let go of my hobbies and sacrificed everything just to raise my five children. Nowadays I'm retired and living on the nothing I get from SSDI and I'm trying to figure out how to budget the dune buggy I've been Blessed enough to get
swap meets. Yard sales, Probably one of the only cheap resources.....I personally have always had 2 or 3 jobs or businesses.
@@Mikefngarage there isn't very many swap meets out here in Michigan and it seems like yard sales are going by the way of the dodo. After all everybody just sells things online nowadays
Harbor Freight has come a long way. HF warranty is no questions asked to. Their new jacks and stands are amazing quality for the money.
The first time I watched you was the bit you did on Earl Schieb. That was so funny, I watched it more than once. i had a 68 lincoln painted there for like a hundred some bucks. I am from WIsconsin. I wish I was near you, I would love to sit down and have a cup of coffee with you. God bless your coming year.
Fixing old cars used to be affordable...VDUBS were cheap economy cars....now its ridiculous...
😂 smog yep. Parents moved from Pomona to Arkansas in 1971 because of the smog. One of the best things they did for me and my brothers.
Im currently working on a 63’ bug I recently bout from my father. He did all his own bodywork on it back in the late 90’s. Had it painted and he did all the interior. I’m currently converting to 12 volt, and have a full air ride kit for it. The hard part for me is figuring out the wiring. I’m doing all my research. Even with all the wiring diagrams online it’s still confusing. Long story short, it is people like you that give me the inspiration to continue and figure it out. I apologize for the long rant! ✌️🙌
Mike great video I like the way you think, that is the way I feel, hopefully we will see a change in California. I guess we will see I always love my VW and have 3 to work on but money is tight so they to sit in the back yard waiting, keep up the great videos
Mike for president 2028!!!! Okay I’ll settle for CA governor. Go Mike go Mike!!!
Great wisdom here. I will show this to my 14 year old son. Any vw off road tips?
Things are much different nowadays in the car world in general
Keep preaching Mike, I agree with you 100% on everything.
Kids nowadays don’t want to do any of that. They’re too busy on their phones and computers and asking their parents to pay for everything. No one mows lawns or does the newspaper routes (I understand newsprint is mostly gone as well) or works to get their spending money.
so true my friend.
I had full Craftsman tool sets as a kid too
got mine at about 10 years old. Maybe younger. I cant remember.
@Mikefngarage yeah I had a full tool box by then . Mind you I'm also a Michigan boy so I live by the motor City standards and that means everybody wrenches
Click! I'll keep commenting because I've learned so much from you. Great topic.
Great video Mike! On point with the problems around here.
Great video!!!!
32:00 Plus, when you charge up, it'll take you 1 to 2 hours, and you'll expend that charge in an hour or less. Not practical for heavy commercial vehicles. Plus, it'd definitely kill a business, because even an hour lost is a huge financial loss.
Tools and passion help tremendously!
CT, should mention you in his videos, If you want to see someone finish his projects, to check out your channel.
He is a good guy....Really... A super friend..
@@vintage76vipergreenBeetle Mike could help CT with his roadblocks and get projects finished. BTW, whatever happened to Rusty?
@@TC-Henry CT, sold Rusty a while back. Hopefully the new owner will get Rusty back on the road again.
Budget builds are getting extremely hard to do these days. This inflation is just out of control and putting a major hurting on everyone. In 2019 when the tariffs got raised up just killed my buying fixing and flipping these vws. On top of that we’re getting ready to go through that yet again now. Your right though about the only way to help your budget is just learn to do the work yourself and have a realistic long term plan and stick with it. As far as tools go my harbor freight ratchets have held up WAY better than my snap on ones. I actually prefer the Pittsburgh ones over the snap on for the overall feel. My duralast sockets have held up 10 times better than my snap on ones too.
There are studies out now showing that supercharging does NOT degrade EV batteries.
Well there are people who have done nothing but supercharge and they have serious degradation....Plus would you want to pay the labor cost of 1.5 hours for 4 people (employees) to charge the batteries on a truck every day.....Who is paying for that?
ALL batteries degrade faster when you rapid-charge them. I'd like you include some reference to these studies you refer to.
100% with you!! I just hate it when a rich politician tells poor people what it’s like to be poor 😐. Who owns the federal reserve is my research project these days Mike, better days ahead buddy 😊
yes sir.....Kamala was truly not the answer.
Emison free zones in L.A i think that would be a major problem with our Chicano LOW RIDER communities this is part of L.A s history we can never let that Happen!
we need to all be on the same page on that one. Regardless of what party you are in for sure.
People get complacent with where their tax dollars go and just expect the state to solve all the problems and continue running the same from day to day. Its just like the CAFE standards and carb nonsense. FFS! CAFE standards are ironically the whole reason theres no fuel efficient mini trucks going to the US market, but rather massive pickups that only get bigger every year. Its time for all of us to get more educated and involved in our country before all the things we love get legislated out of existence.
absolutely.....the CAFE standards Ruined Mini trucks. And that is what we need. Those laws need to be changed. Meeting the MPG requirements is a total farse.
i sort of stunned to hear someone from cali to have views that you have.Stunned,Being a small business owner in louisiana i am constantly fighting the local government over BS fees, bills, sales taxes and the list goes on.Iv even been sent a property tax bill on a office i lease that my landlord pays property taxes on .100 percent your government is not there to help you as a business owner they are the great extortionist ,never ever dont send some type of payment to these life suckers it does not matter if its right or not.If you dont they simply just take it out of your account, try to appeal the decision well that's just a joke Literally a joke .
I'm a member of Montgomery Wards and receive catalogs regularly
Mike, your so good with vehicles, could you not manage,to do work for customers 2 days a week,or charge for metal work etc❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I kind of have some ideas of doing some stuff like that. But it needs to be the right jobs and the right people for sure. I am also going to probably paint houses 1 day a week with my guys. Wears me out though. Age is catching up.
@@mechanics4all405 Exactly 💯
Hey Mike ! when I get depressed I watch tornado videos because those people go from setting pretty to only having the cloths on their backs in a minute no fault of their own ?
Super good point.....It is hard to come back from tough times but that stuff is the Limit. OMG....or the Floods in Ashville.
Also, I respect your input on politics and the state of the world!
I hope you're not near where the fires are. Stay safe & alert!
Mike for President 2028 man!!!! We got your back. Or the Governor of CA for sure. Anyone can do better. At least you have a plan for us.
Hi I would like to see how you made your muffler for your Okrasa build. Thanks
Go Mike go!
Wow, there are so many topics to follow up with you on here. Anyway, I know you've worked on other's VWs in the past. Would you consider doing that more to generate cash flow?
Tone deaf doesn't describe what is going on with our government. It's much more nefarious.
I was trying to be nice 😀
LOL I use Amazon and Harbor Freight
All big business spends millions to avoid ALL tax
Big businesses find creative ways to avoid paying tax because they get taxed so damn heavily. tax them less and they won't resist so much. Taxing more for being successful discourages people and organizations from growing. Why work harder and longer only to get punished for it. I guess that's why socialists love the "tax the rich" thing. Make everyone equally poor!
Flat tax rate for all. Tighter regulations for tax dodgers. just my opinion.
Hard work only
I'm one of those guys who takes pride in doing everything myself at home. All too often I see a car described as "home built budget car" and yet there's a list of pros who did the body, engine, paint, upholstery...well that's not home built! A friend of mine is a car enthusiast who works long hours to pay the bills for someone else to work on his cars. each to their own I guess.
Had to begrudgingly pay someone to line bore my engine block, but that's the extent of it.
Politics: I thoroughly agree with you. And we went through the same here in NZ. Had a "tone deaf" government with a soft approach to crime and an anti-car agenda, and now we've gone Right Wing. Things are looking up but it will take time and work.
Our news media hate Trump and put a seriously biased spin on anything he does or says. Many can see right through it though.
And I agree about "clean" technologies. They aren't clean. Every EV that catches fire (and it happens a lot) puts out more pollution than thousands of gas guzzlers. They have a short lifespan and can't be rebuilt or recycled. Unlike you, I am very much against EVs. There's no perfect solution but we would have been better to push hydrogen engines.
AND... I agree about the "Tax the rich" BS. Absolutely.
Great talk Mike! Hey whats a good quality brand of acrylic enamel single stage paint that can be color matched? Not something thats literally $1000 gallon but a good quality that polished out beautiful and is durable and long lasting.
Mike, I went to brother's machining yesterday. I left my number... if you need any help, let me know.
the brothers are good people.
Take.care.mike.
I let you play almost all night 😂
HI - /now the time to sell--ok Tennesse great tax base//Tennessee , Vice Grip ,, Bus Grease Monkey in Tennessee and build up ,
Blah blah ,vere ist da v.w??
All common sense…..keep up the good messaging….Hopefully Californians can one day figure it out and vote common sense.
Avoid Oldspeed and Ceasar Hernandez.
Why?
would love to hear more on that. I dont know who he is thanks for posting though
@fuscavw1 They took my money and never gave me my 1776 with straight cut gears. Over $10k. Total scumbags. Ceasar steered me away from Powerhaus too.
Now Powerhaus (Not 'budget' off-topic), Jerry set me up with a 2110. Awesome. That Shop is the real deal.
@Mikefngarage Ceasar represented Oldspeed as a Budget Engine Builder. I thought it was on topic. Sorry bro.
👋🏻😎🇬🇧
I see many of your points and can agree with most of them, but Trump is not the answer. Sure you will get some of what you wish for, but the bad he will do will outweigh the good.
I guess we shall see over the next 4 years. But the problems caused by the left are IMO much worse.
Unfortunately it’s too late for California. Even if the majority there wake up the government is so corrupt they’ve locked in the downward spiral. I wish you the best, Mike, and will continue to support your channel.
Maybe you’ve never had to deal extreme right wing maga neo nazi proud boys before then. I have. In fact one of them destroyed the paint on my 68 Squareback because I’m a “commie”
Trump is a better pick over Kamala though, no denying that. She cannot run a country, look at what she says. Also, trump is a businessman, knows how to get things done
Dude certainly pushes for subscribes and likes. As if he didn't understand or even care...LOL.
