There might be just one roadbump: you two might enjoy the trip that much that you will do this more often. And then - no free trip, because the Beemer will stay.
If theres one thing i love about this channel, is the self-awareness. Taking jabs at yourself is funny and adds a bit of humility to a video. Nice vid :)
I had the same shifting issue until Yoda told me to… Pre-load the shifter and then make the shift between 3500-4000 rpm. I pre-load the shift on everything I ride now. Just a thought. Congrats on the bike!! And your lady friend will love the passenger accommodations!
Apart from the fact, that they do fall apart at around 60k kms or sooner, depending on the usage. In Europe, BMW dealers will fit a new one for you for free at every 60k, and for the 1300GS every 80k kms, but for that you will have to pay. Bit of a shame that drive shafts are now considered consumables. Having said that, as a 1250GSA owner, I still love these damn things.
Also consider a Maxi scooter for long trips, they are super confortable, have huge built-in storage, powerful enough, easy to use, after having owned and ridden more than 40 motorcycles in the last 12 years, i've bought myself a burgman 400 and didn't look back, maybe i'll change for the 650 when fully loaded with passenger on long trips
Regarding not starting in gear, you need to take the clutch sensor switch out, clean it, and put it back. If that doesn't work, you might need to replace it, most likely.
Thanks for including conversions for your US audience! Also, a decent substitute for cruise control could be an aftermarket throttle lock, or a clip-on "Cramp Buster" throttle assist
You should 3D print a simple cruise control that goes on your throttle twist….I now have cruise control on my 85 interceptor! I always carry a few extra because people always want one when they see mine.
Love the content. And welcome to the BMW family sir. Im sure now that you've had a taste of the "good life" that you'll be back to the BMW fam after to sell the GS with another one. 😁 I Look forward to the rest of this series. I will recommend that you try doing a motorcycle camping trip. Hammocks for beds and your portable coffee maker.
As usual an EXCELLENT informative and amusing video. You are a REAL pro at this . Thanks for the 21 minutes of fun. (I would find the same for twice the price in CDN dollars)
This looks like it’ll shape up to be a great video series. Sadly here is South Africa bike prices are quite high, and getting a decent bike is challenging, not to mention how some sellers must be on drugs with the prices they expect for their 20yr old junk.
The cheapest way to take a motorcycle trip is to become a big youtuber and to get invited to motorcycle launches where you can lie and giggle, like a little girl, everytime you accelerate. Also you have to mention that the current model is way better than the older model although they only changed the headlight or the dash.
Idk, I just pack my things and start riding, doesn't matter it it's to school or across the country, it is a vehicle just like a car, it's made to go places.
The question is not so much "can I get a trip for free?", but instead: "Will you actually want to sell the GS after the trip?" My money is on you keeping for longer.
Looking forward to the next videos in this series. But... adding value to motorcycle by adding your efforts; that sounds suspiciously like normal work - but with extra steps? 😀
Tip for a good trip. Buy a 750cc 80s Japanese bike and daily drive it for half a year, fix every problem that it gets in that time span, and try to come up with solutions where you don't buy spare parts. You are now prepared to take on every challenge that trip throws at you. Reasoning: 1. it's an old bike, if it still lives, that tells you alot about the quality. 2. you have gained most of the necessary experience in fixing and maintenance on that bike. A good choice is something like 83' Suzuki GSX 750 ES or 82' honda CB 750 four. I prefer the GSX as the engine rarely cause trouble, but if it falls on the left side, the engine is done.
Hey please make a video about Coasting on a motorcycle is good or bad, by holding the clutch for a long time in down hill or should we use engine braking and loose momentum.
You got that 1200GS for under 6K so if you look at prices in europe you might make money if you ride it up in europe and sell it and then fly home, in sweden there are very few bikes under 11k
I'm planning a bike trip for next summer. I will not sleep in a tent, i always sleep in hotel with a good breakfast. I don't go dirt roads, i need a paved road. Does it make me less of a biker ? I think not.
Oh come on, a bike that has 30k nowadays is perfectly fine to buy! I've seen 4 year-old 1050 vstroms with almost 200,000 kms and had only one valve adjustment.
Very well put together documentary. PLEASE let your girlfriend speak for herself about her perspective on this whole trip and the comfort of the bike. If she doesn't like cameras, no worries just put a mic in her helmet to and show your perspectiv while riding as she tells us the her point of view. That would be very valuable to this whole story.
Wrap those blue panels into black. Think u can sell it easier once that is done. Also good for on the road is the cardan shaft instead of a chain, less maintenance😊.
Remember i think BMW offer free shaft drive replacement for 1200 and 1250. May be that could increase the value. Do research. I like the script for this video.
Respectfully I completely disagree! It's a fun challenge for him as well as a great way to create a very compelling video I think we should all push ourselves to achieve little challenges, they make life much more interesting In setting certain expectations insures we don't make it too easy or too hard, just enough for it to be a fun challenge
For the regular, non RUclips content creator, sure…. However, when you have 225k subscribers and you’re looking for content, this is actually a smart idea. Chase an idea, see whether it works, get a trip out of it, make a video, and (over time) make some YT money + QuadLock sponsorship. In all, very smart, and also very well filmed and constructed.
Hi man, love the vids. One small correction. The first r1200gs liquid cooled is 2009, however its 1 model older then the 1 you got for this trip. Lastly, you mention it was a shame you didnt get the adventure model, however, the gsa is quite bigger and heavier. Good luck, have fun!
OK I'll be that guy... add getting your girlfriend some proper shoes into your budget 🙏Also, 30 deg C = 86 F. Awesome vid tho and looking forward to EP 2
I was turned off by quad-lock because they will sell you the thing to keep your phone attached to your bike.. but if you want it working at the end of the ride... well that will be an addition $25 please.
Thoughts from a cheap old b*strd: Best way to "add value" is to focus on the bikes that need Something and then make them need Nothing. Obviously, this requires mechanic skills and I'm old enough that I have no issues with points (or carbs), I don't touch bikes with more electronics than a digital ignition and that skews things, a lot. Second, don't get too focused on engine size or hp ~ my wife and I have toured (2 weeks, about 5k miles ~ we're about 350lbs combined thanks to my hulking mass) on a ~30hp Ninja250. The trick is simply fewer miles in a day, longer stops... basically, stop and smell the roses. That's the fix for your lack of creature comforts too.... I've never has cruise control, best I've experienced is the John Deere throttle-lock (big yellow o-ring). Anyway, I've paid for my entire motorcycling life, everything from bikes to gear and gas, though fixing up "ran when parked" bikes. Normal motorcycles that are down due to age/neglect tend to need about $500, most of that in tires, and 10~15 hours of time doing Basic servicing. I routinely profit $1000~1500 (so earn about $100/hour as a mechanic)... but since that's not my job, just for fun, it feels like free money. And BMW's are tractors, the GSes eat transmissions and final drives.... barely escaped my one experience without losing money (trans exploded 40 miles from the closest paved road and ~8 hours from home). I don't like them, wouldn't recommend them to anyone and wish you the best of luck that it doesn't ruin your fun too much (because it will, just have to wait to see how much).
As I tell my wife, its not a job if I'm having fun. Its a lot of fun buying a bike that needs a little work and you sell it in better condition than when you bought it.
Mega excited for this! As much as I love all your other content, a proper bike trip but with a challenge in mind is awesome! I almost hope this becomes a regular thing! Maybe even buy a non runner to fix up and do a trip on and sell!
Good choice for your needs, there's a reason they are so popular. I have one just like it. It has now done 114.000km and carried me 40.000km in one go across all of Europe. A few observations: -It should be able to start in gear. With the clutch fully pulled and the sidestand up, it should fire up. If not your clutch-microswitch is defective. Its not that expensive and very easy to swap. -The cruise control can be retrofitted quite easily. It's just a matter of swapping the left switchgear and coding the bike. Perhaps you could find the switches used, change them yourself (You'll need a Torx T8 screwdriver btw) and then have an enthusiast or a dealer help you code it.
That's an amazing deal. Someone else already commented that here in the US that bike would be $10k+. Looks to be in great shape though and very low miles for one of those. Should be a great option for touring especially if in mixed conditions or over less-than-ideal roads. If it makes you feel good, my '01 R1150GS is at 146k miles and starts like it's brand new every time, tough bikes.
Love that your finally doing thr trip you've always wanted. After learning to ride on one of my father-in-law's bike i bought my own in January. That April i went on my first 300 mile solo trip. My parents thought i was crazy for doing that without someone just in case something happened. I didnt think of any of that when i did the trip. It was completely out of my comfort zone but it was amazing. Ive been doing that stuff noe for about 5 years now.
Biggest example of location determined pricing. < 6k for this where you are. Here in the US this would be a 11-12k bike minimum.
I went to marketplace immediately and was disappointed when I saw them for 12 lol
There might be just one roadbump: you two might enjoy the trip that much that you will do this more often. And then - no free trip, because the Beemer will stay.
This is my number 1 concern lol. But I'm going to stick to the plan!
IMO The best thing about the bike is the shaft drive as there is no chain maintenance to worry about.
170K km is a still a good bike
tourers have a lot more life in them then a lil super high revving 2/4 stroke on steroids
Cool Video Idea i liked it
and In the clutch lever is a switch when its broken you can only start in neutral
Can't wait to see how this whole adventure works out. Good luck!
You are doing well, other people tat overthink this much would probably never ride
You should 3D print a simple cruise control that goes on your throttle twist….I now have cruise control on my 85 interceptor! I always carry a few extra because people always want one when they see mine.
Enjoy the trip , it’s a fun experience , not saying you won’t have some anxiety about doing it , I know I did even if it’s exciting & enjoyable.
Fantastic experiment! I can’t wait to see how it works out.
And as usual top level entertainment!
Love the content. And welcome to the BMW family sir. It’s probably going to be more difficult to sell the GS than initially planned.
As usual an EXCELLENT informative and amusing video. You are a REAL pro at this . Thanks for the 21 minutes of fun. (I would find the same for twice the price in CDN dollars)
Nice challenge, looking forward to the end result.
Going through all different types of bike on your channel is awesome!!!
Keep on keeping on!
This looks like it’ll shape up to be a great video series.
Sadly here is South Africa bike prices are quite high, and getting a decent bike is challenging, not to mention how some sellers must be on drugs with the prices they expect for their 20yr old junk.
Whenever you do your upload I am always glued hahaha miss home! Ride safe brother

So true.😂

I love your adventures, bud! Go on!!
I think I saw you at the Wimpy near Villiers today? I wasn't sure but when you got up and left I recognized your helmet😅
Great idea for a challenge! Looking forward to seeing the trip!
Looks like a great series ahead.
Reason #2 kept me stuck for 10 years. Once I started, though, could not stop anymore. My advice, just do it.
Looking forward to the next videos in this series. But... adding value to motorcycle by adding your efforts; that sounds suspiciously like normal work - but with extra steps? 😀
Dude what a great idea for a video, you might have convinced me to buy this bike.
This video just gave me the confidence to ride from NYC to TX
i have the same idea but i never get it to done. think i can learn a thing or two from this.
Really loving this series so far! Will happily wait for the rest!

Hey please make a video about Coasting on a motorcycle is good or bad, by holding the clutch for a long time in down hill or should we use engine braking and loose momentum.
In Québec we pay 10% taxes on vehicule transfert that are less than 10 years old, so profit goes in the bin
Maybe a wrap with some new colours could add some value

Its funny, that every bike that passed you was a gs of some sort xD
buy the bike on autumn, sell it at spring
Oh come on, a bike that has 30k nowadays is perfectly fine to buy! I've seen 4 year-old 1050 vstroms with almost 200,000 kms and had only one valve adjustment.
That blue is nice...
haha, Harties trip ♥
My man just discovered the flipping market
In my country 1200 gs price is $70.000
Same gs in EU is twice the price :D
I don't think she's gonna like being called "quite big" ;)
My previous Ducati was my most reliable bike, and the current one hasn't let me down yet...
bro called his gf big in his video, how is he still alive 💀
The best thing about BMW bikes is their resale value.
Wow they really get you on insurance there.
Very well put together documentary. PLEASE let your girlfriend speak for herself about her perspective on this whole trip and the comfort of the bike. If she doesn't like cameras, no worries just put a mic in her helmet to and show your perspectiv while riding as she tells us the her point of view.

Cool idea for a vídeo 👍
how bikes are so cheap in south africa? maybe i should move there.
Please do!
Get earplugs if your ears are ringing, above a certain level hearing damage is cumulative
In Portugal that bike cost more than 10.000€ !
Amazing content!
No super tenere 1200? :)
New upload !!!!
5400 USD for a liquid cooled post 2013 BMW 1200gs with 67k km is ludicrous cheap, here they cost around 10k €
That makes me feel better lol
They're 10-12k USD here in the states too 😭
Saw a BMW S1000r for $8800 less than 10K miles just this week.
Wrap those blue panels into black. Think u can sell it easier once that is done. Also good for on the road is the cardan shaft instead of a chain, less maintenance😊.
Im definitely excuse #1 😂
Keep uploading❤
Like! gorgeous content, farewell. 😇
bro really went off road with street tires and then be like "it doesnt do so well off road"
Remember i think BMW offer free shaft drive replacement for 1200 and 1250. May be that could increase the value. Do research. I like the script for this video.
I thought he was in the single club like most of us bikers 🙃
man casually discovers "working"
Why is insurance soo f high, like dammm mine is 120$ a YEAR
What filter do you use for your camera? 1/2 black mist?
bike was incredibly cheap, in central europe these are worth LOT more
Prime example of overthinking a very simple thing... Making yourself too comfy is detrimental to the experience.
Absolutely! But if that’s what gets me on the road then it’s worth it lol
Respectfully I completely disagree!
It's a fun challenge for him as well as a great way to create a very compelling video

Itchy boots has been riding her 300 in Africa without considering many boxes and you are wasting time :P
What mount did you have on rs125?
Clutch mount
Why do people not include the free labour and hours invested in that equation?
It's not labour but experience
OK I'll be that guy... add getting your girlfriend some proper shoes into your budget 🙏Also, 30 deg C = 86 F. Awesome vid tho and looking forward to EP 2
its not
Ek sou ander woorde gehaad het.... As net "rude" 🤣😂
Check with bmw if you are eligible for the free new driveshaft
Quick correction, 30c = 86f
✌🏻😊
I'm insulted by that comment on Moto Guzzi
Lol, your girlfriend is some thing BIG? You sure you don't want to re edit this video? 😅
Will let you know when she watches it lol
The cheapest way to do a motorcycle trip is to not take your GF with.

New upload lesgooo
I don't understand this money problem and needing extra space for a girlfriend. Sell your girlfriend, buy a bike. Solution 😂
Not starting in gear is the clutch micro switch. Clean and or adjust. Chat to the guys at Bavarian in Centurion.
You want this sorted.
Looking forward to the next one! This was really well put together!
Ah yes a quick coffee asmr, lovely
You are GENIUS!
Love that your finally doing thr trip you've always wanted. After learning to ride on one of my father-in-law's bike i bought my own in January. That April i went on my first 300 mile solo trip. my guy, you can touch the ground just fine😆 I can't. And i've been on gravel, with a passenger on my cbr600rr. You shouldn't worry🫶
