From your editor friend Tod, this was one of your best videos. The juxtaposition and dual story-line, the feelings, the drama of being alone, the friggin' bank (we're with Chase too and I want to go there and slap somebody for Jason), the frustration of the greedy jet ski rental guys, dangerous amateurs on jet skis, compelling music, just the whole thing. The sunset fadeout. Well shot and well told. Of course I am a true fan but as a former pro editor in Hollywood, well done.

I totally get this statement but my first thought was, why wouldn't she be able to? I love travelling the world over by myself. It is liberating, so I get what you mean, but I also think, why do we woman still have these thoughts? I think in general, women are still attached to men for their support...not financially, but emotionally, as if being with a man gives us confidence because they are there to back us up. I'm talking as an American married woman. I know I'm not explaining myself well enough and I'm sure I will get flack, so to everyone, Of course I realize women are capable, intelligent beings, I am one. Oh, @Natalie Smith, this isn't specifically directed toward you, just a random thought that popped in my head and didn't know where else to put it. Cheers.

I have to admit, as a guy who actually sails when I first ran across your channel I thought "Oh these greenhorns are gonna get swamped, run aground or get a head backed up and beg to be towed back to land in 3 episodes or less" Now I think your amazingly tough, resilient, informative and far better sailors than I am. I have learned a lot and been very inspired by you. If you ever run across a 240lb bearded grizzled bouncer looking type on his knees bowing down in respect at a marina , that will be me.

Nik & Jason, I like you guys a lot and have been impressed by many things you two have experienced and accomplished. Nikki, your ability to keep you cool during the jet ski thing, especially after experiencing damage to your boat, was out-freaking-standing. I would have had a completely different reaction. You...enjoying editing your next vid on the new computer Jason bought in Dallas. Me... potentially sitting in an Ecuadorian jail; perhaps sitting in there for a very long time. Great headwork on your part. A little damage to the boat is nothing compared to your freedom. Retired US Marine.

Your videos are such a great mix of sight-seeing, sailing, beautiful views (both above and below the water), boat repairs and sailing/navigation, and your life on-board and with friends. So impressed with your determination and skills to perform needed maintenance on the boat in this video and happy to hear that Jason seems to have those other issues taken care of. Happy and safe sailing to you both and looking forward to the next video!

Hey there, I have a bit of a caulking tip. I like to use a wood paint brush handle for tooling. The problem with metal or plastic is the soapy water will bead off the surface and the caulk will stick to where it isn't wet. Wood on the other hand, is porous and will stay saturated. Also a spray bottle is a great help :)

    • @payday510
      @payday510 6 лет назад +3

Yeah, no. It's absolutely acceptable to use soapy water, and it's not rule one of any pros I've worked with. 15 years doing exterior tower maintenance, I've done miles and miles of urethane caulk in one of the rainiest places in NA without a call back. Basically you're full of shit.

If I was to make a suggestion for your next set of windows is to get a small plastic spatula rather than a spoon. If by some chance you can’t find one grab some ice cream (in a plastic container) and once finished cut apart the container and use it as a spatula. I know it sucks having to buy ice cream, having to eat it just to make a tool but it’s for a good cause. It’s all about the windows! Great video by the way. Love watching them.

Smooth the caulk with an ice cube. It is easy with no cleanup and works like magic. Use your mom's address.
Your cable clamps on that wire rope (cable) at 18:00 are on backward. The U bolt part goes on the dead end of the cable (Never saddle a dead horse). The U part, when tightened, will distort and possibly damage the cable. That damage or distortion should not be on the load-bearing part of the rope. If the clamps are or get a little loose the part clamped in the saddle can slip, that slippage with correctly connected clamps will tighten the cable "eye" rather than pull the "eye out and release the rope. Out at sea in a storm might not be a good time to discover the wire rope came apart.

    • @MrHealey01
      @MrHealey01 6 лет назад +2

That is really good advice, I have seen similar where the load cable has bird caged due to the distortion of the clamp being fitted incorrectly. Ideally in a an assembly where cable tension adjustment can be accomplished by a turnbuckle, these type of clamps should not be used, swaging fittings are more appropriate.

I tell them that when they fall off to watch for other water craft and to wave their arms in the air to help make them more visible. I agree though, in general, the jet skiers are the worse behaved.

Its the same here in Australia, luckily they usually hug the coast so if you go about a kilometre from shore they are OK. We had some particularly nasty ones that were travelling at high speed close to swimmers (including me), My wife took videos and confronted them and got really harassed. (Whilst I was blissfully unaware as I was out sailing), S o the videos went to the local police and as we have strict laws regarding these things, they got spoken to by the constabulary. :)

  • @justbellavista

Jet skiers make ideal targets for paint ball guns! Failing that tie a piece of floating line from the boat to a buoy 30ft from each side of the boat, fastened with fishing line. Jet ski goes over the line, line gets sucked into the jet, stops the jet-ski dead, rider flies over the handle bars. If anyone asks, you were doing work on the hull of the boat and it was clearly marked with buoys. Tried and tested method.
Tip 2, get yourself a glass lifting sucker to use when cleaning the hull. Clean a patch then suck the handle onto the clean bit, now you can hang on with one hand while cleaning. Saves so much swimming against the boat.
Tip 3 when working with silicon sika or any of those messy adhesives use the cut edge of a potato to smooth off the excess. It won't stick to the potato and you can cut the potato to any shape.
Great video all the best "Justbellavista"

Not sure if you read new comments on the old videos, but I have a window suggestion that MIGHT solve your persistent window leakage problems. I noticed in a recent video (2021) that you were caulking again (your most recent video? I'll cross-post this comment there too).
Try 3M VHB 5952 tape. This stuff is inexpensive, and comes in 15 yard rolls, various widths (I find 3/4 inch fairly universal). It is used for all sorts of things, such as siding on busses, signage, trailers for 18 wheelers, hanging glass on skyscrapers, and anything where you need a STRONG weatherproof bond. I've used half a roll in three years just on various projects, and highly recommend it.
You night also get a can of the VHB surface primer to pre-treat surfaces for the best bond. I haven't needed to use it, but there can be a handful of difficult surfaces that it addresses. See the 3M VHB website for info on that and what to use it on.
No, I don't work for 3M or sell their stuff, I just find the stuff so freaking useful.

A tip for the windows.... Try using one of your scrapers to leave a nice and clean, flush finish with the sealant between the plexiglass and the body of the boat. It would make it a lot easier then using a spoon, that's for sure.
Also, this is my first comment to any of your vids. Absolutely hooked! Started watching a few months ago and pretty much binge watched them all! My girlfriend and I both... We live in Phx, Az. Although I am Dutch, born in Amsterdam, lived in Monte Carlo, South of France, Marbella in Spain for 7 years, England for almost 6. When I lived in Spain, my family had a Southerly 115 swing keel sailboat and we used to sail to Gibraltar on occasion. Ever since then I have dreamed about sailing the world myself and since watching you two, the dream is now even stronger than ever and something I am aiming to do for sure. Just gotta buckle down and make the dream happen now....
Thanks for sharing your adventures, you two are great fun to watch and always look forward to your videos. I wish you both the best and will continue to comment and follow you as you go... Safe travels, sorry the jetski fools hit the boat. At least the damage wasn't too bad... Hope Jason doesn't flip out too bad, even though it's not your fault.
Happy sailing and exploring and hopefully one day when I finally get back on the water again we may cross paths somewhere. Much love to you both, Tom

Another thing you could try when applying the sealant is rather than cut across the applicator tip, cut a v (or bird's mouth) into it; this allows you to run the tip of the applicator along the surface whilst leaving an inverted v-shaped even bead in your wake. Hopefully this also helps the sealant to spread evenly when pressing in the window into place as you have no distinct high spots or differences in amounts keeping the window from bedding properly.
I am sure someone else will have commented about this - but is the paint there for UV protection of the sealant; much in the same way you get 'frit' around the edge of car windows, however this is baked on silicone not paint but I don't think perspex would stand up to baking! Having had a similar failure on the windows on my boat (it was not that long ago that the last owner redid them), I was considering cutting some black vinyl to apply to the outside when I do the re-fit.

Sonihull by NRG Marine looks like a winner, here is a very good system to look into. Sonihull also has a shaft production transducer as well as a transducer for stern drives.
      1) www.nrgmarine.com/ (main site for Sonihull, there are 21 countries that supply)
      2) ruclips.net/channel/UCnPHDmrAthuP15k8cgUyAKg
      3) www.pyiinc.com/sonihull/ (USA reseller)
      4) ruclips.net/video/JxoEOaaQIm8/видео.html
Note #1: A Sonihull is suitable for all single skin GPR, aluminium and Concrete hulls. Foam Core hulls have special installation requirements, please contact Sonihull for details.
Note #2: Wood boats will not work due to the low density of wood and the quantity of joints makes for poor acoustic transmission of high frequencies, so making the unit far less effective for this application.
Note #3: For a catamaran you would need (2) of the Duo Model, thats 2 packages, each package comes with 2 transducers for each hull. Although the manufacturer recommends on 40ft hulls to 55ft hulls to place 2 transducers on each hull for maximum coverage and results I imagine you could put one transducer on each hull, just depending on the length of the boat, and cost considerations.

Installed Sonic Shield from CMS Marine (Cotswold Microsystems Ltd) based in the UK. I needed the 3 transducer version as we are 42ft. I did not video the installation, but can let you know it took about 3-4 days all in. The hard part is finding routes for the cables, which naturally depends on your boat design. The System cost £1,438 including a remote controller which was useful as it allowed me to install the master unit out of sight. There are cheaper version in the US and Australia but did not want to risk any warrantee problems and the dreaded import charges so went for the UK supplier as that is where we are currently based.
It's the first complete season with a fresh cost of antifoul, so far so good.

Windows --> Prep is the key. A nice smooth tape job and a flat edge with no ridges on both sides, cut out the tape on both sides to get the shape you want. Then a 1" wide putty knife is a good starting point. A flat finger on the edges for a final touch up with lots of water when you pull the tapes before it dries.
Man I feel so bad for the way I felt about you both when I started watching these videos, Jason was so fruity at first to me, you were so artsy fartsy. Now I 100% admire you both and the love and care you have for each other and the way you treat each other is just so endearing to me now!
