i fully agree but as someone who's learning japanese, all the characters put me back. It's more and more easier but each time i come upon a long sentence that has just 265161 words and kanji that i've never seen before understand, it's just exhausting and it gives me headaches Well at least i found many tricks to search them(like google trad with the camera that recognizes kanji) but sometimes i just need to stop, go out and breath for a while I wish one day i can read japanese et just think "remember the last time you saw a word you didn't know ? that was so long ago"
totally, I'm a native Spanish speaker and when I started seriously learning English, reading books in this language is probably one of my best decisions, a bit hard at the beginning but really pays off
@@Whillyy yup, as for Japanese when exploring apps I found the newspaper ones but that's honestly too hard no matter if you set it at the JLTP5, so reading children books is much better I'm using 絵本ひろば and if you set it at, let's say, 7 years old, you get some kanji with/without furigana good for practicing tbh
The problem is I have a “kid in the candy store” problem with language learning. I start with Spanish but then I want to learn Norwegian... then German... then French... lmfao etc etc. I feel too many languages will only make it harder to learn them individually
Learn one, or ar least get "dangerous" with it. Then, use that language to learn the next one. First, I'll get better at Spanish, then I'm planning on learning Mandarin through resources designed for Spanish speakers. In that way,I learn a new language while sharpening my skills in the one I just mastered. Takes away the fear of forgetting Spanish while I focus on a completely different language. I got that idea from another RUclips channel. Not my original idea.😁

I'm Japanese learning many languages. And to say the least, 'Pimsleur' literally changed my life. When I first started studying Korean. I took it slow, I studied the alphabet Hangul (it’s quite simple actually) and I focused on pronunciation. it’s weird this came out now cause me and my friend made a challenge to spin a random wheel of languages and try to learn it in four days. We got finnish. Great.
Ay I’m Finnish and know it cause my parents speak it, I know I’m biased but it’s a sick language and you shouldn’t have too much trouble learning it since it doesn’t really have exceptions
I wish I had a friend to do that with. 😂 Of course I would have to meet people and get good at Spanish before that happens. Finnish is cool language though. 👍🏻
I did a study 2 years ago listening to music helps we have something called prosody that remembers rhythmic patterns. Also, I did an experiment/ survey. Spanish was our winner with most students remembering Me gusta ( I like it) by Natti Natasha with 8 votes. Every other song only got 1.
One thing that I found really engaging was changing the language settings on a videogame you're playing (that is if your game has that option). This probably works more so for text heavy games, but it allows you to use your language skills even when you're getting that gamer bread.
I'm planning on doing this with Russian in Animal Crossing, it's an extremely text-heavy game and one that I really enjoy so I think it could do wonders
Did u just read and sometimes translate? How did u learn?I want to improve my skills but I have no options to talk to foreigners in my country so I want to get that normal speech not a book speech. I will be really happy if u share your valuable experience~

I am also learning Spanish and sometimes I feel like I'm not going anywhere as well but some days it feels very rewarding. What tools have you been using to learn? I recently started using Busuu and Lingvist as well as listening to podcasts, watching Spanish RUclips and watching TV, although I find it very difficult to watch TV with subtitles in Spanish because of my lack of vocabulary.
Bought your book almost 2 months ago followed everything u said Started with pimsleur completed the lessons and I finished about 1 week ago and I finally started Assimil so far its been pretty difficult but I haven't missed a day of studying and I can say that I know about 700 to 800 words now more or less

Just watch media in your target language. That’s how I learnt French. I watched 100s of French dubbed anime with French subs and I got to a pretty good level with 8months. I just looked up words on my second monitor while watching. after I felt comfortable with watching anime, I started reading then everything sky rocketed from there
@@Tasi_things there’s a popular French torrent site called yggtorrent.li It has most dubs used. However, if you want a more legal route try using Netflix + nordvpn to France. The only downside is that there isn’t a large variety to choose from if u use Netflix.
Also! Disney has the biggest library of animated movies translated into different languages. They translated their entire library into a bunch of languages. Also Also! French TV shows!! Lupin is so good, I just finished it and while I didnt understand everything if you stick on French subtitles you will be able to follow the show
Wow these are such great tips! I actually did a lot of these when I learned Spanish and now as I’m learning French. However I haven’t tried reading comic books and I think this would be a great way to start reading in the target language without it being so daunting. Thanks so much 🙏🏾

I’m going to start learning French, and I hope to be conversationally fluent by the end of the year. I’m not sure if I’ll actually follow through, but I’ll try my best. I’ll update this comment every week with my progress and hopefully in about 7 months or so I’ll have it down for the most part. Also yes, I’m completely copying someone’s idea who commented on another Ikenna video but I really want to do this too. Week 0: This is the first day. I’m in French 2 at school so I already know a good bit of basic phrases and words, but not much more than that.
Definitely saving this advice. I've been listening to postcasts and watching Japanse vtuber streams to try to get a hold on the language. I should start to work myself into reading and writing too.
thank you for all these videos man, you inspired me to start japanese despite it being hard and also later now i plan to retouch spanish that i struggled through in school
I'm currently studying mandarin and anki + bilibili, douyin, iqiyi, or other chinese platforms are my best friend, I listen to music while doing homework and it's pretty fun and helpful!
Thank you so much for this video. I have "Learned" am kind of fluent in american sign language. And now learning spanish, and hope to become fluent to move on to another language. I'm 16 and Learned that I love learning languages! Thank you again for this video please keep posting your videos are what keep me going when learning a new language. And give me new and better ways to learn it so I dont get bored.
I'm currently learning german and I think I'm stuck on the intermediate level. I practice every day, listen to german music and sometimes watch german TV-shows, and like, I can feel the vocabulary expanding but every time I try to speak I get brain dead lmao... I make a pause between every word I say and it goes so slow, including my writing. I actually create pretty good sentences both when I speak and write but I'm just very slow and have to think before every word I make and it's getting really annoying.
I feel like you need to watch more shows and blogs (also playing videogames could help if you're a player). It'll give you more language patterns valuable for daily situations. If you're comfortable with it, try speaking to yourself in German, imagine that you're a blogger and talk about different topics. That'll help you to think in German so when you're talking to people irl it'll be super easy
When attempting to read my first novel in french I found that personally it was easiest to read a sent amount (e.g a chapter) and skipping over words that were not familiar, and then afterwards highlighting new words before adding them to my anki deck. Not sure if it was the most efficient way to read but it definitely helped to improve my vocabulary and solidify my pre-existing knowledge
I am really happy to hear that I am not the only one who reads books in my target language. Reading Japanese visual novels, webnovels and even anime subtitles helped me acquire a bit of Japanese. I am still in the intermediate pit but I am making amazing progress by reading. Wish you a happy and fun reading journey!
- pimsleur or any begginer audio program -listen to lots and lots of japanese podcasts such as "hapa eikaiwa" they can be found in google podcatst - consume content in japanese like anime or other movies which you have watched before. For example, frozen is dubbed into lots of languages including japanese. - frequency lists. Look up frequency lists and see the most used words in the languages and see if you can recognize them in the podcast and music that you listen . - look up basic grammar rules so that you can make sentences on you own. Like "わたしわかよでづ"/ "i am kayo". - learn nouns, pronouns, etc words that are necessary to communicate such as "a, the, of, you, how, if, why, then, for, leave, by, should, word, nothing, are, can, way, know, about" etc.
Use Tae Kim’s grammar guide, then after going through everything in that guide, it’s time for the fun part, immersion, but first you’ll need is Anki, remember to read the manual. Then watch shows, read books/manga, listen to podcasts, or any content made for native speakers of Japanese, and if you encounter a sentence with a word that you don’t know in it, plop that sentence onto Anki, with the unknown word’s meaning, not the whole sentence’s meaning, only the word. If you have a PC however, you could also use some of Migaku’s or TheMoeWay’s tools for language learning, as those are way more convenient and faster than doing it manually.
Dude, I love your VR Chat videos so much, you've met many interesting people and I'd like to see you guys doing chitchat. I really hope you come back with those videos someday

it’s weird this came out now cause me and my friend made a challenge to spin a random wheel of languages and try to learn it in four days. We got finnish. Great.
Hahaha😂 goodluck
Ay I’m Finnish and know it cause my parents speak it, I know I’m biased but it’s a sick language and you shouldn’t have too much trouble learning it since it doesn’t really have exceptions
I wish I had a friend to do that with. 😂 Of course I would have to meet people and get good at Spanish before that happens. Finnish is cool language though. 👍🏻
@@icannotcomeupwithanything4609 Coolest part of learning finnish is Finland itself lol
@@shikov111 I so want to travel there

this is exactly why i love your content 🔥
Thank you so much Ikenna.
I bought your book, but I was side tracked into reading other books strangely enough, but I was enjoying it.
I did a study 2 years ago listening to music helps we have something called prosody that remembers rhythmic patterns. Also, I did an experiment/ survey. Spanish was our winner with most students remembering Me gusta ( I like it) by Natti Natasha with 8 votes. Every other song only got 1.
I literally just got YOUR ad on YOUR video, that’s crazy and cool at the same time.
One thing that I found really engaging was changing the language settings on a videogame you're playing (that is if your game has that option). This probably works more so for text heavy games, but it allows you to use your language skills even when you're getting that gamer bread.
Sims 4
I'mma change it to korean 😭😭👌🏽
I like doing that with text heavy games but it slowed me down super badly when I tried it with a Pokemon game.
@@kclarke421 I would too but I don’t read most of the notifs I get so there would be no point😭
@KaraDUN I was thinking of changing it Chinese to match with what I'm learning, but I can't bring myself to stop listening to English 🙁
I'm planning on doing this with Russian in Animal Crossing, it's an extremely text-heavy game and one that I really enjoy so I think it could do wonders
I learned english from webtoons/manga/manhwa 👍🏻

the webtoon tip is amazing, thank you🙏
only got recommended your channel rn, good to see you are healty and still learning
The idea of re-watching shows but subbed with the language you want to learn is brilliant.
I was a big Webtoon reader for a couple of years and never thought about it as a tool in this way!
Thank you for emphasizing to pick media themes you already have an interest in... really explains how my high school language requirement didn't work so great...
I am learning Spanish and I feel like I am not going anywhere. Hopefully I will gain a lot after this video.
Edit:
I do not want to be this person but screw it. Thanks for the 160 likes. I never actually had this much before. Also thanks for the support.
Good look with your Spanish friend 👍☺️
You got this. I used Pimsleur when starting Chinese and I felt like I was actually doing solid. Just lost the time to work on it.
I'm also learning spanish and I feel the same. I thought that as a Portuguese speaker that would be "easier" but honestly, that's not the case
@@zestastic3359 Gracias/Thanks!
Bro you don't understand how happy I become whenever I see a new video of yours🌺🌺
God bless you
Bought your book almost 2 months ago followed everything u said Started with pimsleur completed the lessons and I finished about 1 week ago and I finally started Assimil so far its been pretty difficult but I haven't missed a day of studying and I can say that I know about 700 to 800 words now more or less

Right now im learning French and ur videos have been really useful😁👍🏾
Bonne chance mon amis. J'espère que vous apprendrez français plus vite!/ Good Luck Friend! I hope you learn really quickly!
First time I heard about frequency lists, great idea for efficiency!
Just watch media in your target language. That’s how I learnt French. I watched 100s of French dubbed anime with French subs and I got to a pretty good level with 8months. I just looked up words on my second monitor while watching.
after I felt comfortable with watching anime, I started reading then everything sky rocketed from there
Where can I find some dubbed anime in French? I have been looking for years!
@@Tasi_things there’s a popular French torrent site called yggtorrent.li It has most dubs used. However, if you want a more legal route try using Netflix + nordvpn to France. The only downside is that there isn’t a large variety to choose from if u use Netflix.
@@ln6264 Lol nice. Another piece of evidence that immersion learning is actually effective.

Thanks so much 🙏🏾
I am learning English while I watch this video at the same time taking notes because I want to start learning another language.
thats it. you have gave me the motivation to start relearning korean. its been like a couple years and i frogot everything! imma start relearning everyday. thanks
I didn’t know the comics in several languages. Thank you 🙏 Actually it’s what I do with my stories in 6 languages. I will recommend this to my son.
I like the New style of your New videos, that you put clips in it looks more professional than just talking to the camera. Keep it up 👍
I’m going to start learning French, and I hope to be conversationally fluent by the end of the year.

"Listen to music in the target language"
Well, don't mind if I do. Just gave me another excuse to listen to J-pop.
Haha I felt that one
Ew
@@lifeuncovered6188 why?

J-pop will help you with a bit of vocab, and listening, but other than that it’s just an okay resource. I’d recommend immersing with shows instead.
0:54 Pimsleur was actually the first ad that popped up on this video. What a coincidence!
@@orange_kate Thanks for the tips, I will definitely try that!
Keep inputting with shows, your speaking will improve naturally.

Thanks for the encouragement Ikenna!

Also listing to audio books in another language especially if you've already read or listened to it in your own language will really help.
so i can write hiragana, can identify katakana and know "some" kanji what should i do next helppp
- pimsleur or any begginer audio program
-listen to lots and lots of japanese podcasts such as "hapa eikaiwa" they can be found in google podcatst
- consume content in japanese like anime or other movies which you have watched before.
He seems to feel a lot better! I'm so happy for him🙏🏾
