I became a mermaid away before I knew you could actually wear tails I was absolutely obsessed with trying to become a mermaid before I knew they existed which was around like seven and this all began when I was seven I had gotten the idea if no one has made them I will make them myself Are used to steam with my grandmother of how we could make one. I never got to actually get to make one fully with her, but when I was around eight or nine I created what I called my prototype it was made of cardboard and old bojangle box neon pink duct tape and glitter. When I was 10 I figured out you could buy mermaid tails but my mom won’t let me get one with them on open so I got this $30 very glittery black tail skin and just played with it in my bathtub and trampoline.......at about the age of 13 I got my first ever fin fun and yea that lasted me three years and it lead to now I am looking into getting my first mertailor tail (I am 16) and trying to get my mom to try the Monofin of my finfun. 😆💕😂
Wow you have such a strong mermaid story. I'm still working on my story. What started it for me was Disney's The Little Mermaid. My first tail wasn't a swimmable tail. When I was around 4 or 5 my mom took her paper groceries bags and made me a mermaid tail. Through out my life I've always held my love of mermaids. Including seeing a show in lake George that had a mermaid in It. She had a red fabric tail that I loved. It wasn't until college that I learned about the mermaid community. I made my first swimming tail in my dorm room. My college allowed me to swim with it in there pool thankfully. I've made one other land fabric tail. Im currently waiting for my first custom tail that I ordered from a tail maker. Eventually I'd love to go to a mermaid meet up. I've only talked with a few other mers online and im afraid I'll not know what to say once I get there. I thank you for your videos you've made throughout the years. I can't wait for the next step of my mermaid story.

Im drying out :( our pool is closed due to quarantine and its terrible. Kamloops is starting to warm up but the lakes are still wayyyy to cold to swim in. We're all going crazy here!

My journey began before I even knew what mermaiding was. I’ve always loved the ocean and would spend the whole day swimming and my grandma and grandpa(during the summers I’d spend up at my grandparents and they live on a lake) would watch this 5 year old swim. Around the same time my grandpa fell ill and sadly it affected me and I didn’t realize. And I turned to my swimming as an outlet. Around 11 I saw a video of these girls in finfun tails! And that had me get a blue tail, and that... that got my grandpa and his nurse, both supported me and would sit outside and watch me swim. It was so good to have my grandpa happy as I never talkative child to him and I do greatly regret that. My nickname went from “Goldie locks” to “little fishie” shortly after that year of joy he passed.
I kept swimming in it as it reminded me of my grandpa and it brought me joy. Also that feeling of becoming one with the water really sent my heart pounding it’s an amazing feeling.
Recently due to money issues and having the mahina, I made my own tail. My girl, my savior, the queen fishie, your tail making has saved me so much trouble! Even though it’s a little tight around my legs it’s absolutely beautiful it’s what I wanted.
Every story/journey is different and some are simpler and some are more emotional but don’t realize it down the road.
I got my sister into mermaiding my other sister thinks it’s stupid but hey, eat my BUBBLES!!! :D
I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now and have been so encouraged and inspired by you to not give up on my own mermaid dreams. I absolutely loved hearing your journey. I first found Hannah Fraser when I was about 7, 8ish, the shipwreck video, and realized that it was totally possible to be a mermaid. Maaany hard years later, my Finis competitor monofin breaks on my last swim, just a couple months back. And as much as I'm still REALLY sad about it 😅 I've revised my ideas and designed a custom fin I'll be making. Can't stop a mermaid 👏👏

I'm sitting here watching this video again and crying with you. Mermaiding has been so magical and healing for me. I just can't even describe the wonder that is mermaiding. I used the Finis Wave when I was a kid, and I watched Mermaid Sasha's "How to make a mermaid tail" tutorial over and over hoping one day I could have a mermaid tail. I "grew out of" mermaiding because I thought I was supposed to, based on what I had to do to survive in the environment I was in. Less than a year ago, as I started to listen to my heart more, I pulled out my Finis Wave again, after probably 7 years without mermaiding. I later discovered the Luna, and the feeling of a silicone fin gave me that feeling of BEING a mermaid as you said. Now less than a year later, I am so much more established. Mermaiding was healing in that it keeps proving to me that following my heart leads to beautiful, good, marvelous things (after toxic evangelicalism told me that my heart was deceitful and desperately wicked). So yeah. It's real magic. I just can't even.

I almost think monofins are like wedding dresses, like on Say Yes to the Dress. When you try certain fins, it's just right and awesome, and that's different for everybody.

I'm in the process of becoming one. I own 3 tails, from different brands, and I bought a lot of fabric to saw one of my own. I'm absolutely obsessed with this big project. Mermaiding makes me feel like I can finally be good at something. 😊 the only thing that is missing now is water to swim in...😅 pools accept us only if we're an association, and lakes are too cold for me.😅 hopefully summer is coming so I might be able to swim as a mermaid soon. Let's hope so.😊

Hi, I've been watching your videos and many others, but honestly, I'm stuck. I'm deciding whether or not to get a mermaid tail, especially since I'm going to high school next year. I actually live in Vancouver as well, so I'm pretty happy about that! I'm thinking of buying a mermaid tail for vacations and what not, but I'm afraid I will get picked on next year for having one if someone finds out. I've watched POTC and I fell in love with mermaids, and I've come across a few tails! It's just, they're expensive and I don't know if kids will think I'm weird or something. I really want one, but people have been telling me I'll get bullied for having such a stupid thing, and honestly I'm fine with that. The Mertailor tails are so nice and I'd like to get one, but I'm just afraid of the social part if I get one. I take things personally, and yes, being a mermaid makes me feel calm. I feel like I will get judged, so I'm still stuck on that part. What should I do?

DO NOT LET ANYONE'S OPINION STOP YOU!
Like Courtney says, you do you. Be true to yourself. Mermaiding is fun, exercises the imagination, the body, it's a kind of flowing meditation that lets you rebalance. It's creative. Humans have solved problems for millennia by using creativity, thinking outside the box, using imagination. This is NOT just for little girls, it is for anyone, any age, any size, color, gender, gender ID, whatever. It requires skills (swimming, safety, breath-holding like a good free diver), it develops strength (core strength!), agility, grace (yeah, you are working on your "superpowers"), and if anyone thinks it's silly, they're just being a troll and you don't need them.
You can keep it as simple as a monofin and leggings, or get a fabric tail (much safer and easier to use than silicone). If you're in Vancouver you could meet up with Courtney and crew... I'm on a minimal budget and use the Fin Fun stuff, though if I had the money, I'd get one of Courtney's creations in a heartbeat! The Luna is fabulous and flowy, the Mahina is larger and more powerful (and harder to fit into skins), I personally love the Linden, inexpensive and agile and fast, fits my big wide feet, and fits in the Fin Fun stuff. Or anything Courtney makes!
Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming....

For me being a mermaid means a good chunk of my depression goes away. Unfortunately i outgrew my tail, and cant afford a new one *cries*
I've found some good leggins at thrift shops, even a mermaid pair. Combined with fins or a monofin, it's pretty darn mermaidy! Just use fin and leggings until you can save up for a tailskin.

@lana starzinska I get what you mean. There were no pods near me, so I am working on making my own. Besides, I'd say that you already have your own pod. There is no rule on how large a pod can be, trust me. I started my own pod with just my one friend, and now her sister has joined in! If you are the only pod in Ireland, that means your pod is the best! 😁

I've always been a mermaid and didn't know it. The archetype I recognized, reading Lord of the Rings, was the Elves, which I tried to play in D&D, my own writing, science fiction conventions, and living history. But as a kid my Pennsylvania German relatives referred to mischevious kids as "nix-nook" or nixies... cough cough, the water horse in Frozen 2 is a Nokk...same thing. A water spirit.
Despite my dryland farmer upbringing, I dragged my parents kicking and screaming to the lake, then to Assateague Island. Inspired by Sea Hunt (waaaaaaaay before you-all's time) I got fins and a dive mask and backrolled off rafts in the pool. Then some dude named Patrick Duffy showed up on TV as The Man From Atlantis and I copied his dolphin/merman kick.
I mostly swam that way for the next couple decades, except when scuba diving... the tank tends to bonk the back of your head if you do the mermaid kick.
Then my cousin got a tail, and I was like, "waht? mermaiding is a thing?"
Um, yeah... I will not admit to how much stuff I acquired...

I just really want to make a silicone tail but I'm saving up money for a drawing tablet but I think I will make a fabric one first because it's not as complex as a silicone tail
I keep rewatching your videos...and watching your beginning...one word i have to say tho that...MEEEEE i started out that way 😂😂😂😂 id go to the beach...pull out some leggings...wear my swim flippers and tuck my ankles into the leggings and a bit over my flippers (because i bought the leggings from a thrift store a bigger size) and that was my beggining as a mermaid...
i swam like that for two full summers 😂😂 until we made my green fabric tail for this summer ( 2020 )...but it became black because the scales on the print just faded out and the threads started wearing away litterally melted away 😂
so now im buying the underwater pheonix from mertailor...wich is the fantasea fin two 😂😂😂😂😂 IM SOOOO EXCITEDDD! Any tips pleaaase let me know!

I started out about 6 or 7 years ago, I think, when I was about 7 or 8. I was watching something with my mom? I guess? I dont know exactly what happened, but we got an ad from swimtails, and I fell in LOVE. I had no idea? Really? About what I was getting myself into, I also didnt know how to research things, so I see one ad for a mermaid tail brand and THATS the brand that exists in my head, that's it. SO! I start looking through the mermaid tails they have and I choose this one, my mom has decided that I dont need a full fluke, I should just use their "sport tail" option. So I find this one, it's bright pink and yellow, and I choose it. I still have it, actually! Anyways, I live in this condo by this lake, and we have a pool (ya know, like for all of the condo owners to use, idk there's probably a name but it was a condo neighborhood?? System? I know there was a condo board, and it was gated, I was 7 and I dont live there anymore so idk) so I start swimming in this pool and I am obsessed for about a year, I end up getting to swim in the shallow area of the lake, it's a ball. Then I forget about it, basically. Then about 2 or 3 years later, I am like 10 or something, I find out about mermaiding again, I find mermaid youtube, and I find a video from FaithOnTheBass (now MerdmaidFaith!) And I find out about finfun, so I choose a tail from there, and I save up, and I get it! It's been almost 5 years, and now I have a mertailor tail! My colors have changed from bright pink, to blue and purple, to blue and gold, well, yellow, but, kinda gold-y. Mostly blue. :)
