Repotting New Phalaenopsis Orchids! My Repotting Routine + Organic vs Inorganic Media Comparison!

- Hi everyone, I'm Annabel, and welcome to my channel! :-)
In this video we’re going to be repotting two new complex hybrid mini Phalaenopsis that I purchased today.
I usually repot straight into LECA in Semi-hydro or self-watering, but thought it would be a good idea to also do an example repot in an organic media mix that works in my environment, since many people prefer organic media (I like adding sphagnum when I use bark, since it makes sure the moisture in the mix is distributed evenly- I have a warmer environment so this works well for me). This way we can do a side-by-side comparison of the two growing methods for my environment, and I will post updates on progress :-)
There is no single way to grow any orchid, it’s just finding what works best for you!

i guess it's kinda off topic but do anyone know a good website to watch newly released series online ?
@Gideon Jonathan lately I have been using FlixZone. You can find it by googling :)
@Jacob Jake yea, I've been using flixzone for years myself :)
@Jacob Jake thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) Appreciate it!!
@Gideon Jonathan No problem :)
Excellent job, great you showed both methods.
They look so pretty, I forgot about Sainsbury's selling orchids! tfs your information :)
Interesting comparison, I’ve found also that the time of year affects the success of transition, but starting with a healthy root system helps, often there’s a sponge mini pot at the centre just under the stem and if it’s left to long in that it causes root and stem rot before you even get it home, I always repot phals immediately for that reason, I do use Leca but more for Oncydium alliance so I’ll be interested to see your results. Love your videos by the way
Yes definitely if you repot in a season when the plant is in active growth it will adapt much more quickly! But I always repot all orchids straight away as you say, regardless of flowers. Especially oncidiums, whenever I buy them they seem to come with infestations of tiny snails that just love to snack on roots! I learned the hard way not to trust the media they come in... All my phals are grown in LECA in SH, funnily enough it's oncidiums that I struggle to grow in LECA 😄 Thankyou! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos 😀
Would be nice to see the update video to compare the different mixes :D
I've done updates and repots, you can find them in the phalaenopsis semi hydro vs organic playlist, I will link the most recent below 🙂
ruclips.net/video/C4AiRJJsrvo/видео.html the most recent and specific update, though I've mentioned them in a few odd videos this is the one that displays the most evidence.
@@TheOrchidRoom awesome! Thank you so much. I've watched it now. Great to see the awesome root growth in the new medium
@@SWu-sl5kz No problem 🙂
Very interesting - thank you for sharing your knowledge. 😊 I hope to see a follow-up video to see how they are doing in their different media.
Still a beginner, but I am learning so much as I work my way through your great videos, Annabel.
I would really like some advice on choosing a pot for a new Phalaenopsis.
How do you judge the size of container (i.e. height and width). Also - does it make a difference if it is glass or plastic?
thanks again.
Hi. Beautiful phals. How do you make the extra holes in the plastic pots?
Hi, thanks 😀 I just drill them in, if the plastic is too brittle though it won't work, certain types of pots will snap when you try. I've heard alot of people use soldering irons but I don't have access to one.
Hi there... thanks for the video. It's been a year now in the two different media. Did you do an update video for these plants. I'm trying to decide between leca or bark mix for my own new orchid.... just a beginner... lol.
I would definitely recommend lots of research before going into semi-hydro, it is a fantastic growing method if you go into it correctly and prepared 🙂 I have around 400 orchids in semi-hydro or self watering setups with various mixes of LECA, pumice, Lava and seramis, I wouldn't go back personally.

You may also want to check some of my semi-hydro videos to make sure you understand the process and maximise success if you are new to the method. If you are completely new to orchids then it is probably worth growing in bark for a while until you have got that culture down 🙂 I don't know your situation though so only you can make that call 🙂
New to phal orchids ( well plants in general). Fo you use fertilizer spray? If so do you spray everywhere or only root area? I was told not to get the stem or leaves wet.
I don't use fertilizer spray no, only fertiliser liquid in the pots. Foliar feeding can be done, but I think there is limited evidence for absorption through the leaves for most nutrients- the only one I know of being magnesium. It's more hassle than it's worth in my opinion, if water gets in leaf joints and doesn't dry fast enough it can cause rot. So living in the UK, I'm not too fond of any spray treatments as it means I have to put the heating on and all the fans on in the room to try and dry the orchids out quickly. So I only spray for pests, not fertiliser.
@@TheOrchidRoom Thank you so much! I have been learning so much. I just want my orchids to be happy. (Or in my case survive.) I feel anxious at times. Again, thank you so much and have a great night!)
@@mysticpixi No problem! I wouldn't mess around with misting or foliar feeding orchids until you're confident of what works for you, just because of how much hassle I find it to be 😂 Nutrients tend to be absorbed better through the roots in general anyway, and phals don't really need misting as long as they're getting watered 🙂 Let me know if you have any other questions!
I am very interested in trying your method of potting Phalaenopsis in leca. My first order of leca has arrived and I am confused by all the differing information on various pre-treatments. Would you mind advising whether you pre-treat your leca before using it for your orchids. I am sorry if this is a bit basic, but I am a total beginner.
Hi! No problem 🙂 So straight out of the bag, I get a colander and rinse the LECA thoroughly until the water runs clear. I then place it in a tub and fill with water (all these stages are tap water) and leave it soaking until I need it. I'd say at least 24 hours, you'll often notice sediment gathers at the bottom. Then take off what you need for the repot with your colander, pot the orchid up. Then flush through again with tap water after the repot, empty the reservoir by tilting to drain off, hold the top so LECA doesn't fall out. Then refill the reservoir with a nutrient solution using rain/RO/filtered water. I make sure to give a seaweed dose after the repot, then continue my normal feed at the next watering which has seaweed in also. Hope that helps!
It's actually something I will try and do a video on, like you say it isn't clear when you start. Thanks for the question 🙂
@@TheOrchidRoom Thank you for that very clear description.
When you say "seaweed dose", do you mean a seaweed solution? (We have a product called "Seasol" here in Australia.)
@@Matilda52 Yes, I use seaweed with every feed, it contains growth hormones that orchids respond very well to, to encourage root growth and reduce adaptation times.
@@TheOrchidRoom Thanks again Annabel.
I'm sorry to be a pest, but I have another basic question - what is the "nutrient solution" that you add when potting?
I understand you also add the seaweed solution to that, and then in every "normal feed" afterwards.
How often do you feed/water your plants once they are potted up?
Hi do you use charcoal to reduce algae build up
Hi, No I dont use any charcoal, the algae only builds up in the reservoir not in the actual pot, and while its photosynthesising it may actually be beneficial to roots that do enter the reservoir by providing more oxygen. it's only when theres lots of dead algae in the reservoir that it's a problem, and only then for roots inside the reservoir potentially but this is a theoretical issue at present, I've never experienced any issues. This issue may arise due to the decomposing bacteria reducing O2 levels in the reservoir, but flushing through the pot can often help to clear the dead algae as they dont seem to stick as well.
I'm also not sure how effective charcoal is at stopping algae completely, as I purchased some rhynchostylis a while ago potted in only charcoal, and their pots were full of algae growing on the charcoal....
What brand of hydrogen peroxide do you use ?
Brand doesn't matter, the 3% strength and fizzing on contact is what's important 🙂
@@TheOrchidRoom ok thanks for your reply ❤❤❤
