Getting back into cycling after a 15 year hiatus. Last 100 mile ride was at age 40. I'm encouraged by your video to try again at age 55. Thank you for the encouragement Katie!

yes..I finally subscribed..watched your tips on cycling 100miles..I've only done that 'accidentally' while cycle touring with panniers and tent, which is my thing....once I met a guy in Greece in 1974 on a motorbike and we were both heading to Turkey so we said let's meet at the border..it was a beautiful long day, rolling road, lovely late afternoon, evening, again I didn't realise that it was over 100miles... I used to take my son on the back of my bike, he's 41 now and tho he lives in Northern Ireland we like to meet up and cycle.. we used to live in Manchester and liked to go up Pott Shrigley, or up to Cat and Fiddle and down into Buxton and back via Whaley Bridge..thing is I want to deliberately go out and cycle 100 miles while I think I can cos I'm 68 now..ps i'd love your ebook, hint hint..

Thank you for making my introduction into the crazily addictive world of cycling so much easier. I’ve managed to avoid most of the initial pitfalls due to your advice, but am just enjoying getting out there on my bike. Since March I have gone from borrowing a bike and hitting the roads for the first time since I was a teenager, to getting my first 100km under my belt. Now eyeing up an Endurance bike purchase :)

Love how you are all about the true experience. No personal agenda. Just the sheer love of cycling. I have learned a lot of the years from watching your videos and when I find myself pushing watts to try to go faster I think of you and I remember it is about the experience. No rush! Also, you are genuine about letting others know it's about what works for each of us. If it's mountain bike shoes, that's fine...just genuine you are. Totally need to watch you kit essencials videos again to take nota and get the chain thingies...def. leaning a lot from you. Well done and thanks for having the platform to share with others.

Great advice-I’d emphasize that this is likely the first time where they will need to force hydration to stay up with demand, since at least for me, on longer rides thirst is a lagging indicator. Brilliant series Katie.

Another good one Katie. For the long distance stuff I also look at the wind charts-getting up early is usually worth it as the wind picks up as the sun rises. A wee bit of free energy. I'd also go caffeine free for a week before-during the century a coffee will have a greater effect. I'd also make my bike fast-get that chain slippery fast. Lots of wee hacks out there.

Great tips. I second going easier when starting a long ride. I feel if I'm pushing too hard or I can feel it, I just drop a gear until it just flows. Works for me. I take a drink every 5 miles/8km if not before and snack every 20-25km. So far it's stopped the dreaded bonk on longer rides.
    Keep up the awesome videos

I would first like to agree with everyone who commented on how visually appealing your videos have become, they have a lovely look about them.
As for century rides, I’ve also done a lot of them over the years with audax rides being amongst the most enjoyable. But I have to say I’m another endorsing the charity ride for your first century ride. Have a look at British Heart Foundation when everything returns to normal they have some great rides, well supported and the upbeat, happiness of the event is good for 25 miles on its own!

I rode my first century with a club, also I had a good friend coming with me who was a more advance cyclist and had done it many times before. He became sort of my pacer when i was struggling and if not he would tail me. we did start slower than everybody else and at the end we just caught up. Those fast early novice starters dropped out and they wound up following sitting in the bus. You are completely right, is about time spent cycling, knowing your long term pace, making sure u eat plenty of fruit. If you can spend 5,6,7 hours on the bike cycling you can surely do it. It was fun untli the last 5 miles...those I dont remember lol

Doing my second 100 in a couple of weeks so good to be reminded of some helpful tips. One I certainly learned about last time was my neck and shoulders got really sore after 80 miles.
So taking some ibuprofen and some exercises going along like shrugs and turning of my neck from side to side on occasions to alleviate discomfort.
Making sure as well to take advantage of drafting even if there’s just two of you the energy saved at the end you’ll be thankful for.
    Love the channel 🙂👍

    • @KatieKookaburra
      @KatieKookaburra  3 года назад

Look into taking ibuprofen while exercising, it can cause swelling and not great for your heart. Ideally try not to use - but if you need pain relief try paracetamol if that works for you. I’m not a medical profession of course so do what works for you but please have a look into this.

I'm doing a Cycle for Dementia throughout this month, raising money for Alzheimer's Society. Originally aimed for 100 miles but have now upped it to 200. I know it won't seem a lot to many people but it's a big challenge for me and my bike. Loving it though and am now up to 120 miles :-)

Once my bike arrives, I will be trying ti get fit. My aim for this year is to do a 100km ride (I did a 100km ride on a fully loaded touring bike twenty years ago, so I think I should be able to do it). Next year, I will be aiming to get fitter still and try to do a 200km Audax and maybe more....... maybe.

I started cycling again almost 2 months ago. I used to ride to work and on weekends on a regular basis but that was 7 years ago. I now do about 125km a week and have been riding some of my old routes along the way. Some of which include some climbs as well. Earlier this week I attempted a short but steep climb I had tried a few times earlier with great difficulty. I was determined to get up the climb without stopping. I noticed another rider up ahead by about 200m and thought ,If he can do it so can I! But he stopped and walked his bike instead. So I thought, I'll show him how it's done. We got to the top at the same time and he yelled, You're making me look bad! Best compliment ever.

If I could offer a couple suggestions to anyone looking to ride their first 100 (km/mi):
    1. Related to Katie's advice on routes: when you're training or working up the endurance, look for shorter route segments that you could link together. Ride the shorter segments individually, then as your endurance improve, start stringing some segments together.
    2. While you start finding those short segments, also note down/remember/etc. any places to go to the restroom (loo? 😜), as well as where to get food/fluids. Nothing is worse than having nowhere to "take a nature break" or running out of nutrition. Don't ask how I know this ... 😉😂

I’ve just done my first 100kms two days ago that actually turned into 120kms coz I ended up getting lost and going in the opposite direction to where I wanted to go, then I got back on track heading towards my destination but didn’t really drink enough and I felt knackered when I got there and felt like taking the train home but I grit my teeth and got on with it only to encounter a incredibly strong head wind (probably not that strong at all!) for the last 40 km/s of my ride. I was totally done by the time I got home and thought about chucking my bike in to the neighbours skip but managed to stop myself, took a second and realized I actually enjoyed myself and I’ll be back out riding in a couple of days once I can sit down again. 😜

I did 10 century rides and with all preparation it is the same -
Dont try out new staff - no new BIB, socks, shoes, food, drinks.
Very important use your most comfy short /BIB and don´t forget to use the anti chafing creme. Nothing worse than have severe pain and still a lot to go.
Don´t remove your pubic hair the day before the ride.
Have a good breakfast but avoid heavy stuff and don´t overeat.
Plan according to the wind, at least have tail wind on the last part.
If you plan a one way ride -- start out there and have the finish at home - Did that with one route , tried both and cycling home gives you some extra push.
Even if your friends are faster, do your own speed. Of course use it to get faster but don´t over do it.
Keep the breaks in the beginning to a minimum, try to get the first large part in one go, so that you can use the freshness first.
For the first 100 Century , have some opt out possibilities in mind. Maybe a train station after 60km or 80km, , you could skip an extra loop/hill, so that you know you could cut it short if necessary, that reduces the pressure.

Ditto on the dates, eating while riding, and having a friend with you. Also, good idea to have someone on standby in case something catastrophic happens.
Having sanitary wipes is necessary, because you don't know the condition on the bathrooms you'll be at. Also, pack an extra pair of shorts if you get rained on. Jacket doesn't always keep your bottom dry. (more important if you're doing multiple centuries over a few days. Also, make sure to pack tubes and tires. You don't know how far the next bike shop is (and plot the bike shops on the route)
also, pack a small camera. You'll wanna capture some of the brilliant sights.

I've done lots of running, and did some (half)marathons. Haven't done the 100k on my bike yet, but it's definitely a goal of mine. I've made it up to 85km. Hope to do the 100 soon.

Hi Katie.. I’ve been cycling for years and trying to drop 30 pounds ( or more) with no success despite me cycling 100-125 km/week, after watching 1000,s of cycling videos I see a trend that most lean cyclists are vegan or at least vegetarian, so today I’ve decided to do my first full day with a vegan low fat diet, I just wanted to let you know that your one of my influences because of your weight loss story/journey. Thank you for your inspiration through all your videos. Wish me luck! ( or should I say willpower, lol) 🏔🚴🏻‍♂️💨👍

Firstly... there were plenty of thin cyclist... and still are, that are not vegan or vegitarian. Skinnest guy I know pretty much only eats meat and potatoes in one form or another. ( Not saying that is healthy btw) Vegan or veggie is a wider life choice. Potatoes , rice , sugars have massive calorific content so you still have to be aware of this. Find foods with low GI. Stuff that slowly releases it's fuel overvtime. This stops yoyoing of sugar surges and stops you from being hungry again. For a 100km ride... eat oats, with fruit, bananas ,berries honey etc... a good amount of it. Take a banana, a bottle of water and a bottle of sugar/ glucose drink. Typically 4 to 4.5 hrs. Just plod away, its not a race. 100miles is slightly different. Factor in a stop or take additional food on the bike... you have to fuel it as a 6 or 8 hour effort cannot be pre-loaded. Whenever you ride hard or for distance, always carb load within an hour afterwards. You need fast carbs at this point to help your body recover. Sugary fruits are great.Sugary fruit drinks are fine. Nb. Watch calories, the stuff on the rides should be burnt on the rides... 400 to 800 cals per hour. The stuff after helps with recovery but are part of your cals intake for the day! You only lose weight by expending more calories than you eat, to do it painlessly... eat lots of low calorific veggies... it keeps you full without adding unecessary calories... carrots not potatoes. (sweet potatoes and yams are excellent though)
