    Ingredients Needed:
    Your favorite Italian Sausage (we used Johnsonville in this video)
    Sliced Green Peppers (we used two large)
    Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
    Minced Garlic, 1 heaping teaspoon
    Italian/French Style Bread
    Oregano 1/2 teaspoon
    Basil 1/2 teaspoon
    Olive Oil
    Salt and Pepper
    Giardiniera - Here's a link to some: amzn.to/2L3OkZ0
    Directions:
    FOR THE PEPPERS: You want to start these FIRST because they take a bit!
    Place sliced peppers in a frying/saucepan with a generous amount of olive oil to coat the peppers and the pan. Cook these on VERY LOW HEAT and add the oregano, basil, salt and peppers, then stir well. About half way through the cook (roughly 30 minutes) add the garlic (this keeps it from burning). Continue to stir this occasionally and watch so the they don't burn/wilt. This can take 6-120 minutes depending on how tender you want the peppers but be sure to stay patient and allow them to cook SLOWLY! You'll be rewarded for your patience in the end.
    FOR THE SAUSAGE: Pre-heat your grill/smoker to 225 degrees Fahrenheit and cook until done. These will take approximately 45-60 minutes if they ARE NOT FROZEN. Be sure not to over cook them! We do NOT want the skin to break as this is what makes the magic in cooking them low and slow this way. Be sure they are done, but don't overcook or use higher heat. Once done it's time to build a sandwich!
    FOR THE SANDWICH: Slice your bread open for the sausage and place a layer of mozzarella cheese at the bottom. Now, place the sausage into the bread and add your beautiful (hopefully) sweet peppers (green), add giardiniera (optional) then top with more cheese! Now, carefully wrap these in foil loosely with a tented area at the top to keep the cheese away from the foil (this will RUIN YOUR SANDWICH!). Place them back on the smoker for 10-15 minutes until the cheese melts, unwrap and ENJOY!!
    FOR THE OPTIONAL TOMATO SALAD: Add two small packages (I think the were 12oz approximately) of grape tomatoes into a bowl, thinly slice one large onion, slice and half one cucumber and add to the bowl. In a separate small bowl, add one cup olive oil, one half cup red wine vinegar, one teaspoon of basil, one teaspoon of oregano and a heaping tablespoon of minced garlic. Mix together well and pour on top of the tomato mixture. Now, mix well and add salt/pepper to taste. Allow this to sit in the fridge covered for at least an hour to allow the flavors to shake hands. Stir before serving and ENJOY!!

    What temp did you cook the peppers at, and for how long? Also, what kind of bread did you use? The small recipes would be great to see as well. Another great video, that I can't wait to try!

    • @EverydayBBQ
      @EverydayBBQ  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks, Dave! Very low heat on the peppers. The temperature in my setting was around 200°F but preferably I would like it lower that was as low as my cooktop would go. As far as Bread goes, choose something to your preference but good quality.

    Have to give you an update on this one, boss. Just did this. Didn't have the better bread but a hoagie roll worked splendid. I used olive oil and garlic on the bread to get a good crisp. Grilled peppers and onion are the way to go with the garlic. I used fresh mozzarella and parmesan cheese but I melted it on the flag top! Another crisp layer. When the Cubs make it back to the World Series this is my Game 1 go-to. Thanks!

    If you have a small side dish or add on you should just include it with the main part of the video. I mean it can't add that much time and we can see what goes into prepping the whole meal. So if you are making the tomato salad or whatever include that I know I for one will watch it and I'm betting everyone else will too. (I could be wrong I'm just one guy who likes to cook. And then eat what I cooked. And then watch the internet and get more good things to cook!) Thanks as always for sharing!

    Hey Mike. I know you are "downstate", so instead of Johnsonville, I HOGHLY recommend Marettas. They make them in Leonore, but sell them at Hi-Vee and Save-A-Lot in LaSalle-Peru. Keep your vids coming. Really enjoying them!

    Ok I need to tell you that I will be trying this soon but I will have to admit that I will be putting some sliced onions in with the peppers, sorry. I am ordering some of the jardinaire and trying that also, never heard of that so I am looking forward to trying that. Shorter videos would be great for ideas at work, you know we have to eat at work also, haha

    Adding these sweet peppers to my slow cooker Italian Beef this weekend - my mom and my daughter can't handle the hot Giardiniera

    • @PSpurgeonCubFan
      @PSpurgeonCubFan 4 года назад

      might actually toss the sweet peppers in with the Beef toward the end of the cook in the slow cooker to soften em up and infuse them with beef juice

    I love the video- hell- ALL of them that you make Mike. Big fan I am. I feel bad that you have to use Johnsonville- I just find them to be loaded grease grenades ready to explode into a grease fire every time they sit over direct heat. I know to say that is sacrilege to day that in the Midwest but I am just NOT a fan. Sorry corporate Wisconsin but I'll take any local butcher's Italian sausage over Johnsonville any day of the week.

    • @Bob.Loblaw.Bob.Loblaw

      Mike- have you ever been to Johnnie's Beef in Elmwood?

    • @EverydayBBQ
      @EverydayBBQ  6 лет назад

      I usually look for homemade or butcher sausage but couldn’t find anything great. Johnsonville is not too shabby when you’re in a pinch. This was actually outstanding. The trick is the cooking technique.
      Been to Johnny’s so many times I can’t count lol. Best beef sandwich by far in the area. Always used to go there when I was a kid and big Johnny was still around. Loved how he called out the orders. Something I’ll never forget. They’ve also got the best Italian ice around!
      Cheers 🍻
