The Philippines has firmly rejected China's claim that it needs permission to access Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea. National Security Adviser Eduardo Año dismissed China's demand as "absurd, nonsense, and unacceptable," emphasizing that Ayungin Shoal is within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) recognized by international law and the 2016 Arbitral Award.
Año asserted that the Philippines will continue to maintain and supply its outposts, including the BRP Sierra Madre, without seeking approval from any other nation. This statement comes after the Chinese Coast Guard allegedly harassed a Philippine medical evacuation mission and seized supplies intended for troops stationed at the shoal.
The United States has reiterated its commitment to defending the Philippines under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty, following the latest confrontation. The incident has heightened tensions in the South China Sea, a region already marked by long-standing territorial disputes between China and the Philippines.
