You mentioned that the Vibratone is all mids so you're running it in stereo with a separate amp for the lows and highs. The rub against an unmodulated signal is part of the magic, just like a chorus pedal is a vibrato signal mixed with a dry one. Even if the leslie cab was full frequency, you'd want another fixed speaker to go with it.
We can see the excitement and joy it brings you from the expressions on your face throughout the whole video. Always a Class-Act Eric! New inspiration. I expect there will be many more post it notes made with ideas, Happy Friday!
"Everything is a little bit broken all the time." My lord that hit me in the feels. I spent several years as a service advisor at motorcycle and power equipment repair shops, and never figured out how to say that so succinctly.
Eric. That cab is soo cool. 20 years ago I got a Leslie cab from a yard sale. I’m an electrician & I wired up a variable speed control on a pedal. Best sound in the room ever. But obviously it’s not practical to bring extra cabs and pedals and power cables to gigs. I have owned 5 different “Leslie” pedals over the years. Best compromise I’ve had is the Fender Pinwheel pedal running into 2 combos positioned 2 foot apart and angled back at you in the middle. It can ramp up, down & brake with the foot switches. Also can expression pedal but honestly the foot switches once set up at the right speeds are more than enough control to sound “real”. Favorite effect ever. You can also hit the brake and have a very lush chorus. Not much I can say other than wow. I’m ok with things being a little bit broken. Words to live by!!
I absolutely love the Pinwheel. Part of me is like, what if this is how I play guitar now? Lol. Only playing with the Leslie sound is of course ridiculous. But is it though ???
I’m so sorry you’re not feeling well! I hope you’re taking plenty of time to rest and being good to yourself! Thank you for sharing this super cool cabinet with us! Thanks Eric!✌️😌🎸
That sounded great through headphones. There's plenty of guitar channels on youtubes but your channel along with Chris Buck and Colin on Guitaristas always make me want to play and improve. I'm just getting into your caged course and its already changing the way I think about and play guitar. Thanks, brother.
4:07: "It would be stupid not to play some Pink Floyd with this setup." That's what I was thinking from the opening note! And yeah, even beamed through cyberspace to arrive on my little screen, the sound is a lot bigger and fuller and cooler than my phaser pedal. Can't imagine ever owning one of these, but then I'm used to living vicariously through you! I hope you recover good and quick from The Virus.
Glad you're recovering Eric and and have a new fun toy. I was worried that you were down with Covid last week, since no Friday video. It got me for the first time 3 weeks ago, too.
I just repaired my Motionsound Pro 3 which is a rotary combo amp and had a similar problem with high speeds. It took me forever to figure out the problem, I thought the horn was moving, but actually a plastic disk under the horn slid down about 2mm and was rubbing on a bolt head. So my advice, if it's still doing that, would be to look for any evidence of things rubbing near the baffle. Good luck, sounds great!
Man, those open strings at 4:46 sounds incredible. I almost picked one of these up in Wilmington NC for $400 and passed because I couldn’t fit it in the car. Wish I went back!
I randomly ended up with a Vibratone about 8 years ago. Due to the baffle’s rotation and the design of the cab, I describe it as basically throwing sound around the room. So it is pretty amazing in that sense. It sounds to me like what chorus pedals copied. It sounds like a 3 D chorus on low speed. On high speed it sounds like “Cold Shot” - the solo. Mine has a nice late ‘60s Jensen 10” speaker in it. You kind of alluded to it - it has a crossover device that sends the mids to the Vibratone, and everything else to the amp’s speakers. Kind of weird. Mine came with a SF Twin Reverb that had factory gold foil JBLs. Somebody in HS around ‘70 got a nice rig, and I ended up with it 45 years later.
My similar "amazing in the room" sound is using the deco in wide stereo mode w/ 2 amps. Or, using two amps, but one gets a vibrato pedal (TC tailspin). so good. Vibratone sounds A++
Eric , with cover off you can determine if out of balance noise is coming from misappropriated weight distribution ; ie like balancing a car or bike tire, or out of round, by holding a stationary object , like a pencil; on a firm stand(stack of books) near the outer edge. You will also be able to determine if the wobble is horizontal or vertical or both. If it rolls true then it may likely be a worn out bearing or shaft race, eyeball the center hub for wear and slop). Being old and basically styrofoam it could be combination of all. But it is doable to rebalance. Or it could be drive gear at motor. That may be a deeper dive. Peace and be well. Those tones are good medicine.
I have a Yamaha RA-100 that has two rotating speakers and two fixed 12” speakers. As great as these sound recorded, the sound in the room is indescribably magical.
Just an FYI; these units were mass produced by Leslie in a few iterations (probably far more went into home organs than into these guitar-oriented cabs), and the construction standards can vary a great deal. The 'rub' you're getting on high could be several things, most of which could be adjusted so as to diminish the noise. Try taking the back off and running it while you watch, or else take it to an amp tech.
With all the cool lessons you have shared it was so great to see you enjoying your self with the new cabinet it put a smile on my face thanks for sharing and also for playing some pink floyd on it that was amazing 😃🙏
That's a classic sound - and a great demo. I love a bit of rotary speaker, especially in a stereo or wet-dry set-up. If I could offer a cheap alternative, the TC Electronic Vibraclone pedal is a decent emulation, including the original's lack of top-end!
I had a early Leslie G pedal that did two different Leslie and Vibratone cabinets. I just couldn't bond with it. Now I think that may be because the effect was through my amp, a Fender Princeton Reverb and not through a Leslie/Fender cabinet. The sound through the guitar amp lacked dimension and depth. I might have to look for a Vibratone cabinet. These days I use a DSL Rotosim into 2 amps and the effect is good. Get better soon. You always have such great information and have helped my understanding of the guitar so much.
Yeah, a single-point sound source with a fixed speaker will never be able to fully capture or replicate the sound of a rotating speaker or rotating baffle, no matter how good the effect pedal. When the sound is physically moving around the room, it's a whole other level of complexity and depth.
It looks like an enjoyable struggle you're having, trying to suppress that grin. The thing I always liked best about a leslie's use by good keyboard players was the slow acceleration or deceleration of the effect between the high and low speeds. I assume this slow transition is caused mechanically by the drum/rotor being quite heavy or the electric motor driving it being very underpowered. I've heard others attribute it to drive belt slippage [which would be adjustable but really maintenance intensive]. Careful mechanical inspection of the drum bearing system and balancing might locate that noise. From the shot you showed of it rotating the outer diameter is not running concentric to the axle it's on. It has large radial and likely some axial runout which will amplify an out of balance condition the faster the speed. If that eccentricity is a necessary [built in] feature of the design it may be missing balance weights that flew off and were discarded by a previous owner.
I had a Leslie 16 (same as this without the vibratone name on it) and while this sounds great definitely right in saying it doesn’t capture the magic of being in the room and feeling the sound move around you
I have noticed a lot of these have wobbly drums because I believe the styrofoam shrinks over the decades. I have a ~$20 home depot fix that will correct this issue. I cleaned the motor, oiled it, and then applied this fix and it ran like it was brand new after that. I been thinking about adding skirts that push the sound out front after it exits the sound holes.
Coollio....if one of these is not easy to find a somewhat simple and rewarding conversion is adapting a tremolo unit from an old console organ and repurpose it into this....I built 2
I love the sound! I got a Leslie 16 too! is yours quiter as the Bass/Treble box too? The highspeed is great noisy... :-D like mine. I´m happy seeing somebody making the good quality vid about like this box, i couldnt do
Grab some POCO records and plug your Pedalsteel in to that bad boy! RUSTY YOUNG who was referred by Jerry Garcia ,to Richie Furray and Jim Messina while Garcia was laying down tracks for The New Riders of the Purple Sage and rusty brought his singing drummer with him George Grantham.
If it's rattling at high speed because it's out of balance, maybe try taping a weight (like a metal nut) to various positions to smoothen it out. It worked on my high-efficiency gas furnace inducer motor, LOL. My furnace is whisper quiet now.
Getting a cool new toy like that can be addicting, there's a tendency to want to try it on everything, but in time moderation will work it's way in...or...Trower
I appreciate you mentioning multiple times "in the room" vs this is a video with audio limitations. Leslie is on my bucket list of weird instruments/music things to play with but I've never had interest in pedals or emulators because to me the whole point is the speaker spins and that's kinda crazy. Hope you get better, it was so odd having a Haugenless week. I'd like to think in some way the money I've contributed has gone to that goofy ass smile you are trying to talk past because you got an amazing new toy! I would love to see you hook the lap steel up to it even if it sounds terrible. P.S. Have you ever messed with an S-1 switch? I completely love them because they can add a boost, light overdrive, or just 5 extra tones but I just can't convince my friend they aren't a joke.
Forgive me for the stupid question but exactly how would you use this with a combo amp? I want to get one but I obviously dont want all mids. I have a 1965 Gibson Gibsonette 10 watt combo that I would use in conjunction with this but I literally cant even comprehend how I would put them together.

I've been pining for one of these. Sounds lovely, and Ballad of El Goodo is my go to 'trying out a Leslie' song.

Yay! Thanks Steve!
The CAGED course seems really simple/slow at first, but that's the idea - to leave room for the re-wiring!
Never, ever, ever ever ever did I think I would hear the “Hey Lawdy Mama” riff on RUclips! You made my day!!!
I LOVE the wolf!
I've never heard of these, but I'm deeply fascinated right now... Such a cool thing!
So neat sounding! I'm feeling Memphis 72 Chris and Alex vibes.
Love the Big Star at the beginning. So sad I missed them in Carrboro last month.
I am glad you are back and recovering Eric. Last Friday was strange, waiting for your upload and finally realising that it won‘t happen.
I’m going to have to copy those Riders on the Storm chords. Very cool. Loving your channel from Australia!!
Couldn't I just tell you what a cool find that is. Thanks for sharing, man.
Love your consistently tasty tones and style! Always learn a ton from you, and always look forward to your new videos. Thank you.
Beautiful! Ballad of el Goodo! Worth every penny!

1:01 Great to hear "Hey Lawdy Mama" in a guitar demo!
Hey man! I've just purchased your lessons. You're a super teacher, love it! Greetings from Bologna!
Glad you're recovering Eric and and have a new fun toy. I was worried that you were down with Covid last week, since no Friday video. It got me for the first time 3 weeks ago, too.
The fever and cough were the worst parts for me - so hard to get rest! Now it's just a mid-level cold :-)
Sweet rig! Need to hear Black Hole Sun through through that mug.
"Everything is always a little bit broken, and that’s OK." - Stoic mate. Stoic.
Man that tone really reminds me of Toad the Wet Sprocket. Good stuff!!
Haugen with the Big Star!! Nice!!!
Excellent video Eric thanks I bet some Trower would sound great coming out of that spinner!
That sounds really cool and really fun.
Thanks, Eric.

LOVE that you hit one of my favorite Todd songs! Robin Trower!
Sweet love the Stephen Wolf riff’s definitely a Arc Angels “See what tomorrow brings “ Vibe ! 🎉

Yeah it definitely doesn't spin straight - I gotta pop the foam off to see if there's any weights on it. Someone else said they may have fallen off.
Really nice demo, Eric, thanks!

Where are you located? wanna sell it?
@@ORDER4STU I sold my first one and missed it so much. I got a second one. I would only give it up if I got an RA-200!
Glorious wet/dry. Very cool set up. Sorry you've been unwell and I hope you are on the mend. Peace and love,. man.
Thanks Peter!
It's not too bad now, just a medium-level cold that won't leave!

Turned out all it needed was a drop of hammond oil on the spindle!
Aaaah! You got me at "it would be stupid not play some Pink Floyd on that setup"! 💗 Love the ending of the video! 🎸
I like the sound of leslie cab alone
With all the cool lessons you have shared it was so great to see you enjoying your self with the new cabinet it put a smile on my face thanks for sharing and also for playing some pink floyd on it that was amazing 😃🙏
Awesome sound. Clvid hit me hard when I got it. Hope it treats you better.
Thanks man! The first few days were the worst - now it's just a medium cold that won't leave!
Sounds groovy, man. Feel better. I had the bug last week. Ps I think the Dusky sounds like a keeper.
Ugh! The fever and cough were the worst for me. Once those passed, now it's just a mid-level cold.
I hear big star, you get a like!
wow
Sounds great! I use the Vibe Machine pedal in mono and it sounds great, but this would be a blast to have setup in my practice area.
That's a classic sound - and a great demo. I love a bit of rotary speaker, especially in a stereo or wet-dry set-up. If I could offer a cheap alternative, the TC Electronic Vibraclone pedal is a decent emulation, including the original's lack of top-end!

Yeah that's what my buddy said - the weights may have fallen off! I'll have to open it up and see.
Sounds sick.
“Let’s turn the speed up on this thing. There we go!” On high Speed it sounds like a box fan running in the background 😂

Post this setup to Tonex lol. I'd love to hear a capture of this.
I hate knowing how good this sounds because now I gotta get my paws on one!

Lovely, I've always wondered how they compare to full-size leslie cabinets.

Late sixties through the seventies - they're out there!
So cool, congratulations on that acquisition. Matthew Scott got one awhile back and I think his was in worse shape.

Hey Eric, what are your best tips for learning songs or solos by ear?
Set the bar low!
Start real simple with classic rock tunes by CCR. Find the chord progression first, and then that'll help sort out some of the licks!
ain't no one going to turn me round..
I strongly suspect you might have been enjoying yourself with that set up.
