I’m so glad you found a solution! As others mentioned, loc brushing is the best way to prevent this from happening, and if you haven’t tried yet, the Neutrogena Anti Residue shampoo is sooo good for removing buildup! My daughter and I have locs, and I promise that shampoo is the business! It’s also less harsh than the ACV/baking soda rinse.
Thank you! I will look for this one soon. I'm out of what I usually use. So I'll use in between waiting on my next shipping of usually products.
@@bornforpurpose2690 I hope it works for you!
Thank you for sharing
Hello Kathy. Do they still sell the Neutrogena shampoo? If so where? It’s not on their website and Amazon is selling it for $64.
@@deey132 Hi, they unfortunately discontinued that one recently, the company replaced it with the grapefruit clarify and shine, it works just as good. I find that one at Walmart and Amazon.
My Loctician recommended coloring my locs black. BEST DECISION EVER!!!
Ah I wish this worked for me!
This is THEE way!!
I have had locs for 3 and a half years and also have lint in my locs. I don’t like using products in my hair other than natural oils and water, and use a clarifying shampoo. I feel like lint and locs go hand and hand and it’s impossible to avoid it. Brushing helps for sure but i am just accepting it as it is. I’m not cutting off my locs because of lint. And I’m not going to deconstruct my locs and weaken locs. Just dye over them. My advice.
Same! When I first started my locks journey I had no idea how dangerous lint was. I found a way to get some of it out (see here: ruclips.net/video/w1gQFteJXTc/видео.html) but for the remaining lint I just dyed my locs.
Thank you for this. I was struggling this morning with my lint. Its mainly in the back and i almost wanted to cut them. You encouraged me to power thru
How long does the dye last?
@@EXHORTINC1 it depends what kind of dye you use and how often you wash your hair. If you want it to last long term I recommend using permanent hair dye
I switched to using old t-shirts to dry my locs (in place of standard terry towels). Also home made flax seed gel conditioner tends to keep hair soft enough to be able to brush lint out easily. Things we learn over time (been loc'ed for 8 years).☺👍
Thanks for sharing!!
When I had traditional locs, I would take a soft brush and brush through my locs which helped WONDERS! No lint ever
Do u brush daily or weekly?
@@amaniiexxchnge i brush almost daily
I've seen that too. I think this can be done when the locs are in the mature or rooted/elderly stage. Now if it's in the teen stage and the locs are still trying to form, then I'm not sure using a brush would help the teenagers! ☺️
loc brushing can help with lent prevention as well. If you use a soft boar bristle brush maybe once or twice a week it will catch all the lint in the bristles before it has time to embed into the loc.
Yess thank you this is super wise!
I wonder how old your locs have to be before you can brush them. i’m a newbie.
@@bettyeames6812 I would wait a few months if you have coils or twists with really soft hair. If you have kinkier for you may be able to now if you feel confident that you can do it without it unraveling your locs. I would just make sure that while it’s a soft bristle brush you still don’t brush too hard.
Lint buildup results from the products in your hair attracting the particles - I stopped using all conditioners and creamy products including shampoo. I use seamoss gel before and after I wash and it eliminates lint
I have the same problem all of a sudden when I changed continent, I was told it’s the hard water in France 🇫🇷, I didn’t have this problem in Africa
This is so true. It is the product you use. I have never had speck or links. Please don't cut, stop using too much oil.
😢😩I literally cut my 4 yr old locs in March because of how dusty and linty the back looked. I was embarrassed to put them in a high bun because the back had turned light brown chalkyish. It looked like I never washed my hair but I was in the shower every week or every other week washing them because I didn't want ppl to think I was "a dirty locked girl". It dried them out too with all that washing. It's been 9 months and I miss them daily. I thought the only option for me was to pick the lint out with a needle or something sharp, but I saw so many vids about how that creates holes and damages the loc and I was scared they would fall out lol. Sorry this is so long but I've been there 😔Thank you for sharing. I appreciate your transparency and knowledge, and glad it worked for you and you didn't cut your beautiful locs❤.
My daughter is 8 her locs are long and beautiful but full of lent! I don’t want to cut them but it’s so bad they look like highlights at the bottom. Should i comb them out? I tried dying and the lady did my baby’s hair wayyy to dark. She has natural highlights and went from that to basically jet black i hated it.
Girl, I don't blame you at all. I've done it before and I don't regret it. It was worth the risk for me.
Yes girl same same.
I had the same issue. Drove me crazy !!I did two ACV rinses and that just brought the buildup to the surface. I cut it out, I used tweezers. In the end I put the ACV rinse in a spray bottle, sprayed it in my hair and let it sit and spent about an hour washing my hair and scrubbing small sections of locs with a soft bristle brush. That has finally worked.
Wow looks like it was a couple trial and error to get you to that point too, I feel you and glad you were able to find what worked!
this is the problem i currently have 😫 it just brought the buildup to the surface like wtf i feel like it looks worse lmao
@@turquoise8603same did you find a solution please
I'm already combing out my locs
I am almost at the three year mark with my locs and this is my fear. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome! That was certainly me!
Dr. Locs...she has a wonderful pre cleanse that will take that right out naturally
I love Dr. Locs products
Tweezing definitely weaken the loc and long term it’s damaging. Best to just dye it your hair color. Loc brushing can help to prevent it
This is smart, I didn’t want to dye it another color but I can just dye them to my color lol
Girllll you scared me for a min there. 😂 but I’m glad you got it worked out. Locs are beautiful❤️.
Sorry 😂😂 thank you Sindy!!
I dyed my hair black and started covering it more.. so overtime I can cut the lint out slowly but surely as my hair grows
That's what I'm going to do as well. I have lint build up in a few of my back locs and I will cut little by little as they get longer. I won't color it because my natural hair never took color well and I don't want to ruin my locs so ill just cut off the lint.
@@tsimmonds55 do a rinse same as hair color as possible im contemplating doing that
I combed out a few locs because I didn't like the size of them With the intent to make some in the back larger that I didn't like the size of because I didn't want 2 headed dragons. When doing this, I noticed the amount of dirt trapped in my locs! And I washed my locs every 3 weeks or or if I smelled them. This grossed me out to know that even having an impeccable cleansing routine, that my locs still held so much dirt! I never used heavy products and I didn't have a lint problem because I covered my locs when lounging around the house. Needless to say I spent 15 days combing out my almost 3 year old locs out; which I may add was very successful! I loved my locs I just became grossed out with the amount of dirt within that one loc, so I did what made my skin not crawl. I love locs but I just couldn't deal with what I discovered ☹️
Was there a lot of dirt in the rest?
Ladies and Gents I got y’all ! Get a soft brittle brush and brush them locs 🙌🏾🥂
I just did a loc detox bomb recently, The water and the lint was shocking!! I dont even use many products, I have bought a clarifying shampoo!! Your locs are fab, build up is the worst!!
Right this is what I'm saying, I am not product heavy either but still managed to have all of this! But thank you so much!
@@iammorganalexis Do you shake your locs, I'm going to do it twice a day, i see a lot of lint when I do this!
I was on the edge of my seat like NOOOOOOO!!!! please don't cut your beautiful locs. I'm glad you found a solution to prevent you from having to cut them.
Haha thank you!
Wow, I'm glad you found a solution. I have just started 3 weeks in, and this has been helpful 👍 thank you
I used to have crazy lint in the same place. My locs are fine now. But this has been the best and most helpful vid on lint in my 10 year journey next month. Thank you Morgan 💯🙏🏿
Oh wow I’m so glad this was helpful for you! And also happy that your locs are good now!
Every time I took out my locs it was because of lint. The major problem was the interlocked sections, when lint got stuck in there it don’t come out. 🤦🏾♀️
The stress. 😭
Did you find a solution? I have the same issue 😭😭
Same !!
@@Wany17 Sorry I didn’t see a got a reply. Sadly I haven’t found a solution
@@solaris5922 did you get a solution yet?
A lint roller has been my best investment since I got locs
That's really wise, thank you for that!
I dont know from experience but I like to gather loc information nd what I hear is loc brushing helps when done properly as a means to maintain there not being any lint without having to change clothing materials etc..
I've been seeing a lot of videos showing people brush their MATURE locs. I'm only 2 months in, so I can't do that lol. But you being 5 years in, you can apparently brush them to prevent and remove lint. Just a soft brush tho.
Yess I have been incorporating that into my routine every now and again but actually now realizing i never brush back there lol yikes, thank you for this.
@@iammorganalexis lol no problem! I can't wait to get this far in.
I am glad that you were to solve your problem. Me personally ( this may sound crazy 😜), I used a permanent marker and coloured it black…😯😔
🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂I was thinking of using black dye there🤣🤣🤣
@@opnspa55 Yea I thought about that but I figured it would be less damaging to use the permanent marker to blot the white specs versus dying my entire loc. Dyes in the past when I was a loose natural used to make my hair break off. So that method is not an option for me. Good luck with it though
I purchased some loc tint from this website it's like a mascara for locs and it covers the spots but doesn't damage them. It helps covers pretty well but fades eventually.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
LISTEN!!! Currently dealing with lint, and I'm seriously considering permanent marker to to spot check. I really don't want to dye my hair!! So glad to know I am not alone in this lint struggle!!
Def use tweezers to remove the lint and then go in with a crotchet hook to reinforce it. I had to dig deep into a couple🙄. The lint was attracted to whatever product was used when I first started.
Be careful with the acv rinses, i did the same thing and my locs thinned out 😩! I’m soooo glad everything worked out for you though!
😭😭😭😭😭no wonder my locks are falling off….I wash the ACV all th time coz of the build up
@@sihlesihle6838 I heard you only should do them only a few of times a year
@@sihlesihle6838 noooooo! Only 1-2 times a year is enough. Once in the summer, and once in the winter if you are active
So I’m 4 months in. I started using apple cider vinegar because I seen white stuff in my locs (only in the back). Today I looked at my hair after washing and realized it was lint. I took out the tweezers and couldn’t believe how much lint I took out. I felt it was easier for me because I’m still in my starter loc phase. I feel if my locs were matured it definitely would of weakened it. The culprit was my hair scarf!!! Ladies look at the bottom of your scarves and check if the stitching is coming out and if lint is starting to come out. Anyways this was a lifesaver.
Lol not the clickbait 😂
I was my hair with dishwashing liquid every now and then to avoid build up/lint. Some folks swear by Dawn or any kind of lemon/citrus dishwashing liquid. Also some people suggest dying the hair so you can’t see it.
Hmmm I’ve always wanted to try dish washing liquid but never really thought it would work for me! I may revisit this!
I can see dishwashing liquid working because it has a grease cutting abilities
@@iammorganalexis Try Trader Joe's Tea tree clarifying shampoo.
Since the hair is already dead all you needed to do was get a black magic marker a sharpie and color over the lint, that’s all I do and it never shows and your locs stay healthy.
Hmm interesting!
Sometimes it really shocks me the ignorant comments I see when dealing with locs. A sharpie marker really...? 😑😒
@@iammorganalexis if acv rinses is not a option or working as well as softly brushing the lint out and you don't want to dye your locs a natural color you can always use henna as a natural alternative dye to cover the lint. Good luck
@@solarsky3691 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That's not healthy... 😂🥴
i just cut mine off (they were just reaching over a year of growth) and honestly i sometimes look back and regret it. but i was also having a lot of scalp issues along with buildup in my locs. im saddened by my loss but im excited to restart my loc journey again and fix mistakes i made in the past
Yes awesome perspective shift, I'm sorry you had to let them go but this time you'll be more prepared for sure!
I will forever love this channel ❤️
Aw thank you so much for the love!
I use dawn dish soap and it works for me. Afterwards I condition really well 🤷🏾♀️
Does that work for lint?
I saw the title and I was like "You cut your what now?" I never expected this title.
Lol!
same thing happened to me 🤣🤣 and I was ready to cut mine too but had to settle for doing exactly what you did too sis!
This is why I don't put products in my locs. Just shampoo and eat healthy. No problems 🤷🏿♀️
Simple!
No products at all not even oils to moisturize your hair ?
Hey great video, Maybe do Crochet maintenance on the locs you feel have been weakened by you taking the lent out. Just my 2 cents.
Be mindful of knits and other fluffy or rough-textured fabric you wear, especially around neck and upper back where your locs can rub and pick up lint. I would get a silky smooth large, square scarf, fold diagonally, and wear it like the boy scouts did, tucked in over my collar, over my shoulders and tied in front, the triangle point falling down in back. It helps. Brushing the back side (leaning forward, locs hanging) from neck down to the tips with short strokes. Soft brush! It works. Do your best, and color the rest. 😂😂 Don’t pick them apart too much or you’ll damage them beyond repair. Seven years in.
Thank you for your information ❤️ my granddaughter has a head full of lint. I detoxed her hair yesterday and of course it did nothing 🤦🏾♀️ so tweezers it is 😫❤️
Ah you're welcome! I wish there was another way!! 😫
Brush the build up out... And I sleep on a silk pillow case.. as well as watch what clothing I wear.. especially when you loc has length
I love how you mentioned the quality name I thought of here when I watched ur video
Thank you for sharing this because I just started my loc journey and im watching for lint now.
Oh you’re welcome! Yess now you can definitely be preventative!
Oils and other products used to “moisturize” locs also attract lint.
Yes definitely!
Here watching. I have sister locs
Thank you so much for this. I was afraid of the ACV rinse but getting ready to do it. However now that I realize by your video mine is lint, I am going to clean my locs one at a time and work the lint out with a small needle or tooth pick. I’ll do a good wash first.
Sally’s has a build up remover that breaks down build up without harming your hair
Hmm, thank you for that! Do you remember the name by any chance?

I have to do this to my son Hair. He have alot of lit. I been trying to get it out. Couldn’t get it out at all so I’m a try this.
Aw yes, just be super careful!
I have lint mostly on the bottom of my hair . I dyed it brown but no bleach but I can see it more . When my hair grows I’m thinking bout cutting the ends because I’m afraid if I take the lint out myself my locs won’t look the same because it’s really stuck .
Thanks for this video --I'm 4years in and saw a little lint the other day that I will be getting out
Yes, you're welcome!
i get what you mean but i’ve also tried tweezers and man it ruins your loc you have to get a crochet hook to close the loc back up
Hmm I have to look into that because yes girl the locs are not pleased with this method at allll
No lent, no build up, I was my locks twice a week and my locks are beautiful 🤩
Mildew ?
Nice! Good to know!
Twice a week? That's insane
If you have a repair tool you can strengthen the Locs. It’s better than nothing. I rather pick the lint out and use the tool to repair.
Right, I haven’t had a repair tool handy but that’s a great idea.
I'm going through that now. Idk if it's lint or buildup, but it has to go! 😖
Girl a messsss!
@@iammorganalexis A whole mess! I'm so tempted to cut them. I'm going to try the acv soak again, and probably dye them black, and see if that works.

Girl I did the short back on my locks and the lint started forming again at the back! I coloured and coloured and it just kept becoming visible. I eventually combed my locks out and rocked my curls. Shaved my head and grew it out again and then started my love journey again and here I am watching RUclips videos on how to get rid of the lint build up

I already know I’m just going to dye the lint lol I won’t let this freak me out too bad. If you detox and wash your hair then it’s clean. The lint is annoying but what can you do without damaging your locs ?
Dying them and and being pro active at this point which looks like brushing them routinely.
Girl where did you get the hair pool tub situation? Lol
I ordered mine from Amazon 😊
Lol yup I got it from amazon, I linked it in the description box!
That’s so interesting dying your hair did not work so many people suggest it but right now I refuse to dye my hair! I’ve tweezed some lint out of my hair and I think this definitely hurt a few of my locs its pretty frustrating
Girl tell me about it but yeaaa idk I definitely will just be brushing my locs more often from here on out to prevent it from happening again.
Dying doesn't get rid of the lint, it only covers it temporarily...
Use Dawn dish soap!! U can do avc and when the buildup come to the surface then use Dawn dish soap
This is exactly what I use to control buildup. I use any lemon based dishwasher I see to wash and it takes care.
Dawn helps with product build up, not lint. Lint is from fibres that rub against our locs
@Leopardess for the tweezer thing.

Wow! it’s a struggle!
Yea its like it only comes out when you pick it out. And idk what to do and i actually want to cry. Im going to put a rinse on it and see how it works. Cuz i dont think its buildup from products
I don't understand why the hair color didn't dye the lint
This makes sense…absolutely.
Soak not just rinse
I’ve had locs 4 years. I never had a lint issue. But I never put products in my hair other than spraying with rose water daily. I don’t always cover my hair up at night either. And never experienced lint. I just wonder where does all this lint build up come from.
I guess some hair attract more lint than others. So frustrating cuz i basically don't use any products, rose water and water spray still get lint
Yea I think it’s always down to everyone’s different experiences with it.
Cheap clothes where material frays easy. Since loving my hair I pay attention to the kinds of fabric I wear to avoid the lint problem
Do you cover your locs while sleeping ?
Mines not lint, it was a bad shampoo I used that didn't get rinsed out then I mistakenly used the blow dryer. I have tried every kind of detox and dish soap and it's not going anywhere. 😢😢😢 I can't wear my hair loose because it looks gross. After 2 years I'm gonna have to shave it
