The true reason why most gave up / faiIed learning a language is, because most hum’ns didn’t choose a pretty language like Dutch & Norwegian & Welsh etc with mostly pretty / poetic words that one would actually enjoy learning!
In a year??? I've been learning english 10 years in school, and I needed to learn by myself too... lol School is useless, proofs are here. A, Quiero aprender Japones despues de Español :) I am native Polish speaker, and I learn English and german in school. But I don't want to learn german, but I may start so: Polish was my first language, English was my 2nd language, Spanish will be my 3rd language, Japanese will be my 4rd language, or 5th if I will finally accept that I need to learn german at School ;)
I told my friend I wanted to learn Japanese and her response was: "Alright then. You just gotta promise you'll translate memes for me" which actually helps me because it gives me something to look forward to
4:06 - 4:11 "You have to cultivate discipline, not motivation. Motivation is fleeting." So simple but So profound!!! If nothing else that line has changed the way I view learning. Thank you!
Easier said than done. You don’t need motivation for physical things like working out or brushing your teeth but for more mental things like learning, you need some sort of reward, incentive or motivation for it to be worth sacrificing time
The special and big terms / names Reed and Lucas and You and cultivate etc cannot be misused by hum’ns, and must be changed, and pronouns can never be with a capital letter when referring to hum’ns - I am the only being reflecting names such as Reed and Lucy, and pronouns can only be with a capital letter when referring to me THE superior / important being aka The Goddess / The Lady / The Queen / The Princess / The Star etc, while nature related terms / names and other purity / big terms etc only reflect me, and all unsuitable names / terms must be changed and edited out!
Also, the true reason why most gave up / faiIed learning a language is, because most hum’ns didn’t choose a pretty language like Dutch & Norwegian & Welsh etc with mostly pretty / poetic words, that one would actually enjoy learning! So many people ask me why I'm learning Japanese, and that I'm a weeb, and blah blah blah. Thankfully, there's Soooo many more supporters. It's really cool that people actually CARE.
Sol, it's nice to know there's people who like learning other languages as well! Btw; I'm also learning japanese!. .only for speaking though. . . And sorry if my English was bad, it's my first language.
I'm learning Mandarin Chinese and people ask me why not Japanese cause it's SOOOO much more interesting? I recalled trying to learn Japanese and just being called a weeabo. Lol it seems you can't win so just learn whatever language you want regardless the reason why.
I hate the fact when u say u want to learn any Asia languages they start say “ew why do u want to learn that” but when it comes to other languages they say “that’s nice” “that’s cool” and i really don’t understand how that works🤦🏻♀️
Pimsleur is simply too UNDERRATED!!! Pimsleur (which is free in most UK libraries) basically gives you essential elocution/pronounciation lessons from native speakers. I completed Pimsleur French I, II and III and i couldn't recommend it more. It taught me how to pronounce French syllables, words and phrases with great accuracy, natives would constantly be impressed at my accent considering the short time I've been leaning French (1 year 5 months). Can someone speak fluent French after completing Pimsleur alone? No. Yes, in the sense that you can fluently say phrases in French, however you will not be able to engage back and forth with natives beyond a superficial level, because the vocabulary in Pimsleur doesn't nearly cover the incredible amount of words or the tenses (past simple, continuous) you will NEED to know when conversing with native speakers, there's no getting around actual grammar and vocabulary study if you want to really speak a second language - Pimsleur is simply an aid, but an incredibly effective one at that.
Unfortunately, there is no easy solution but to just do it. If you have any free time, dedicate it towards language learning instead of scrolling through TikTok.
People has got to stop being so negative about learning languages. Usually there are a few languages that are "accepted" which are usually the languages we learn in school such as English, French, German and Spanish (at least where I am from). If we tell people we are learning those languages it is okay and often even encouraging. Like how people even expect us to speak English. But when it comes to languages that are not one of the common ones we learn at school we are often criticized for wanting to learn them. We get questions such as "why do you want to learn that language, you'll never use it" and we all of a sudden get to hear more negative things and jokes about the culture and country of the language we want to learn. The thing the people saying this don't understand is that when people close to us say these things it discourages us to keep learning the language we want to. Because we care about other people's opinions about us, especially people close to us. This might or might not be more common among the older generations, but I think as a new generation who is much more globalized and accepting we need to take this into consideration. It's never a waste to learn a language ♡♡♡
Love your comment, especially the last line, thankfully my parents are fine with it, my mother is even telling everyone about it, even after i told her NOT to, well everyone in my city knows about it now
so true , as a sikh we are taught that the more languages and cultures you learn about the richer and open your life becomes , it helps expand that similarity we have as one human race ; to feel that sense of family not strangers
for me its simply: Day 1- motivated and exited to lean the language Day 2- completely forgot about the language thing 4 weeks later- remembers about the language and the cycle continues
Thank you so much for showing me Pimsleur! I have tried for months now to learn Japanese but i got nowhere, i tried so many methods and services. i really doubted anything would work because of my Autism and Dyslexia. but i finally tried Pimsleur and wow it ACTUALLY works!! I'm mindblown..
I wish I had heard not to tell anyone I was learning Russian back when I first started, cause you're absolutely right. People are so negative about learning languages, it's insane. :///
motivation is temporary you have to be driven and passionate, build a disciplined mindset and stay in your lane. don’t let people who doubt you get in your head.. unfortunately the haters are usually the loudest.. make it personal stay hard! and enjoy the process
about not telling people I think that if it's people whom you share the same interests with, it's actually better to tell them, I have been a part of a challenge in twitter and it was really motivating bcuz a lot of people are participating and it's motivating me to keep going as I see others and people with the same interests always motivates you
You had a song from one piece. I think it's called "The Strongest One". Then I actually had a mini orgasm when I heard the song from K: return of kings. I think it was "Kizuna" or "Firing" but, I always get those two mixed up. Then I had another orgasm when I heard "Mikoto Suoh's theme" at 9:27 Also I love that you had the 2nd opening of Durarara!! At the end of you video I didn't recognize anything else though
I just found your channel a couple days ago from your language videos and I just wanted to say I love your attitude about language learning and videos! I’m hopefully gonna check out your book soon and I’m super excited :)))
I can definitely agree with the whole 'not telling people' thing. When I started my first language outside of the home, German, I tried to share it with everyone. One specific person I thought who would be a good resource was an Austrian girl who lived nearby, but it ended up being quite the opposite. When I shared I was starting to learn German, she looked at me and told me, "uh you shouldn't learn German, since you weren't raised there... you're nationally American,". It hurt me to hear this, and I ended up stopping German because of this- and have never truly regained the motivation to learn it. So now when I start a language, I keep it to myself until I'm conversational or at this confident in it. I have found I am far more focused and disciplined because of this.
When I was leaning English"still learning" my friends use to come up to me and show me a random words that they thought were in English most the times wasn't , but if I couldn't translated it, they would start laughing and making fun of me, and after that I learned my lesson🤐 , and my English has improved a lot after since🙃
do they even know english themselves, if they don’t, who are they to laugh at you when they don’t even know how translate it themselves and those words aren’t even english most of the times.
I did Pimsleur French and I thought it was a very good program. I was going to try Rosetta Stone until I read that it's not that good and too expensive. I supplement with various online stuff. I'm not fluent, but I can make my way in a French conversation.
Why I started with language learning? Cause I was tired of reading subtitles. Down with -English -Hindi -korean Now I'm starting with my Chinese basics.
I'm Egyptian and I became fluent in English by only watching TV shows, movies, vlogs and listening to pop songs. I'm learning Korean and I really wanna learn Chinese ❤❤
I really recommend buying his book, I'm currently studying Italian and in a month following his FME method I did more than I did in a language school for the same time period. Ikenna I really can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge, I hope to stay consistent and master Italian so I can thank you in that language. KEEP ON BEING AWESOME
I was very lucky. I had great success from the get-go. From a young age I started learning languages. My uncle married a woman from Mexico City when I was 10 years old and my uncle would interpret everything to her. He was a polyglot. I heard the language when they would visit and would learn phrases here and there. I also learned about Mexican culture. When my aunt would speak English, I'd hear her Spanish accent. When she'd say my name, she'd say it with a Spanish accent. Her relatives from Mexico would come and I would try to learn as much from them as I could. I didn't really speak the language, however. Later, I met a girl at school who was an American, but spoke fluent Spanish. She had had lots of Hispanic friends and boyfriends. She told me if I actually wanted to learn Spanish, I had to hang around lots of Spanish-speaking people, get audio courses from the library, listen to music, watch television, movies, soap operas, read books, use text books and learn grammar. So I took her advice and became obsessed. I created my own language learning environment and constantly rehearsed the language in preparation for speaking with native speakers. I tried to learn all of the patterns I could (grammar/constructs/verb tenses/conjugations) so that I could manipulate the language and say anything I wanted. Everything was in anticipation of speaking with natives. I also started meeting lots of Spanish-speaking people at the ESL classes (English as a Second Language). I started hanging around Spanish-speakers almost exclusively and determined I was going to be a Spanish-speaker and adopted a new identity (or rather an additional identity as it were). In school, I took three languages and ended up doing independent study because the classes were ridiculous. I tell my story on my RUclips Channel. Check it out. I also learned several other languages in a similar way. I speak six languages and focus mostly on having the highest level of fluency in each language and endeavor to speak with an excellent accent. I'm a polyglot, but quantity is unimportant to me. I speak English, Spanish, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian and American Sign Language. I'm a court interpreter (English-Spanish) and also teach both of those language. In addition, I have a website dedicated to language learning/interpreting. www.corynicolas.com
Omg. Some of things you just mentioned are things I do, like turning off the program when my bro or parents are around, and that preemptive reward feel I get when I tell people anything I wanna do. What happens? I don’t go through it cuz I just experienced the feeling of already knowing how to do it. I just don’t wanna give up. I’m an amateur linguist, raised bilingual, but I get frustrated or lose motivation after studying any foreign language after 3 weeks on average. Your video just reminded me of all the things I have been doing. 😝 this is dope! Thanks bro!!!!😃
I'm a big Pimsleur fan when starting a new language. Check your public library. Mine has a TON of Pimsleur for free!! (i'm in the United States, so i can't speak for other countries)
Very well put together video! All great advice, but one difference I’ve had is by telling as many people as possible that I’m learning a new language so I feel more accountable, sometimes it’s that little push to get my head back in the game

Dude this was helpful! I’ve been learning Thai for over 3 years just by watching/listening to RUclips videos and a couple books. I’m at a ‘lower-intermediate’ level (and low with reading/writing Thai) but feel I should be further ahead that where I am. I know this feeling. 100% agree with what hes saying I have just reached a basic fluency in french after being one of the worst in my school and trying again now. Having a good strategy and the discipline to adhere to it is the most important thing by far. A little everyday
So I had no idea who you were when I started looking at learning a language again (failed before lack of self drive). You really hit it home with these reasons. I have since started back up from scratch on Japanese with Pimsleur. You really are an inspiration to those looking to broaden themselves.

You should make a video about learning korean alphabet, Korean is the easiest language in Asia believe me, korean alphabet is RLYYY easy everyone can learn, is not like Japanese that you have to lear millions of characters, korean would be an amazing 7th language, the korean dramas are AMAZING like (Chicago typewriter) , and the songs too, for example (Dean- Bonnie and Clyde) the songs made me fall in love with the language and then i learned about the culture, a good RUclipsr for learning is 영국남자 (korean english man) ,i learned the alphabet literally in 2 days, i cannot wait for you to some day learn Korean~
Yeah, the alphabet is super easy... But the pronunciation is _so_ hard 😅. It's like the opposite of Japanese; easy pronunciation, difficult writing. Thankfully, LingoDeer help me a bit in hearing differences between the letters.
@@Antyla hahaha true, but this guy can literally speak Chinese and German that's why i thought korean wouldn't be that hard for him :), i learned korean in 2014, these days im pretty fluent, i remember that pronouncing the individual words wasn't difficult for me but reading fast or even in a normal speed and try to understand everything while reading was veeery difficult, but with practice everyone can do it :)
@@Crystal_12gem Japanese doesn't have an alphabet. Well... technically, it doesn't. Hiragana and Katakata are a writing system called syllabary. For each combination of consonant+vowel in the Roman alphabet(ba, bi, bu, etc), there's one letter for it in both Kanas, except for ん/ン(n). (In my opinion, this is what makes Japanese writing so complex; it has *three* scripts used alongside each other!)
RUclips videos are also pretty good for learning languages! I’m currently learning german and I’ve watched all the A1 german playlists out there while also using Duolingo and now I’ve progressed to A2 very easily! :)
The method part kind of really got to me. I am studying Japanese and I have this weird way of training myself to remember so far hiragana. It’s been about 13 days of just repeating one set of vowels seven times and I already remember more then half of all the hiragana. I’m really proud of this because I’ve been on and off of studying this language for a couple of years. But now I’m really happy that I’m actually able to retain the info
Thank you so much for this video. I got knocked out of my normal routine of getting up in the morning and starting my day with studying and my routine and such and I still feel I don't know how to go about learning a language and through the websites and videos I've watched and read this is another video that has helped me give insight on how I should attack language learning. I may not want to be a polyglot but I think learning a few won't hurt. Thanks!!
u are my inspiration. i'm 18 years old and stated learning japanese for anime(pimsleur). i'm dying to meet you sir, yeah i bought your book, its amazing
I can't even stay consistent with what language I wanna learn. One day I want to learn Irish and the next day it's Chinese then it becomes French and so on. God damn how do I just stick to one
I love Rakuten Viki! The only problem I’ve had with Pimsleur is that I’m a visual learner and it’s an audio program. But I do use Glossika while I’m doing other things like driving, taking a walk, cooking, etc. Having no “dead time,” while you’re doing chores is really helpful!
I am actually so thankful to you because I watched one of your videos about pimselur and I couldn't get it, but I discovered an amazing similar tool that worked magic for me called Language Transfer I am using this to learn spanish and in one month I can build a lot of sentences that I didn't think that I can even say 😭
It can be good to tell people, although not necessarily before you start. They can help to keep you accountable, knowing that you will be disappointing them if you give up
I already speak 5 languages (Chinese, Dutch, English, Spanish, French). I want to add Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, Latin and Greek to the list (and maybe more but I can't think of any other languages anymore). In the first year of middle school I had German classes, turns out I suck at that so that's the only language I will definitely not learn. EDIT: I made a typo
@@ozymandias8523 I was born in the Netherlands so that's why I can speak Dutch, my mom is Chinese and she doesn't speak Dutch that well so I have to translate things for her and that's how I maintain my Chinese. When I was younger I played a lot of games on the Nintendo and I watched a lot of TV series which were in English so that's how I learned English. My (current) school teaches 3 different languages and I had 2 of them for 3 years (This year will ben my fourth year having Spanish). Apparently I have a thing for languages so it's really easy for me to learn new languages (except for German). One of my favorite methods is to watch series that are in a different language and turn captions on in that language. It's also important to practice a lot, it may be weird but sometimes I randomly start talking in a different language and some of my friends answer me in that language as well. I'm not an expert, this is just how I pick up languages. At this moment I'm only 15 so there'll always be room for improvement.
Wow my man , pimslur is amazing thank you for the information and the tip with not telling anyone is probably some of the best advice I've ever had thank you! Much love from Eire.
I very much appreciate your style and your tips as well..i’ve always thought that learning languages was something for just some people, but now I know that if you’re motivated and you can stay focused, you really can learn anything in life (not just languages)I’m speaking from experience.Thank you very much..you’re also kind of supportive.Look forward to watch other videos..

4:06 - 4:11 "You have to cultivate discipline, not motivation. Motivation is fleeting." So simple but So profound!!! If nothing else that line has changed the way I view learning. Thank you!
You are right
Easier said than done. You don’t need motivation for physical things like working out or brushing your teeth but for more mental things like learning, you need some sort of reward, incentive or motivation for it to be worth sacrificing time
I'd you're not motivated you won't learn whatsoever
There are about 38 to 50 pretty languages, while most languages are a non-pretty language - the pretty languages include all Germanic languages (which are also the prettiest and most refined languages ever) and all Celtic languages and most Latin languages (including Portuguese / Galician / French / Gallo / Catalan / Spanish / Italian / Esperanto / Occitan / Latin / Corsican and their dialects) and, Hungarian also seems pretty, from what I noticed! I am learning about 15 pretty language at the moment, and I usually prioritize Dutch & Norwegian & Welsh - I’ve learned more than 6.500 base words in Dutch and over 3.500 base words in Norwegian and also in Swedish in a few months!

How much does it cost?

Hi, PINGU. I didn’t know you wore clothes.
Love your comment, especially the last line, thankfully my parents are fine with it, my mother is even telling everyone about it, even after i told her NOT to, well everyone in my city knows about it now

so true , as a sikh we are taught that the more languages and cultures you learn about the richer and open your life becomes , it helps expand that similarity we have as one human race ; to feel that sense of family not strangers
for me its simply:
Day 1- motivated and exited to lean the language
Day 2- completely forgot about the language thing
4 weeks later- remembers about the language and the cycle continues

J'aimerais trop savoir bien parler anglais 😍

I related so much when you talked about hiding your language learning. That was low-key me with Arabic.
I have to admit, I was skipping your videos when they appeared as ads, but these tips have been useful. Thank you!

Tsuki maid you do know Japanese has an alphabet system (not including kanji) ??
@@Crystal_12gem
Japanese doesn't have an alphabet. Well... technically, it doesn't.

EDIT: I made a typo
iYehshan how did you learn so many languages? What’s the best method in your opinion?

I always watch videos like this when I can't be bothered studying my language.

Bro, I really appreciate you. I'm learning Spanish now and I stay motivated by watching all of your videos. I can't wait to see where I'm at this time next year.
