Man.... you do not see these any more. As a kid, I rode on one, Western Pacific, Stockton area, about 1954 as I recall. Our neighbor was an engineer about to retire. I must have been 4 years old. I was heaven!
I so wish these Beasts were back operating on the rails, they were a sight to see!! Built like a tank, but streamlined like an airliner. They were definitely unique.
Thank you all for this video. It sure brought back some fond memories for me. I had the very rear occasion to be allowed to operate a GG1 back in 1978, in NE New Jersey. The locomotive number was #4857. I think it was all PC or Conrail black . This happened because my cousin was an engineer for Conrail. And he got me into the engine service yard. I'm a 'live steamer', but, to run a 'G' was the thrill of a life time. Sorry for the wordy post.
It’s a little vague but, it looks like one side of this GG-1 still has the PENN CENTRAL PC on it. And by the way, that GG-1 and all other predecessors, including the SW-9 paved the way for that Norfolk Southern and other Dash units. Great video. Thank you for sharing.
I visited these GG1s going home from school a few times to photograph them, sad to see in such a state of disrepair but at least they exist. Great vid btw
There has to be a way they could refurbish one of they to working order. Look what UP did with #8014 (Big Boy). So I think they can do the same with one of these GG-1’s.
It is unlikely the GG1s will ever run again, the original operating gear had a huge transformer that was full of PCBs, which are now banned. They also likely are loaded with asbestos. One possibility might be to use the power unit from something like the ALPS engines NJT used in some way, would be very expensive. Added advantage the ALPS gear can operate on Amtrak or NJat tracks.
OK, a backhoe would have been almost my last choice for moving one of these (rototiller would probably be last, or maybe a pressure washer). Was NOTHING else available? And that chain dont look none too large either, specially with that guy putting his head right next to it to chock the wheels when they reset. What happened to the switcher?
CP would not allow for any unit to cross onto their main for headroom, so they had to utilize a backhoe to shuffle it along before the MLW could bring it up the hill. Switcher's still on the property in active service.
Wouldn't it be nice if they painted one of those in the bicentennial paint scheme? I have the Williams gg1 electric locomotive and paint Scheme is super cool. I have a diecast gg1 that when you press the horn button instead of the horn you get God Bless America. My trains are probably not politically correct.
I don't remember where 4909 is going but 4934 is owned by The Henry Ford Museum. Funds to move her have been scarce. Hopefully the move is finally underway.
Sadly 4934 sits in the woods now on rail that is no longer connected to anything. I watched a video from Nov 2021 where she now sits, unlikely to move again. There are two GG1s, two box cars and a mail car together.
It is such a shame to this country that we once had the best electric railroad system in the world. There should be catenary and third rail everywhere and you can have diesel Electric with third-rail shoes and catenary so it can utilize two sources of electricity and Diesel power when it's not. Trains even steam powered trains are the most environmentally friendly forms of Transport that are very efficient for the small impact on the earth that they make. Every Big City should have elevated trains like New York City and Chicago.
It's a Hancock 4700 Air Whistle. One of my favorites. Basically a whistle designed to work on the lower air pressure that diesels use. The New Haven used them on tons of their electrics and diesels.
Gg1 4917 needs to be restored & it will be used in the metro electric line & it will have a new speed limit and it's up to 160mph & it can travel from 85mph to 140mph and it will be used and it will be friends with the metra Highliners & also the other gg1 #4934 will be used in the MARC railroad & It will have a new speed limit and it will be up to 185mph and it can travel from 85mph to 175mph and it will run from Washington D.C to providence & it will replace the F59PHI locomotives and some will be scrapped except for 3 and one will be donated to the New York Central Railroad Museum, The Other One Will Be Donated To Amtrak and it will be repainted Into An Amtrak F59PHI and it will pull Amtrak train from Hoboken, NJ to Sacromemto, CA from 80mph to 155mph and it will have a new speed limit and it will be up to 175mph and it will be the fastest F59PHI ever! And the last marc F59PHI will be displayed in the Amtrak shops in Wilmington, DA and it will stay there for 10 years until it is used by Amtrak and also the gg1 will do a doublehead with SC-44 #4604 every year when it pulls the Circus train and also it will run south and north from Washington to providence all decade long and LET THESE 2 LOCOMOTIVES BE RESTORED!!!
Do we know where she is finally moving to? And thank you for the footage, I saw both of them in the Early 90's and wished I had a camera. I never made it back up to the area...
Switchers are like little tugs in the harbor - move 20X their own weight. I was wondering if they put an airline through the consist. I didn't see them connect brake pipe. Too much weight to operate with no air!!!
We won’t be making them operational being that we’d need a lot of power and of course an overhead wire. There are talks though to at least give them a new coat of paint and windows to make them look nice.
How can this country two very expensive electric locomotive become almost scrap metal. Gg1 last forever if they get maintained when they need it was a stupid decision on con rails part to discontinue Electric service.
@@Dodgeviper591 More so awaiting cosmetic restoration. The LRHS needs more members to do the work. It’s a volunteer organization that owns the locomotives, between operations and track maintenance, there’s hardly any time for restoration work.
Come to Green Bay and see GG1 4890 RESTORED at the National Railroad Museum, and parked inside the newest Exhibition Centre since 2001, and professionally repainted in Tuscan Red with 5 pinstripes, and parked directly next to UNION PACIFIC BIG BOY 4-8-8-4 ARTICULATED MALLET 4017. As far as I know 4890 could be the Only GG1 preserved Inside a Building. But almost all the others are just stored outside for the past 40 years and rusting to death!!!!! Problem is they're frames have rotted badly, the trucks are prone to cracking, and they're usually gutted due to PCBs in the transformers

Its not often to hear a Hancock air whistle on a diesel these days. I remember hearing them as a kid on occasion (i'm 43).
The New Haven railroad was the largest users of the Hancock Air whistle
I love the design of the GG1
Love the "steam" whistle on the diesel.
How many years had that old CP hopper been sitting before it was moved?
These are still sitting in the woods on this line, and I think that the tracks no longer connect to the main. I think they were ripped out.
I wish to see a gg1 running again
Y hoy en día están tiradas en una via muerta. Las vi hace dos dias en un video junto a un coche de correo.
Many of us want what is best for those units. They keep the. dream alive. America under electric wiring. Like it's on the NEC.

Suspense thriller! The GG-1 makes its appearance after 7 1/2 minutes... Sad to see the GG-1's in such scruffy condition. They need to be under cover.
7:30 mins of other steps that go into it.

Switchers are geared very low for lugging power not speed
What class model Alco switch engine is that?
That is a MLW S4, same as a Alco, just produced in Canada for Canadian Railroads
Where is this?
Cooperstown Junction, NY. The same move will be preformed this week but to get 2 recently acquired Alco S4s to their home base in Milford, NY

And so these will sit on the siding for another 25 years...
Good luck video 👍
I also do content like that.
Whats the open hopper car for? Spacer for the bridges?
wilber53 For extra braking
What happened to the two GG 1s? Where are they now?

How old is the gg1
Probably late 1930 or early 1940. Maybe even older
At least diesels can move under there own power unlike electrics
What's that loco an s2 or s4 ?
I have no idea as I live in UK
