      Honestly go out get knocking on doors asking in villages and basically asking anyone who may own or know someone who owns land. Give your number to as many people as possible. I don't know anyone who has not found land when they go and actually look and ask around. Good Luck

    It seems there's a fork in the road... use the deposit to get a mortgage for a house or use the cash to buy land outright and escape the trap, but you have to live in a non-brick home because of nimby neighbors? Anyway, is writing to local farmers an approach you've heard of working?

    • @thesmallfarmerlife
      @thesmallfarmerlife  2 года назад +2

      I honestly think the best approach is speaking to the horse's mouth so to speak. I have had letters and they go in the bin. You will get to understand not just the person who may own and what they are doing with it, but also anyone they know who may own land to. Its really upto you and how long do you want to be looking

    This is one of my biggest questions at the moment related to this topic. Are we free and born with freewill because if that is true, we shouldn’t need to ask any permission from anyone to build a family home! Also really like the intro about not being bothered about current events 😉
    Anyway, what’s your thoughts on Wales? They have more relaxed laws about building off grid on agricultural land don’t they? Due to the works of Lammas eco village etc?

      Yeah that's deffo one of the things people feel strongly about which can vary from area to area on how easy it can be and should be. As for the comment at the beginning had a lot more to say about entitled people but don't to upset anyone

      @@thesmallfarmerlife some people were born to be ruled

    • @Youchubeswindon
      @Youchubeswindon 2 года назад

      Are we free* and born with free will* - Yes
      because if that is true - ahh no, I think you are conflating 2 different concepts of freedom.
      I have interpreted the first free and free will you talk about, as the philosophical are we able to make reasonable and unmanipulated choices, but the second I assume you conflate as being the same as the first, is related to living in a society. I have the freewill to make a choice, and the freedom not to be a slave, but I still have to follow the rules.
      I am free from undue punishment from the government. I am not free from punishment for breaking a rule which was ostensibly put in place to help all, or to stop an object or location becoming something some would desire it not to be, or one of a hundred other possibly reasonable reasons (They say safety laws are written in blood).
      Stopping you building anywhere what ever you want, is first a function of the capitalistic distribution of a finite resource we have settled on (land ownership) and secondly to keep development to controlled areas to avoid excessive construction, damaging land beyond its agricultural ability, or to stop it looking like a shit hole.
      I have no control over my neighbours putting up a 200 story block of flats on their land made of lithium, ruining my view and the 500 year old woodland, except by planning regulations and building control, it also restricts me as well, but it stops me also screwing up my neighbours view, or selling faulty housing to people who cannot know what shortcuts I may have taken.
      Is a child born free with freewill, yes, but also no, they can make their own choices and we all applaud them when they do; However that child is also under the authoritarian and dictatorial control of the parents / care givers and the expectations of the wider world.
      I am 'normally' free to travel across international borders, as long as I follow the rules set down by the host country, both free and not free.
      I have the freedom to clip an idiot round the ear for making a stupid choice, but am I free from the implications of doing that?
      I have the freedom to make the ultimate choice, but do I have freedom from the potential repercussions of that choice?
      An answer to the second part, is only in a truly Anarchist society are you truly double free, and you wouldn't see me anywhere near that, as a hobbyist reader of history I have so little faith in large group self organisation of people, I cannot even see how it would work.
      *Define free and freewill, there are loads of different definitions all of which are true and valid, but also wrong and invalid depending on which reference point you choose.

    I’ve been on my 2.2 Cornish acres for 6 months now. Water is being connected tomorrow and electricity is ready to roll. I just need to get a meter installed but I’m reluctant given the current climate. Do you have any thoughts on installing a meter oneself Craig? There’s a lot of chit chat about it online.

    • @thesmallfarmerlife
      @thesmallfarmerlife  2 года назад +1

      Great you have taken the leap really happy for you. If you want to be connected to the grid then just get the metered electric is still know where near as much as you may think. I only pay around £50 a month and use it for everything have no gas at all and will be converting my stable to electric only, because its easier to convert off the grid and maybe get some cash back when totally off grid

    • @angelameans8647
      @angelameans8647 2 года назад +1

      @@thesmallfarmerlife not sure what you mean by “easier to convert off grid”? £50 pm is very reasonable, who is your supplier?!! I thought the rates were extortionate currently..

    • @Youchubeswindon
      @Youchubeswindon 2 года назад +1

      @@angelameans8647 If everything is electric, if you get solar / wind (to go off-grid away from the network), it will be easier to change an electric device to run from that, making your own gas through hydrolysis or gasification is several orders of magnitude more difficult than setting up renewable electricity.
      When you do renewable electricity, you can supply your surplus back to the grid, and get paid for it. However I would recommend against this unless you have a large system which has covered most of your on-site use first, and also set up a break in the connection, so your system would continue to run without back feeding the grid during grid issues.
      Selling back to the grid used to be really profitable, but not anymore.
      You will be unlikely to be able to install a 'meter', they are owned and controlled by the grid supplier, and it is very unlikely you will be allowed to connect one yourself, especially without 18th edition qualifications, messing about with the grid cables that feed into your house is a big no no. I am not sure of this 'chit chat' you talk about, it seems its either illegally running a power line from the network yourself, or installing your own 'smart meter', which would read the mains meter, but that wouldn't read the usage back to your provider, just do the whole house energy monitoring part. If there is something else that you mean, then let us know.
      If you are not sure how much electricity you require, how do you know what is and isn't reasonable for a bill. Get an Energenie / Kill-a-Watt, plug devices in, see how much power they consume. 500 watt load for half an hour is about 250watt hour, 1000 watt hour (1kwh) is 1 unit, look at your energy bill and see what your unit price is to understand how much you will likely be paying each month, most suppliers standard rates are within a few percent of each other most of the time.
      Standing charge is your daily 'rental' fee for being connected to the grid, unit charge is how many blocks of 1kwh you used, heavy user, go for higher standing charge, and lower unit cost supplier offer, low user, the other way.
      Work out what devices you need, and what you can do without, it's the best way to change how much you pay each month, without using renewables to move off-grid.
      Rates are 'much higher than usual' at the moment, but they may not return to what you may think is usual any time soon, if at all.
