    Apple is trying to make a lot of the older macs obsolete, so that they can sell more computers. Writing code so that the
    OS would only work on the newer macs. If they wanted, they could write code that would work with both new or older macs.

    From my experience over the years, Universal Audio (Apollo interface, etc.) usually takes at least 8 weeks to assure compatibility with new OS releases. As much as I want to install the new OS right away, it pays to be patient. Thanks Sweetwater for the excellent advice!

    • @cornerliston

      As a UA user I know that Big Sur even need a patch to work properly.
      UA is unfortunately not one of those who work the hardest to assure compatibility (nor updating existing plugins to modern GUI standards.) Maybe their dev resources are focused on Luna instead. And Apple isn't making it easier either by having a new OS every year.

    • @Supermodelyum
      @Supermodelyum 2 года назад

      @@cornerliston So true. I've had a ton of glitching audio (still) in 2022. Between Sonarworks, UAD & Monterey, I haven't been able to sort the issue. (Everything will be fine for hours/days and randomly it will begin to act like the sample rate is mismatched between the OS & Apollo. OR it will act like it's running out of buffer space just to play audio off the system/web to the Apollo. -- We'll see if the latest UAD rev (10.0) solves this. But it's been a nightmare.

  • @cornerliston
    @cornerliston 2 года назад +8

    The ‘fun’ thing is that about the same time the new OS is out the official support for the PREVIOUS OS is almost just ready from the developers.
    I actually like when Apple wasn't so keen on releasing new OS so often and I have a feeling most developers liked it too.

    Best advice: if your music software cost more than a 16” MacBook M1Pro costs, stick with Catalina on an Intel mac...
    Bear in mind it’s currently the end of November 2021:
    Arturia only recently support M1 and Big Sur.
    Native Instruments are only just about ready for Big Sur and M1, (although they still don’t natively support it - it’s still Rosetta and you’ll have issues with isos).
    What’s a shame is the new Logic that’s compatible with Big Sur + is awesome, as is the M1.
    I have Komplete 13 ultimate SE, V Collection, Omnisphere, Falcon and vintage vault. I own an M1 Pro with Big Sur, but for music production, it’s so buggy (even a year after Big Sur came out) I’m still on an Intel Mac Mini using Catalina.

    • @gitarman666
      @gitarman666 Год назад +1

      Yup still on catalina as of December 2022
      Still too many devs not quite there and I don’t care about Mac features other than my DAWs and many, many instruments and plugs the machine is optimized for tracking, mixing and mastering
      Most popular Mac goodies are deleted are intentionally rendered inoperable

    Mid 2022 - Monterey has completely fracked my audio system (Mac Pro (Late 2013)). It claims to be supported. But honestly - Worst decision ever. If I wasn't also working in Logic for composing, I'd have remained on Mohave.
    EDIT:
    You also have to be careful about external SSD Drives. - If the drive was created on an OS prior to Monterey, it doesn't have the SSD container wrapper Monterey uses to keep the drive optimized. Therefore, running Disk Utility on the drive will FAIL,. The only way to successfully run Disk Utility on the drive is to plug it into a machine that has Mohave or earlier. (Ultimately the solution would be to copy the data off & then re-initialize the drive on Monterey. Then copy the data back onto the drive. What a Fuster Cluck!).

    Using M1 Max 32GB 4TB Monterey MacBook here, ( medium sized projects: around 150 tracks of vsti plugins and kontakt instances )
    Cubase 10.5 runs very smoothly, Logic on the other hand is a little buggy.
    Also all the VST plugins work in cubase but some AU plugins don’t work in Logic. I’m running everything thru Rosetta.
    Only thing I miss is Virtual Guitarist 2 which is a 32bit plugin and Slate VSX that doesn’t work on Monterey at all. Everything else runs smoothly.

    I would advise against updating just yet as the update has rendered my external drive useless. My Gtech Gdrive EV Raw keeps flashing, won't eject, won't let my macbook shutdown if connected, and won't copy files to desktop or delete files. After 15-30 minutes the flashing stops and and the drive functions normally. It is quite a headache having to wait that long to have access to sound libraries on this drive.

      You might backup and format as APFS if you haven't already. I updated a few days back and haven't noticed any issues with my external drives yet. I used to sometimes have weird issues like that when I'd use EXFAT formatted drives though. Alternatively: the drive could be failing. You might want to go into Disk Utility and run First Aid on it.

      It sounds like it is trying to index your SSD; not too difficult to fix!
      Open up your "System Preferences", go to "Spotlight", go to the "Privacy" tab, and then add your drive as a location to ignore. You can reboot just to be sure it is working as it should.

    What is Sweetwater's take on Apple Silicon vs Intel as far as compatibility. I've seen reports from other professionals in the past that the new arch breaks more things than new versions of the OS in certain cases. Since I haven't seen any recent updates on these reports, was just curious if the Apple Silicon vs Intel is still a bigger concern over the version of the OS running.

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  2 года назад +1

      Hey, Clinton! That's a great question. The Apple Silicon (M1) at this point seems to be generally compatible for most major DAWs and software - although I would still double check with all of the software that you're running to make sure. Both are fantastic, but Silicon is showing to be an extremely efficient chip, and is greatly improving performance in their computers. As for OS, you should always have some hesitancy to update to their new roll-outs. In the audio world, it's always a good rule of thumb to hold off on updating to the newest OS until the audio software companies have worked out their bugs and backed support.
      I hope this helps!

I've encountered a number of problems with the M1 computer in terms of stuck notes, disappearing sounds and random disconnections between the Macbook and audio/midi devices. Logic is solid but thanks to my Mainstage experiences, I definitely get the feeling that even a year later this hardware is not ready yet.

    Does anybody know how long it could take Native Instruments to make Komplete 13/ Native Access compatible with Mac OS Monterey based on previous OS updates? The clerk at Guitar Center told me it’s compatible and I won’t have any issues, which I currently do face. The Native Access updater keeps crashing. If it takes longer than 3 months I think I should return it and buy something else in the mean time. In conclusion, I Should’ve shopped with SweetWater, they actually know what they’re talking about.

    • @ohheyitskevinc
      @ohheyitskevinc 2 года назад

      Try giving Native Access full disk access in the security settings. That sometimes fixes things. For Monterey, it will be a while until they will say it’s officially supported, but they do fix things by product. So right now Massive works officially, but you’ll get Arkhis, Noire, Piano Colors, etc working fine. A lot of the play series are broken, and I can’t get any expansions to install. They show up as failed in Access and my download folder has a load of failed ISO’s in there.
