LISTEN AT 1:28 SEC AND YOU CAN HEAR THE CONES AND BRIDGE BEING AFFECTED BY THE VIBRATION FROM MARKS VOICE ~ THIS INSTRUMENT IS STUNNING SIMPLY STUNNING ~ GOOD HISTORY LESSON ON THIS GUITAR ~ FANCY FANCY FANCY ~ WHAT A SOUND ~ OMG SUCH RESONANCE ~ I OWN ONE RESONATOR GUITAR ROUND NECK ~ CARLOS GUITARLOS 90042 USA
Yeah, the reverberation of that thing is very noticeable as Mark is describing it. Every time he turns the tri-cone body up towards his voice the echo can be heard. Listen around the 2:04 point as well.
Oh. My. God. That guitar is so resonant it sounds like it's ready to feed back. What a sound. Mark, Jen, you are the best. GOTD is appointment viewing.
The bodies for these guitars were made by a company owned & run by Adolph Rickenbacker. George Beauchamp was later one of the founders of what became the Rickenbacker guitar company. After WWII National morphed into Valco, the "L" standing for Louis Dopyera, brother of John. Also: Dobro = DOpyera BROthers.
Hello everyone sorry I haven't been keeping you guys to date, but unfortunately my mom passed away last week peacefully, thank you to mark and jen and everyone that wished us well. She loved the show as do I and my family.
#WeirdAssWednesday #1929RoundNeckTriCone 1) Romeo & Juliet / Dire Straits 2) you gotta move / Rolling Stones (Mississippi Fred McDowell) #ThoughtsAndPrayersForTexas 🎸🙏🏻🇺🇸 thanks mark & jen 🎸🎥
2) Sittin' on Top of the World / Walter Vinson, Lonnie Chatmon, Mississippi Sheiks, 1930 I love Fred McDowell, know people who knew him, but he didn't write this one.
Mark, Thanks for doing guitar of the day...your a trooper! We love it. May you have a masculine child who is born with exceptional talent to play the guitar like Hendrix.
by the way, nobody know how many songs Mark can play, and how quickly he learn can learn new song, amazing!it's always the first youtube clip I watch every morning when I get to office in HK
See it's a Nashville. Ooh. I hope he plays Knopfler's Romeo and Juliet. Goes to couch, has a capo. Ooh. Maybe he will. First note, YES! Awesome guitar and playing (in open G for those asking). Best episode ever. Thanks.👍
Used to have one of these, well not an original, was from the 90s. But my mother had bought it for my dad and when they split I kind of inherited it. Unfortunately my mother sold it because she needed money. Miss that thing so much.
i forget how many styles they had. but i always loved the engraved ones…and its even a tricone. so rare, so valuable, soooooo good sounding. listen to how balanced it is! just talking will get those cones moving. i know all resonators resonate, but they don't ring like that anymore. sooo clean, the tricones are just something else. they are far too expensive for me to ever invest in one, i'd probably never play it enough anyway, you have to be a resonator guy. i just appreciate them.
Listen to how it rings when Mark is speaking when he opens the case. Thank for playing Romeo and Juliet. I saw a steel guitar and immediately thought about Mark Knopfler.
The thing that makes these great for slide is the early ones, the neck is flat. No radius at all. That means you can play, or deaden, any strings you want across the whole neck. Amazing sounds you can get from that. They pretty much only do radiused necks now on the round necks.
okay but when is JOEL gonna do an episode??? Or Norm? or anyone else in the store. I love you mark but I think it'd be really interesting to see what would happen.
kyle saloka Sorry lol had a rough day I couldn't be creative. Plus I'm sober and will stay that way. I broke a $170 dollar bong, so I just said fuck it I'm not getting another one.
JJ's Reversals Good idea lol. Maybe if I get some of that Atlanta bud. I was cleaning it. The freaking thing was 18.5 inches and had 3 honeycomb percs. I was standing over my bathtub shaking it with the rubbing alcohol and salt solution. It slipped out of my hand from probably like 5 feet. It hit that porcelain bathtub and it shattered. It pissed me off so badly. I thought to myself that it wasn't even worth it. Atlanta has some crazy good stuff. When I can get it I prefer Blue Dream. It's a sativa dominant hybrid that helps with my depression and anxiety without a sedative side effect. If I'm having bad insomnia troubles I take a hit of Gorilla Glue #4. That shit is so potent it usually puts me to sleep before I can even get the munchies. If I want to show off I'll bring out the Grandaddy Purple. I shouldn't be that torn up about it. I haven't consumed cannabis in close to 2 months. I was cleaning it to shelf it. I'm probably not going to smoke again. I've found good "legal" treatments that have been effective so it's not a necessity anymore. I don't like the feeling of just getting stoned. Cannabis helped make things better for me when other medicine wasn't available. Now that I have it there's no point in risking getting arrested or something. I broke it a while back.
I'm gonna go ahead and stop this video as soon as the case opens and say this: 1) that is GORGEOUS! And 2) if you don't play some slide on this I will be highly disappointed .....back to the video
Fuck YES! Weird ass Wednesday! National is an American manufacturer putting out weird ass guitars! You know what else is a weird a(we)s(some) guitar? A HARMONY ROCKET IN REDBURST!!! EDIT: wait, happy birthday baby Agnisi?!?!
Do you have any National dobro's laying around at Norman's Rare Guitars to demo? The tri-cone style 4 is sweet, but out of my price range. Your an excellent guitarist who adapts to a wide range of styles. Major prop's to you! And Jen is amazing too!
I love the information & the playing on these videos. But in the "show me the money" aspect, I wonder how quickly the featured instruments head out the door as compared to similar instruments not featured.
Nice video Mark, thanks for the National history lesson..I have a type 2 I think..just not that old..very cool sounding..What's the difference between Dobro..is this the same two guys? I know Dobro is a brand..just wondered if it was the same guys from National.
Hello Mark, Jen, Mike M and others who are thinking about us here in Texas. Sadly we need more than thoughts and prayers to rise above the devastation. I humbly ask everyone to donate to the disaster relief fund of your choice. ( Mine goes to the Red Cross.) Something even as small as the price of a pack of guitar strings would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Uncle Duke
Nickel is used in these guitars by National. The largest nickel mine is in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Every Canadian should own one of these. By doing so we support our workers in the small towns.
Killer sounding guitar! Just wondering, does anyone know why these tri-cone models have the T shaped piece on top of the strings? Does it not get in the way or playing?

Oh yeah, Ya Gotta Move! The slide stuff sounded fabulous--lovely guitar and excellent playing-bravo!

Interesting Info David.. Thanks!
David Kieltyka cool info....nice to know who and where things come from.....this site is like the Jay Leno garage of guitars.....so interesting....
Visited this video for the history lesson. Not disappointed! Thank you.

2) Sittin' on Top of the World / Walter Vinson, Lonnie Chatmon, Mississippi Sheiks, 1930 I love Fred McDowell, know people who knew him, but he didn't write this one.
msspi764
correct, author/writer I think is unknown. But McDowell's 1965 slide version inspired the Stones version which brought this song mainstream.
I've lived in Houston my whole life. Thank you for the shoutout and support Mark. Love your videos
Never ever have I seen or heard one before. Thanks for expanding my world....😊
Romeo & Juliet is one of my favorite songs! Gotta love it mark!
Just awesome
Mark, Thanks for doing guitar of the day...your a trooper! We love it. May you have a masculine child who is born with exceptional talent to play the guitar like Hendrix.

Used to have one of these, well not an original, was from the 90s. But my mother had bought it for my dad and when they split I kind of inherited it. Unfortunately my mother sold it because she needed money. Miss that thing so much.

Awesome guitar. Great song choices too. 👍🏻🎸
Omg. When he turned that guitar around!!! The back side of that thing is beautiful! (Yes, I'm an ass guy)
i am too man. let's talk about it.
Love your playing, Mark. Had to watch this one all the way to the end.
when you first opened the case your voice was resonating off of that resonator , that was cool !
Cool... thanks
Super cool guitar man, nice playing as well
I knew he'd go with dire straights, I love it
Great slide work. #Weirdasswednesday.
not sure if it was the fancy one like this, but there are great videos with Son House playing one on "death letter blues" that has such a great sound.
Nice guitar. I bet it's going to be sold before Sat.
Holy shit do I want one!
Awesome Mark thanks for doing this shit everyday. I LOVE IT!
This was great
Wonderful guitar, played beautifully
Amazing guitar nice job on Romeo and Juliet MA!
No joke man. I live in Houston. First thing I did when I heard that shit was coming was get my guitars and amps on high ground.
Beautiful Tri-Cone

Great vid!! You can kiss that national goodbye, I bet it's already sold or will be tomorrow. I hope to God you pull out a burst this week..
One of the best GOTD to date!
That's one beautiful looking resonator guitar
Utterly, utterly lovely in both looks and sound. Less brash than the more common single cone.
okay but when is JOEL gonna do an episode??? Or Norm? or anyone else in the store. I love you mark but I think it'd be really interesting to see what would happen.
Thank you Mark, I enjoyed that
I was talking with a couple of friends about the National Style 4's last night lol, spooky timing
You guys want to see a really weird guitar. That double neck BC Rich Bich on CME
$18,000 range... Deal or No Deal ????. Beautiful Guitar. Very Cool.
Thankyou so much for playing Dire Staits ! All I could think of was Knopfler while you did the intro
When you break your G string halfway through the song
And you were working the pole like a pro up to that point
Jacob Reece ahh the g string jokes...classic
Oh man. Never heard that one before. ;)
Jacob Reece Waits. I didn't see he brokes it.

As soon as I saw that capo on 3 I knew.
How many of these gorgeous guitars still survive? How many were made back in the day?
that guitar was so dope, and really well played. But please mark and jen do a Burns
I love the information & the playing on these videos. But in the "show me the money" aspect, I wonder how quickly the featured instruments head out the door as compared to similar instruments not featured.
Apparently they didn't etch Skulls back in the 1920's... Excellent/fun video. Thanks!

Hey mark, could you play some cat Stevens for my late grandma this flattop Friday?
I am now inspired to buy a resonator.....that sounds fantastic finger-style.
Goya Panther bass please!!!
Psst... Mark, my big 2 1 birthday is Sept. 9th. Itd make my whole year if you did a Gibson RD and played some Wang Chung.
F Yeah what an awsome guitar🤘🤘🤘 Can you please do a V??
very cool
Killer sounding guitar! Just wondering, does anyone know why these tri-cone models have the T shaped piece on top of the strings? Does it not get in the way or playing?
I was thinking - is he gonna play Romeo and Juliet? Is He??!! and then YES
holy shit, this thing actually sounds good lol
Play some Primus for my birthday Mark, it's September 7.
Is that a Kyser Combination Capo/Hat hook?
Hey Mark it might be a tall order, but do you think you could do a 50s strat if you have one? Especially one with a fat neck.
1. Mark Knopfler - Romeo and Juliet
That's it I quit. I bet those firebirds sounded great to. I guess I'll never know. Still love you both. Keep up the good work.
Makes me think of the late great Chris Whitley, RIP.
Which National "style" guitar was on the cover of Dire Straits Brothers In Arms? I'm guessing Style 3 and yours is 4 with the tricones.
